It was a long week for Ron. Work wasn’t going so well and he needed a drink or two to unwind. He knew of the right spot with good food, drinks and music. When he got there, he got a table for two that was situated in a corner. He placed his order and waited.
In the club’s washrooms, Pauline was busy doing her make-up. She had gotten there earlier than usual. Her job was to sell vapes to the club’s revellers. Looking beautiful was a large part of the game. She took her time to dress up and put on make-up before going to look for customers.
After doing an hour and a half in heels around the club, Pauline decided to take a short break. She’d hardly sold any of the vapes. She saw Ron at the table with an empty seat and asked if she could sit there. She asked for a bottle of water.
“Water at 11 p.m.? Did your night start early?” Ron asked Pauline.
“More like, I have a long night ahead,” said Pauline.
“Waiting for someone?” Ron asked her.
“No, I’m not,” said Pauline.
“Care to join me?” Ron asked.
“I would like to but duty calls,” said Pauline, showing him the vapes. “Maybe I could interest you in getting one?”
“Interesting. How many do you need to sell before you’re free to mingle?” Ron asked her.
“I have five left,” said Pauline.
“If I bought them all, would you join me for a drink?” He asked her.
“As long as you know you know that’s all you paid for,” Pauline said with a straight face.
“I’m a gentleman. I don’t pay for those services,” said Ron with a smile.
“I just needed to make that clear,” Pauline replied.
“Does that happen a lot?” Ron asked.
“It’s a club with drunken people. Even without selling these vapes, half the time men think buying drinks automatically opens that door,” said Pauline.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a man so maybe I might want something more but I just want to talk to a stranger tonight,” said Ron.
“That’s not the worst proposal I have gotten,” said Pauline. They both laughed and as soon as Ron bought her remaining stock of vapes, she asked for something stronger than water.
They had a night filled with laughter and dancing. Pauline was easy to talk to and Ron enjoyed the break from his life. Pauline found Ron interesting and honest. Dealing with drunken men hitting on her a few days each week was exhausting sometimes. They exchanged numbers at the end of the night and parted ways.
The following day Ron asked Pauline if she would still be at the club. Pauline informed him that she would be at a different club. Ron showed up with his friends and asked them to buy vapes from her. After that, she spent time with them. Ron was very protective of her and he made it clear that he was with her.
That was the beginning of their romantic interaction. Everything was working out well in the beginning. However, a few weeks later Ron started acting strange. He would show up at Pauline’s work and cause drama when other men tried talking to her. It started to affect her sales. She started lying about the club she would be selling the vapes so that he wouldn’t show up.
“Why are you lying to me?” Ron asked her.
“You keep acting jealous and it’s interfering with my sales,” said Pauline.
“Be honest, you enjoy the attention from these men,” said Ron.
“I have to make a living,” said Pauline.
“Quit the job and I’ll take care of you,” said Ron.
“I want to earn my living,” said Pauline.
“How much do you even make from this? I can triple that and give it to you as an allowance,” Ron told her.
“What happens if we break up? I haven’t disrespected you and you knew what I did for a living. Why is it a problem now?” Pauline asked him.
He explained that he wasn’t comfortable with her being in the presence of so many drunken men every week. It also slipped that his friends questioned her character for working at the place. She asked him to help her set up a business instead but he refused and was adamant about her not working. They couldn’t agree on the matter so they ended the relationship.
