The Singlehood Series: I Decided To Get Out Of My Dating Comfort Zone And Ended Up Meeting A Man Who Was A Walking Red Flag

I’m not a nosey person but I got curious and went through his drawers.

At times, it’s better to stick to what you know. As they say, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. However, one of my goals this year was to be more adventurous in my dating life. I tend to only date a certain type and to be honest, it has become boring and monotonous. Every relationship feels the same. So, I decided to try something new but I wasn’t prepared for the walking red flag that I ended up with.

Since most guys I date are the 9-5 types, I went for the business type this time. I had heard so many good things about them, especially about their escapades, and I wanted to be part of that experience. Hellen, a good friend of mine, introduced me to her friend who owned a car dealership and we hit it off.

It must have been the environment that we were in because when I look back, I wonder how we even had a conversation.

“Hi, this is Maya. She’s my very good friend and this is Noel.”

“I’m her rich friend.” He added which made us all burst out laughing.

“I knew I shouldn’t have asked you to come. You talk too much.” Hellen said, still laughing.

“If I didn’t talk too much you wouldn’t love me the way you do.”

“That’s true but please don’t scare my friend. She’s just met you. Make sure you make a good impression on her.”

“I already like him. You know I like guys who have a good sense of humour.”

“Perfect. Then my work here is done.”

Little did I know his flirty and charming demeanour was his first red flag. After our introduction, Noel didn’t leave my side the whole night.

We talked about everything from our childhood to our future plans. He really made me feel like we wanted the same thing and finally, I saw a future where I settled down and raised a family.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Noel and it’s not even in my nature to fixate on a man. However, I felt things in that one night that I hadn’t felt in my whole life. I was excited to know him more and build a life with him yet we had only met once.

Noel ensured that he kept in touch with me every day even if it was to simply wish me a good day.

“How are you doing?” He asked over the phone.

“I’m good. I just got to work.”

“Good to hear. Hope you have a good day. Make sure you eat and take a break if you feel overwhelmed.”

From then, he would disappear the whole day. I thought that he was giving me space but that was his second red flag.

Our relationship moved so fast and within a month, I was sleeping over at his place for days. I started to notice a few odd things but I brushed them off.

For starters, Noel would sleep out on several occasions. He claimed that he had to travel to authorize his cargo but it happened too frequently yet he didn’t have any new cars in his yard.

“Which cargo do you go to authorize yet I don’t see any new cars coming in?” I asked.

“Oh, don’t worry your pretty head with such things. I have many businesses, sweetheart.”

I didn’t see any issue so I didn’t pester him about it. A few weeks later, Noel did something that should have made me realize that he was a walking red flag.

While I was visiting him, he excused himself to attend a friend’s baby shower. I stayed home since I didn’t know them. Later in the day, I took a shower and decided to wear something more comfortable instead of the jeans I had carried. So I went to his wardrobe to look for a T-shirt and boxers.

It was the first time I had gone through his stuff and let me tell you, I wish I never did. I opened the first drawer which had his neatly folded boxers. I took one, and then I got curious and opened the second drawer. There was nothing out of the usual.

The last one was the one that made my knees weak. When I opened it, I was met by a bright pink thong. After looking closely, I realized the whole drawer was filled with thongs and bras.

“Oh my God, what is this?” I said to myself as I stared at the drawer.

I started going through the things and I could see they belonged to different people. The bras were all sizes. It was like he was collecting souvenirs of girls he had slept with.

It wasn’t unusual. However, I didn’t expect it from Noel. He presented himself as a gentleman yet he turned out to be a womanizer.

After the shock wore off, I wore my clothes and went to the living room. I called Hellen to explain what I had found and she came over to Noel’s place immediately.

The first thing she did when she came was go to the bedroom and look at the drawer.

“How can he be so deceitful?” She asked.

“I don’t know, babe. I’m so confused. This is a major red flag.”

“Hold on. Don’t overreact. He probably has an explanation for this.”

Noel arrived in the dead of the night, visibly drunk. He didn’t even notice Hellen was there for over a minute.

“Ah, Hellen. What are you doing here?”

“We have something to ask you.”

“Okay.”

“Why do you have a drawer full of thongs and bras?”

“Oh, those? I used to sell them.”

“Stop lying, Noel. I’ve known you for years and you’ve never sold any bras or panties.”

“Fine, they belong to girls I’ve slept with.”

I was quiet the whole time but I could feel my face becoming hot.

“So this is who you are yet you made me think you’re a gentleman?” I finally said.

“I am a gentleman.”

“You’re not.” Hellen barked then grabbed my hand. “Let’s go. He’s not worth more of your time.”

Hellen seemed more hurt than I was about how the relationship turned out. I simply took it as a lesson and went back to the men I was used to dating. They may be boring but they aren’t a walking red flag.
