Three friends, Olivia, Makena and Crystal, shared an apartment. It was 2 a.m. Crystal had just gotten home after her Valentine’s Day dinner with her boyfriend. She was smiling and glowing, unlike her friends watching their comfort show. They were sharing cake and a bottle of gin.
“What’s with the long faces?” Crystal asked Makena and Olivia.
“We should be asking, what’s with the grin?” Olivia responded.
“I had a fantastic dinner with my boyfriend,” said Crystal, smiling and holding a pillow.
“Show off!” Makena responded.
“What am I missing? Didn’t you both have Valentine’s plans today? Why are you in a funk?” Crystal asked her friends.
Olivia went first. She reached out for something from her handbag. It was a phone. She showed Crystal the phone.
“Oh, you have a new phone finally,” Crystal said.
“Tame your excitement or you’ll be in the dog house like my boyfriend,” Olivia told Crystal.
“So he got you a phone? Why are you angry?” Crystal asked her.
“Look at the brand. This isn’t an upgrade,” said Olivia.
“Okay, I agree it’s not what you wanted. Had you told him the kind of phone you want?” Crystal asked Olivia.
“Babes, if he wanted to, he could have! Men out here get it right all the time without asking their women. He should see what other men are getting for their girlfriends,” Olivia told Crystal.
“Oh, wow!” Crystal exclaimed. They all laughed.
Crystal turned to Makena, “Ehe. So, what did your man do?”
“He didn’t mention Valentine’s plans the whole week. I decided I wasn’t going to ask about it since I was already stressed up about work. You know how my boss has a target on my back, so I wasn’t going to stress out over another issue. In my mind, we weren’t going to do anything for the day and even if we were, it would probably be a simple meal,” Makena narrated.
“Were you okay with that?” Olivia asked Makena.
“Honestly, I think so. I’m not too big on Valentine’s,” Makena responded.
“You are a bigger woman than I am,” Olivia remarked.
Olivia’s remark had them in laughter. They got distracted and got chatting about other things for a few minutes. Crystal dug into the cake.
“This is really good!” Where did the cake come from?” Crystal asked.
“Makena’s wonderful boyfriend had it delivered,” Olivia responded.
“Thank you spokesperson,” Makena said sarcastically.
“So he was silent about Valentine’s because he wanted to surprise you?” Crystal asked Makena.
“Oh, he absolutely surprised me. Besides the ‘loud’ gifts, I discovered he doesn’t know that I don’t like grand gestures and public displays of affection,” Makena said.
Makena told Crystal how her boyfriend sent several bouquets of flowers, a giant teddy bear, and a cake to her office. It caused so much commotion in their office. Her workmates kept going to her cubicle to chat about her romantic life. The flowers couldn’t fit in her work cubicle, so she had to use more office space to keep them.
Makena’s boss, who disliked her, found another reason to scold her. The gift was creating an unproductive work environment. She saw her boss sneer at her. Makena thought she was going to get fired. Her boyfriend, on the other hand, thought he had scored points with her. He sounded excited when he called her to ensure she had received the gifts.
Makena’s cake was large enough to feed her colleagues, and she still had some leftovers to take home. She couldn’t wait for the evening to get the flowers out of the office. Her boyfriend wasn’t available to pick her up, although they were to meet up later in the evening. She called a taxi to take her home. As she got the flowers into the cab, she imagined how cumbersome taking care of them would be and decided to give them away. She gave some of her colleagues most of the bouquets save for one.
Later, when she met her boyfriend, he couldn’t understand why she was angry at him. He claimed she was unappreciative of his efforts to make her feel special. They had an awkward dinner, and the poor service at the restaurant didn’t help the situation. She couldn’t wait to get home.
“So what did your perfect boyfriend get you that has you smiling?” Makena asked Crystal.
“Exactly what I wanted, perfume,” Crystal replied.
“You’re lucky he knows you well,” Olivia said.
“It’s not luck. Okay, yes, he knows me but we had talked about our gifts. I wanted perfume so he asked me to join him at a perfume store a while back and we tested out some of the ones I wanted on my skin to know how they work out on me and that’s how he knew what to get me. I also knew what he wanted,” Crystal explained.
“Oh, that’s what you guys were up to when you came back smelling all kinds of perfumes?” Makena asked.
“Yes, it was. However, I didn’t know which one he would buy specifically but he was choosing from my options,” Crystal told them.
“I know you want to tell me, I should have told my boyfriend the type of phone I wanted,” said Olivia.
“Yes, Olie, I mean the man isn’t a mind reader,” Crystal replied.
Olivia pouted, although she knew Crystal had made a valid point.
“Yes, Doctor Love, what advice do you have for me?” Makena asked Olivia.
“I understand why you are angry given your situation at the office. It was inconsiderate of him to have the gifts delivered at your workplace. I hope he realizes that. Does he know you don’t like grand gestures?” Crystal asked Makena.
“I thought he picked up on it because he has done a few other things and I told him I don’t like the attention. I think he assumed I was just being shy,” Makena replied.
“Talk to him and let him know, and if he doesn’t get it, then you did your part,” Crystal told Makena.
They ate some more cake and toast to their friendship and relationships.
