The wedding night is built up to be this night of love, romance, and copious lovemaking. One survey however found that that isn’t the case. Love and romance may be present but lovemaking? Not so much. The survey found that more than half (52%) of just-married couples don’t get busy with it on the night of their nuptials. Another survey’s results placed it at 65% of couples opted out. It’s more normal than we realize. Here are some common reasons people opt out of wedding night sex.
Too tired
If you guessed exhaustion, go to the front of the class. Weddings can be exhausting plus couples are often under extreme pressure to have the perfect day. They are often too mentally and physically drained for it and it makes more sense to postpone it. The bride was too tired in 16% of the cases and the groom was too tired in about 4% of the cases.
Too drunk
Alcohol is one of the main reasons why newlyweds opt-out. Intoxication is not a recipe for meaningful intimacy and so many couples consciously decide against it. This appears to be the main reason for 13% of the couples polled.
Spend time with friends and family
Weddings bring people together in ways few events manage to do. For this reason, newlyweds choose to spend the evening celebrating and partying with their friends and families instead of running off to have sex. This was the case for about 7% of the couples.
Needed to leave for the honeymoon
Another common reason couples postpone wedding night sex is travelling for their honeymoon. For newlyweds who leave their reception or evening party and head straight for the airport, wedding night sex is often off the table. This was the case for about 9% of the couples.
Had a fight before the reception ended
Weddings are often high-pressure events, especially for the couple. For this reason, people are easily irritated and disagreements happen easily. This was the case for about 9% of the couples. For most of them, it’s rarely something serious and the newlyweds make up and consummate the marriage. Just about 1% of couples get into disagreements serious enough to end the marriage and ensure the union never gets consummated. The good news is the odds are in your favour.
What do people do instead?
Many couples choose to have morning sex. After getting some much-needed rest, many newlyweds are often rearing to go. About 2.9% of people wait two days before having sex.
The good news is most of the reasons couples opted out of wedding night sex were unrelated to intimacy or lack thereof. Choosing to postpone it or not is not an indicator of the health of your relationship. Relax. Society puts too much pressure on wedding days and wedding nights for no good reason. Sex under pressure is rarely good. If you’re going to have se, it should be great or what’s the point? So chill out, and sleep, you have the rest of your life to have sex.
