The Singlehood Series: He Claimed She Was Too Independent

Having failed at relationships before, Cecilia thought she needed to change the type of men she dated only for the new catch to think she was too independent.

Cecilia was done dating broke and unambitious men. She worked hard to get everything she wanted in life, but unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to guarantee success in the love department. Cecilia had never discriminated against a potential suitor because of his financial status. She believed that with hard work and a bit of luck, anyone’s fortunes could change for the better. However, after several failed relationships related to her financial success, she decided to try something different.

Zach ticked the boxes. He had a stable job, sounded family oriented, was a believer, and hadn’t borrowed any money yet. She had a good feeling about this one. She raved about him to her friends. He seemed to have his act together and had that masculine energy. It was a surprise when Cecilia texted her girlfriends, asking for their input.

“Guys, there may be a little trouble in paradise,” Cecilia wrote.

“Did he ask for a loan already?” One friend asked.

“Lol. Far from that,” Cecilia responded.

“So what did he do?” The other friend asked.

“He’s angry at me because I didn’t ask him for help to get some things fixed in the house,” Cecilia replied.

“Okay, that’s a new kind of problem to have,” one friend joked.

“What did you get fixed?” the other friend asked.

“My shower head had a problem so I vented to him in a casual conversation. I then proceeded to tell him that I was waiting for the caretaker to send me an electrician’s number so that I can have it fixed. He didn’t say much and then later told me that that’s the kind of thing that he should solve for me. I argued that it was fine since I already called a professional to handle it and he got mad,” Cecilia responded.

“Oh, you got yourself a man who’s handy. That’s a good thing,” one friend said.

“I get that bit but he lives on the other side of town so it’s just easier to have someone fix it,” Cecilia argued.

“Girl, I get your point but you know what they say about men and wanting to be needed,” her other friend said.

At the end of the conversation, she decided to be more mindful of Zach’s needs. She expressed her thoughts to him, and that was fixed. They had exciting moments together like any couple still in their honeymoon phase. The next time they argued, Zach was angry because Cecilia was late for a date because she had gone to do her hair and nails.

“I’m sorry, it took longer than expected,” Cecilia told Zach.

“You should have let me know beforehand,” Zach responded.

“Okay, I will. It was worth the wait though?” Cecilia asked, trying to change the mood.

“Yes, it was. How much was the bill?” Zach asked.

“Why?” Cecilia asked.

“So that I can refund you,” he said as he opened his Mpesa app.

“Zach, I don’t need you to refund me. I can take care of my grooming bills.”

“You have let me pay for your hair before, why are you reacting this way?” Zach asked.

“Yes, I have and I appreciate it. I just don’t think it should be an item that you treat as a monthly bill or something that you should refund me for,” Cecilia responded.

“I want to take care of my woman, next time tell me before the appointment,” said Zach with finality.

Cecilia didn’t push it for the sake of peace, but she felt like she’d been told to report to him. As someone who worked to pay for her things, it felt off though she also understood where Zach was coming from.

A few weeks later, she had an incident with her car. A driver hit her car from behind, and although it wasn’t too serious, her car needed minor repairs. Resolving the issue took time, making her late and ruining her day. In the evening, she vented to Zach nonstop about her day and then realized that he was silent.

“Babe, are you there?”

“Yes, I am. I’m wondering why I’m learning about this at the end of the day,” Zach responded.

“I called the relevant people at the moment and they resolved it but I’m telling you now because I wanted to tell you about my day,” Cecilia responded.

“You tell me about your problems after you’ve resolved them. What exactly is my role in your life?” Zach asked her.

“I was already late so I needed to resolve it quickly. I honestly think I needed to tell you about the incident at that time,” Cecilia defended herself.

“This is not about today only, I am not another one of your girlfriends. I want to be able to handle the stuff a man can handle in your life.”

“Zach, I have been doing these things for myself. Should I pretend I don’t know how to handle them?”

“You’re missing the point, Cecilia, you’re too independent. I don’t feel needed because you resolve everything by yourself,” Zach responded.

“I don’t understand what you want me to do. I’m not trying to offend you, it just happens for the past incidents I have known what to do to solve the problem,” said Cecilia.

They hung on to the relationship for a few more weeks but couldn’t find a compromise.
