Joe had been avoiding Kathleen for a few days because he didn’t want to have a difficult conversation. She had found incriminating messages on his phone. Joe knew they had screwed up big time, and Kathleen looked like she would end the relationship. He wasn’t ready to have that conversation just yet, so he feigned busyness. He, however, promised to meet her up the following day after attending a work party with his sister.
The phone call came in at around 4 a.m. It was Joe’s best friend, James.
“Hi, Kathleen.”
“Hi James, is anything the matter?”
“I’m sorry to call at this time but something happened to Joe,” James said to Kathleen.
After the phone call, she quickly rushed to the hospital where Joe and his sister had been rushed after an accident. Kathleen found his family wailing, and his best friend looked like a truck hit him. She feared the worst had happened. She started crying too as she walked towards James.
“Where’s he?” Kathleen asked him.
“He’s in surgery but his sister didn’t make it,” James responded.
She suddenly felt dizzy. Joe’s situation seemed promising, but the sister’s death would be a significant blow to him. She was the only person Joe listened to, and they were pretty close. As expected, the following months were hard for all of them. Joe was constantly irritable, and it also hindered his recovery speed. He broke his leg and required physical therapy.
James and Kathleen took turns at his house looking after him. Initially, he was ridden with guilt that he survived. Later on, as his leg got better, he started drinking heavily. Joe started picking fights with people he could clearly not win against. He would be in unexplained accidents and always had bruises somewhere.
Kathleen convinced him to seek help to get through his grief, but he told her he was a man and would get over it. She stayed through the drinking. Sometimes he would get vulnerable and talk about his feelings. Other times being there for him meant giving him first aid after his recurring fights and minor accidents.
After weeks of darkness, Joe seemed to be getting better. The whole ordeal seemed to have brought them closer. He returned to his social life as he got back on his feet. Initially, he hated that people wanted to ask him how he was doing, but they eventually stopped. There was a sense of normalcy that returned, although every so often, something happened to remind him that he lost his sister. Unfortunately, part of normalcy returning also meant his partying and socialization were also back.
It was during this period that Kathleen discovered she was pregnant. It was a joyous moment for Kathleen because she had wanted to be a mother for a while, but Joe hadn’t been ready. She didn’t get pregnant intentionally, but it was a welcome surprise. Joe seemed happy too.
A week after they discovered Kathleen was pregnant, they fought. It was about his partying, and he argued that she was being controlling. He stormed out and left her in his house. At around 11 p.m., Kathleen tried calling him, but he ignored the call. She tried calling him thrice, but he didn’t pick up. She called her best friend.
He got home in the morning and discovered that she wasn’t home. He called her, but she didn’t pick up. At first, he brushed it off as a tantrum after he ignored her calls and headed to the bedroom. He found bloody clothes soaked in the bathroom. It also looked like someone was looking for clothes, and the closet was disorganized, something that Kathleen wasn’t. He panicked and called her again.
“Hello, stop calling Joe,” Kathleen’s best friend whispered.
“Where’s Kathleen?” Joe asked her ignoring her statement.
“Now you care about what happens to her?” The friend asked angrily.
“Please tell me what happened,” Joe pleaded.
“She lost the child and she’s devastated.”
“Shit! Shit!” Joe cursed.
“That’s about right. Now get back to your important partying and let her rest!” The best friend hung up.
It took many phone calls to find out which hospital she was in, but he finally did. He went to see Kathleen but met with an angry group of people, including her best friend and sister, who almost blocked him from seeing her. Kathleen asked them to give them some privacy. She clarified that she wasn’t returning to his place after release. They were at that point of no return. Nothing he did could make it right.
