Dating in this economy is becoming an extreme sport. It’s hard to find someone you’re compatible with because everyone is so worried about money. If you get a date, every topic turns to the economy. To be honest, I’m tired of hearing people complain about how broke they are. This has always been a dealbreaker for me since it’s not fun to talk about financial matters on the first date. So, I decided to put my foot down if anyone started to talk about money on the next date I went to.
After another failed date, I signed up with an online dating site hoping to find something different from the guys I had been going out with. Sure enough, there were countless men on the dating site who seemed to have their life in order and wouldn’t be worried about financial matters. By the time I was done swiping, I had more than 20 matches and a couple of messages. I replied to the one that I liked most and we kicked things off.
“Today must be my lucky day.” He started.
“Why?” I asked.
“I just matched with the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.”
It was obvious that he was trying to win me over and it was working. It didn’t take long for me to give him my number since I didn’t want to be on the dating site anymore. Later that evening, Kian called me and we talked for hours. His voice was so good that I couldn’t get him out of my mind for the rest of the night. I kept smiling to myself every time he crossed my mind. I hadn’t felt excited to meet someone in a while.
So far, everything was going well and he hadn’t brought up financial issues so I knew I would enjoy a date with him.
“What’s your perfect date?” He asked when we talked the following day.
“An outdoor dinner in the wild,” I answered.
“I’ll take you one of these days.”
“I look forward to it.”
“Can we have a date tomorrow?”
“Of Course. I was wondering when you’d ask.”
“Really? That’s such a relief. I thought you’d say no.”
“Why would I? We get along so well.”
“Where do you want to go?”
“Sankara,” I answered without hesitating.
He was silent for a minute then said, “That’s a bit pricey for a first date.”
“I was joking,” I answered. “We can go to a cafe.”
“That’s better.”
Even though I was joking, I didn’t expect Kian to reject my proposal. After all, he had presented himself as a person who had his financial affairs in order. I started to doubt just how financially stable he was but I still decided to go through with the date.
We met in person and he looked exactly like his profile picture. He came dressed in a well-tailored suit and smelled like a million dollars. I found myself smiling for no reason again.
“Wow, I’m finally meeting the beauty who has stolen my attention.” He said. “I never thought this day would come.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. I just thought you would stand me up.”
Why would I do that? You’re an amazing guy.”
“Well, after you suggested I take you to Sankara, I got a little scared.”
“I thought you were financially stable, though. Such things shouldn’t scare a rich man like you.”
“I can’t afford to spend money like that in this economy.”
We hadn’t even ordered and he was already talking about his financial situation. However, I gave him the benefit of the doubt since he was cute and we had gotten along so well.
“I hope you won’t order expensive things.”
“We’re at a cafe. What can I order that would be so expensive?”
“I’m just cautious because it seems you’re not having financial issues like the rest of us.”
I tried to steer the conversation in a different direction, but he somehow found a way to make it about money. The man who showed up in a three-piece suit and drove a Mercedes was lecturing me about how to save money.
“Can I ask, what’s your financial background like?”
I didn’t even know how to answer the question. No one had ever asked me about my financial background, especially on a first date.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“I’m a financial advisor at one of the biggest banks in the country and I’m just curious about your relationship with money.”
“Well, I didn’t grow up in a wealthy family but I’ve managed to become financially successful.”
He laughed then said, “That explains a lot. You’re not financially successful. Do you have a house, a car, property, or investments?”
He couldn’t stop talking about his wealth and how he has helped many people change their financial background throughout the date. Since I had dated men who brought up their financial situation, this wasn’t surprising to me anymore. At least, he wasn’t complaining about how broke he was but it was still annoying and boring.
“You don’t seem to be enjoying yourself. Do I intimidate you?” He asked.
“I want to go home.”
“You can go. No one is stopping you. Do you want money for Uber?”
Of course, I didn’t want money for Uber. However, he had wasted my time and I wasn’t about to spend any more money because of him.
“Sure,” I answered and he handed me two thousand shillings.
“Let me know if you need more.” He said, a bit more gently but arrogantly.
I blocked and deleted his number while I was in the Uber. That was the worst date I had ever been on. I was worse since I expected better from Kian. He seemed like a really down-to-earth man and someone who was interested in a real relationship so you can imagine how disappointed I was when he talked about money and put me down.
After that date, I decided to take an indefinite break from dating or at least until the economy got better.
