I was so excited when my longtime crush finally paid attention to me. However, there was one issue I noticed as soon as we started dating. Dan was a penny pincher. He took pride in saving costs in whatever way he could. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to save costs but he always took it too far. I had to protest so he would take me out on a date and even when we went he always gave me a budget.
Date nights were always a nightmare with Dan. Whenever I went above the set budget, he would make me pay for the meal or lecture me about how he was not a rich man. I never had fun when we went out so we stopped going. This, naturally, took a toll on our relationship. There was no romance and I couldn’t remember the last time we had fun as a couple. At times, I wondered why I had a crush on him and agreed to be in a relationship with him.
However, Dan had a way with words. He always convinced me that he was doing the best for us.
“Babe, can you buy me these shoes?” I asked.
“Babe, I’m trying to build a good future for us. We can’t afford to waste money on unnecessary things.” He explained.
“You’ve never bought me a gift.”
“I’ll buy everything you want when we are rich.”
Such promises would keep me going for a few weeks then I’d feel the lack of romance in our relationship, especially when I saw my friends getting spoiled with gifts, trips and date nights. Whenever I confronted him about how stingy he was compared to other guys, he would dismiss me.
“Those guys are fools. After spending that money, those girls will leave them and he’ll be broke.”
“Most of them are in serious relationships.”
“It doesn’t matter. I know how girls are.”
Slowly, I started to understand the root of his stinginess. He was cautious about spending his money, especially on women since he didn’t want to be taken advantage of. I understood where he came from but I had proved to myself for a whole year that I was not with him for money. The least he could do was take me on a nice date.
Luckily, our one-year anniversary was coming up and I pressured him to take me on a date. I also gave him an ultimatum since I was tired of being in an unromantic relationship.
“This is the last straw, Dan. We need to build a strong relationship.” I said.
“Fine. I will take you on the best date you’ve ever been on.”
Dan knew I loved movies. In fact, watching movies was one of my favourite hobbies when I was dating him. I just loved getting lost in a different world for a few hours especially since my life had become so boring. So, he suggested that we should go watch a movie. I was looking forward to going to the movies so I was very happy about the plan.
We picked a movie and a date and I let him do the rest.
“You should wear something nice.” He suggested.
“I don’t have any nice clothes.”
“You have so many clothes. Just dress up. It’s going to be a good date.”
Even though I was sceptical, I followed his instruction and wore a dress I had been saving for a special occasion. I even wore heels to finish the look.
Dan borrowed his friend’s car and drove us to the movie. So far, the night was going great. We even held hands as we walked into the building.
“We’re going to have so much fun tonight.” He said.
We made our way to the ticket counter where he bought two tickets. I thought that he was done so I started to walk away but I was astonished when he asked for snacks. I stood quietly as he asked for a snack after snack then proceeded to pay for everything.
“Wow, Dan. What’s the occasion?” I asked.
“Why?”
“You don’t usually spend this much on dates.”
“Well, I decided to spoil you a bit.”
“Thank you,” I said as we went into the cinema.
When we settled down, Dan kept the snacks on the other side of the seat. I thought that he did it subconsciously so I reached for one of the chocolate bars. He grabbed it out of my hand and placed it back on the side of the seat.
I didn’t think much of it at first. I assumed that he wanted us to eat when the movie started so after the trailers ended, I tried to reach for the snacks. He grabbed it out of my hand again.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“These are mine. I told you I would take you to a movie, not buy you snacks.”
“Are you serious?”
“Very serious.”
“You won’t even finish those snacks.”
“It doesn’t matter. I’ll carry them home.”
You’re the worst person I’ve ever dated.” I said then stormed out of the movie.
Dan didn’t even follow me outside. I took an Uber and went to a friend’s place where I stayed for a couple of days. Dan didn’t call or message me to ask if I was okay for three days. I had to call him so that I could pick up my belongings.
“So, you’re breaking up with me because I didn’t buy you snacks. You’re very petty. This is why we couldn’t work out.”
“You’re the one who is petty. Everybody has told me to break up with you.”
“It’s fine. I’ll pack your things and send an Uber to bring them.”
It was hard to believe that Dan was my crush at one point in my life. I wondered what I saw in him. He was not only stingy but also rude. When we finally broke up, it felt like I was leaving prison. I realized that I never felt any love while in that relationship.
