When I first laid eyes on Amelia I was in awe of her beauty. She was hanging her clothes as she hummed a song. I stared at her for a few seconds admiring every feature about her.

“Did you want to hang your clothes here?” She asked, snapping me out of my very inappropriate thoughts.

“No, I’m sure I’ll find a spot,” I replied quickly.

“Okay,” She replied as she walked away with her empty bucket.

From that one conversation, I knew I had to see her again. Normally I would shy away from engaging with women but for her, I was willing to face my fears. I walked behind her slowly to find out which house she had moved to. Given that we lived in a building with so many houses it was always difficult to know when someone new had moved into the building. She stopped at the house right opposite mine and once she opened the door I was overjoyed.

The following day I woke up intending to ask her out. I knew there was a chance she would decline but I didn’t care. For the first time, I was going after a woman I desired and that was all that mattered. It was a Sunday and my assumption was she would probably head to church so I decided to wait until afternoon.

At 3 pm I heard her opening her door and knew it was time. I took a quick shower and gave myself a small pep talk in front of the mirror before heading out and knocking on her door.

“Hey?” She said as she opened the door.

She was still dressed in what I thought was her church wear. A long red dress that seemed to show all her curves perfectly.

“Hey, I’m Larry,” I said quickly trying to focus on her eyes instead of her body.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Cindy,” She replied with a smile.

“I wanted to welcome you into the building and ask if you would be open to going on a date with me,” I said.

“Thank you and yes, I would,” She replied.

I tried my best to contain my joy until I got back into the house.

“Great, can I have your number then we can agree on a day that works for the both of us?” I said as I took out my phone.

She grabbed my phone, saved her number and handed it back to me.

“I work night shifts so weekdays are a bit tricky for me,” She said.

“Okay, weekend it is,” I said with a smile.

The following week I texted her on a Wednesday and asked if she would be available on Saturday. She texted me back and informed me that she would be available.

My intention was for her to have a good time and so I asked her what her favourite food was, and she replied Italian. That night I searched for good restaurants around and finally settled on Matteo’s Italian restaurant. The food reviews were good, and the environment looked aesthetically pleasing.

Saturday morning, I woke up and decided to text her to confirm the time and we both agreed on 2 pm. When going through the details of the restaurant I forgot to check out the menu. Since I was a sponsor on a budget, I decided to get there early just to access how much I would end up spending.

The menu looked quite fair. So, I took out my phone, sent her a pin and asked her to take an Uber. As I waited for her, I decided to order a mocktail. By 2 pm she had arrived dressed in a short maroon dress. I stood up to hug her and her fragrance also had me hooked. She smelt of warm vanilla mixed with a woody scent. The only thing that I found weird was the bag she was carrying. It seemed packed but I learnt a long time back to never ask women unnecessary questions.

The waiter approached us and handed her a menu as he asked her what she wanted to drink. She glanced at me and then back to the menu which made me assume she was uneasy.

“Feel free,” I said in an attempt to show her that I had everything sorted.

She stated that she wanted white wine and asked for a specific brand I had never heard of. Since I was eager to impress her, I requested him to bring a bottle instead of one glass. In my mind, there was no way our food and drinks would go beyond the limit I had set. I wasn’t much of a drinker so I asked for another mocktail. Our drinks came first and later we ordered food. Thirty minutes later, the food was brought, and Amelia and I engaged as we enjoyed our meal. Time passed by as we got to know more about each other and before we knew it the sun had set. At around 7 pm, Amelia excused herself to go to the washroom as the waiter brought the bill.

I guessed that the amount would be exactly what I had budgeted for the day or slightly more. However, looking at the bill I was beyond shocked. The amount was double what I had and the wine she had ordered was what had raised the amount. This same wine that she had taken only one glass of. The minute Amelia returned I also excused myself to go to the washroom. I know what you are probably thinking but given that I was on a mission to impress her I couldn’t pull such a stunt. Furthermore, she lived across from me so running away was not an option. I got to the washroom, called my brother and explained the situation. Luckily, he understood and told me to give him a few minutes to see what he could do.

To avoid suspicion, I went back to the table and acted naturally. Ten minutes later, I received a Mpesa message and although I was calm, deep down I was screaming like a little girl. I paid for the bill and because I was in a good mood, decided to add a tip for him. I turned to Amelia knowing that since everything was sorted, we could continue talking. Just as I was about to talk her phone rang and she picked it up. I couldn’t tell what the person was saying to her but given how her excited she was it had to be a man. After the call, she finished the remaining wine in her glass and asked if we could leave.

As we walked out, I thought we would end up sharing an Uber back home. Instead, she told me she was going for a sleepover.  I remembered the bag she had carried and put two and two together. Now I’m not the kind of man to expect a woman to spend the night with me after one date. That wasn’t my intention, but the thought of the money I had spent and her going to see another man disturbed me.

Once I got home, she called me and even though I was disappointed I picked up the call. She informed me that she had arrived safely, I replied with an okay and hang up. A few minutes later, she sent me a text informing me of the Uber amount and asked if she should pay then I refund. Although I was the one that asked her out, she didn’t feel even the slightest remorse for me.

Remembering the expensive wine which she packed to go enjoy with the man she was flirting with on call, and now her wanting me to pay her Uber angered me. I blocked her number and spent the evening looking for affordable places to move to so I could cut her off completely.
