Kevin and Renee were considered a normal couple by friends and family. However, once they got married, things went from normal to hectic. The two had dated for two years before deciding to tie the knot. Kevin’s parents were shocked that he had decided to settle down, given the Casanova behaviors he had displayed in his early adulthood. His father tried to tell him that marriage was not easy, so it was essential to evaluate if he was ready for it. Kevin took offense and stormed off, the conversation ended there, and like a good parent, his father never brought it up again.
The two were so excited on their wedding night, and after a few drinks, one thing led to another; weeks later, she was pregnant. Kevin was disappointed because he had planned to wait a year before they could have a child. Nevertheless, he put on a brave face and convinced himself that he would be the best father.
Nine months flew by, and Renee gave birth to a boy. Kevin was so happy at that moment, not knowing that his responsibility had become bigger. He tried his best to be a good parent for the first few days. They would take turns soothing their baby, playing with him, and changing his diaper. However, as the weeks passed, Kevin got tired and somewhat resentful of their life. He started spending more time at work to avoid hearing his son cry. At night he would sleep on the sofa and lie to Renee that he blacked out watching movies.
A month passed, and his routine remained the same, causing an issue in his marriage. Whenever Renee would bring it up, he would use the excuse that work is stressful, so she would let the story go. Eventually, Renee got tired and decided to focus on their child.
A few months later, Kevin was offered a job in Mombasa. He knew his wife would not be up for it but was surprised when she urged him to go. Kevin quickly packed his bags and took a flight days earlier in the name of “settling in,”. Given his recent behaviour, Renee knew he couldn’t wait to leave her and their son. Knowing his marriage was on the rocks, he decided to travel to Nairobi every two weeks to visit. Every time Renee would remain cold and distant.
Kevin knew she wanted him to spend more time with their child so he offered to take turns as they did during the first days. Slowly his wife warmed up to him again, and things returned to normal. At the beginning of his fourth month at his new job, he met Joy, who had just started as an intern. Their bond started as an innocent friendship that turned into a no-strings-attached relationship.
Kevin still loved Renee, but Joy brought out a fun side of him he hadn’t experienced in a long time. However, he knew that to make things work, he would have to be extra careful, so he still travelled to Nairobi and tried his best to bond with his family.
The affair continued for months, and seeing that he had managed to stay safe, Kevin stopped being cautious. During one of the weekends, Renee decided to travel to Mombasa to surprise him since it was his birthday, and she knew they had never spent one apart. Unfortunately, that was the same weekend Kevin had planned to stay indoors, cuddling with Joy.
Renee took the early morning flight to maximize their time together. Upon arriving, she took a cab to his place, and since he was not expecting her, he asked Joy to open the door. At first glance, Renee thought Joy was the cleaning lady since she was dressed in a Dera and a headwrap. However, once she got into his room, it was evident that Joy was more than just a cleaning lady.
“Who is at the door, babe?” Kevin asked as he turned to the side table to check the time.
Joy remained silent, and Renee stood there staring at her husband, trying not to cry. When he realized she wasn’t answering, he turned to face the door and was stunned to see his wife and their son. Before Kevin could speak, she dashed out of his apartment. He struggled to put on some clothes so he could go after her, but by the time he got downstairs, she was gone.
The following week he tried calling and texting, but she ignored him. The weekend that followed, he travelled to Nairobi to sort things out. Renee refused to speak to him and informed him that she would stay with her parents to wrap her head around what had happened.
Kevin knew that if she went home the story would spread and he couldn’t risk the embarrassment. So, to save himself, he went on his knees and begged her to give him another chance, and he would do anything to save their marriage. She informed him that the best thing to do was to give her time which he did.
They didn’t speak to each other for two weeks, which stressed Kevin. The next day he went to work and asked if he could be transferred to the Nairobi office since he had a toddler to take care of. Fortunately, they accepted his request, and two weeks later, he was back in Nairobi with his belongings.
Renee was shocked to see him, but at the same time, she was happy. Kevin informed her that he had cut ties with Joy and, from now on, he would dedicate his time to his family. They went through couple’s therapy and slowly got back in sync. By the time their son clocked one, Kevin had sorted out his feelings and had warmed up to his child.
One random day he walked into his office and bumped into Joy. Like him, she had decided to transfer to Nairobi. Kevin convinced himself that things would be okay if he kept his distance from her. Unfortunately, they were paired up for a project, meaning they had to spend time together. He tried his best to contain himself but gave in to temptation, and slowly they returned to their relationship.
This time Kevin informed her that they would have to be discreet, and she agreed. He also remained on his toes to avoid what had happened before. Being in Nairobi, Kevin knew it would be easier to hide the affair, and it was. All seemed well until he planned a trip to Mombasa to buy a new car. At the same time, Joy had decided to go back home to see her parents, so he offered to go with her. After sorting out their intended errands, they extended their stay.
Kevin was always against Joy posting their photos and videos on social media. However, she occasionally posted for her close friends whenever she was excited. During their second day at the hotel, she had a few drinks and ended up posting as usual. The following day Kevin was woken up by a call.
“Hello?” He answered.
“Bro, have you checked out the family group?” His brother asked in a concerned tone.
“No, why?” Kevin asked.
“I think you need to open your WhatsApp,” His brother replied before hanging up.
Kevin opened his WhatsApp to find that Renee had shared photos of Joy, her phone number, and a voice note. In the voice note, she informed the entire family that he had been having an affair with Joy, and even after she caught him cheating, he continued to see her.
She then added that their marriage was beyond saving, and seeing that he had chosen Joy, he was now free to be with her. As he scrolled down, he saw more photos and videos of him and Joy and suddenly realized that she was the cause of all this. He couldn’t understand who had managed to share those photos and videos with his wife.
“Babe? What’s wrong?” Joy asked as she turned to find him staring at his phone with a disappointed look.
“I asked you not to post our photos and videos together. You’ve ruined my marriage!” He snapped at her.
“What are you talking about?” She asked.
Kevin showed her the messages and the photos his wife had shared on the group.
“I thought I had shared it with my close friends,” She said.
“Thanks to your stupid mistake, I have been embarrassed and will probably end up divorced,” He said.
“I’m not the one that asked you to cheat on your wife, Kevin!” She snapped.
Kevin knew if he continued this back and forth, he would hit her, so he got out of bed and freshened up. Joy tried apologizing once he got out of the bathroom, but Kevin ignored her as he got dressed and packed his clothes.
“You can stay here for the rest of the days, but I don’t want to hear from you again,” He said bluntly before leaving.
He got in his car and drove to Nairobi, hoping to sort out the issue first with Renee and then with his family. Upon arriving at their home, he found the door unlocked and his wife and son nowhere to be seen.
“They left in the morning, sir,” The watchman said.
“Did she leave with her belongings?” Kevin asked, although he already knew the answer.
“Yes,” He replied.
Kevin picked up his phone and called Renee. Her mother picked up the call, told him to stay away from her family, and hung up immediately. His first instinct was to go and talk to her in person. However, given the anger her mother had displayed it wouldn’t have fixed anything.
Like the last time, he decided to give her space as he dealt with his parents, who were also furious. He hoped that once her anger had faded, she would reach out so they could talk, but Renee remained silent for weeks. Four months later, Kevin received divorce papers. Staring at them, he remembered what his father had told him before he decided to marry and realized he was right.
