When my last relationship ended, I thought that was the last I’d hear from my ex. Like most of my relationships, things didn’t end well and we couldn’t stay friends even if I wanted to. In addition, the reason we broke up was because he was too possessive and jealous of me. It was sweet at first but after one year of dating, things began to get toxic and I even had to move to a different apartment.
I never imagined that I would be in my situation. Usually, I have excellent taste in men and I only date the best. However, my friend introduced me to this guy and we grew to like each other. In the beginning, my spirit absolutely rejected him. I just hated him for no reason but he was adamant and I started seeing a good side of him.
He used to do household shopping for me, send me money for electricity and literally begged me to go to eat at his place. After a few months of knowing him, I agreed to be his girlfriend. It was a bit forced since he had started to sleep in my apartment. Besides, he had gone out of his way to prove that he was a good guy.
“After my last relationship, I stayed for four months without dating anyone or having sex.”
“That’s impressive.”
I was genuinely impressed since when we met I was a bit promiscuous. After proving himself, I figured I might as well date him and enjoy more girlfriend privileges. I mean, if he was spoiling me that much and so wasn’t his girlfriend, what would he do if I was? He didn’t disappoint. I was so happy in the relationship at first that I completely transformed. I gained some healthy weight and I was glowing like I was married to a millionaire.
Things were fairly normal for some time but I noticed that he would get jealous whenever I went to meet my friends or even go to get my hair done.
“Where are you?” He asked over the phone.
“At the salon.”
“Let me video call you so I can see.”
No matter how much I protested, he insisted on video-calling me whenever I was out. It got in the way of my social life since any time I would go out, he had to call and we would get into a big argument. Over time, I stopped going out as much and when I went to the salon, he would escort me. This also started feeling more like a burden than a cute gesture.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was when I got a new job and he called the reception to ask whether I was there.
“Hanna, do you know Simon?”
“Who is Simon?” I said innocently.
“He called yesterday to ask whether you were around.”
It then clicked that Simon, my boyfriend, had called my place of work for no reason other than to spy on me. I had had enough of the jealousy and possessiveness and I wanted to move from my apartment. Since I had a new job, I felt financially secure to live on my own and even move to a bigger apartment.
However, I knew that Simon wouldn’t take it well. We had lived together for over a year and he hadn’t let me out of his sight for one second. The thought of me living in another apartment after getting a new job would enrage him.
I tried a few times but it didn’t go well. After consulting with a few friends, they suggested that I get a bodyguard to act as my security as I moved. They also came to offer support and extra protection. Simon was helpless in the presence of the bulky, 6 foot man. I managed to move to another apartment and start a new life.
Things were back to normal and my social life was thriving. I hadn’t been that happy in a while. A month into living in my new apartment, a new tenant moved into the house next to mine. I didn’t think much of it. In fact, I barely met her. Then one day as I was walking to my apartment, I saw the one person I hoped to never see in my life standing right outside my door.
“How did he know where I was?” I wondered. “Had he hacked my phone?”
I knew he was capable of almost anything due to his possessive nature so Ali wouldn’t be surprised if he hacked my phone to know my location. I never really found out how he knew where I was.
“Where is your bodyguard now?”
I don’t know why but I panicked and screamed my heart out. A few neighbour’s came out including the new one and he went inside her house without saying anything. I then went to the guard to report the incident who accompanied me to the house. After a few knocks, she opened the door.
“Where’s the man who entered your house?”
“He’s right here.”
Simon emerged with a smug look on his face.
“Who is this man?” The security guard asked.
“He’s my boyfriend?”
“Okay. Behave yourself, young man, or we’ll evict you.”
The incident was over and I went back to our apartment but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It seemed too much to be a coincidence.
From that day, I kept having strange run-ins with his alleged girlfriend. Wherever I went in the apartment building, she was there. I felt like I was being watched and stalked like prey. I have had to live like this for a few months now since I don’t know if I happen to move, he’ll follow me to the new apartment as well. My friends told me to get a restraining order against him but I feel like it will be useless. I’ve tried talking to him to leave me alone and I can only hope that one day, I will be able to get through to him.
