My ex and I had been friends long before we started dating so when we broke up, we still maintained our friendship. We would visit each other all the time and sometimes, people questioned whether we had really broken up. It was not until he got a new girlfriend that people believed our relationship was over. I was happy for him when he started dating again since he swore that the girlfriend was the best thing that ever happened to him.
At first, I could see that she made him happy. Martin changed the way he dressed and he became more focused in life. He even moved to the apartment where I lived since it was better than where he was. He also wanted to be closer to me so I could help him when he was having relationship problems. His girlfriend and I didn’t get along immediately. I could tell that she didn’t like me and was only friendly because I was friends with Martin. Nonetheless, we were cordial and never argued.
On the other hand, the new couple was constantly bickering. I’d get calls in the middle of the night telling me to come to their apartment.
“Could you come to my house? Martin asked.
“What is it now?”
“Just come.”
I’d get up, wear some decent clothes and make my way to their apartment which was on another block.
“As usual, you call your ex.” She said as soon as I walked in.
“She was my friend long before she became my girlfriend.” He explained.
“You know I’ve been really tolerant of your relationship but it seems you’re taking advantage of my kindness. Other girls wouldn’t be as nice.”
“Why are you changing the subject? I just caught you texting other men.”
They argued for another ten minutes as I stood in silence.
“Don’t act as if you’re so innocent. I know you usually go to her house first before coming here after work.”
I barely got a word in until they were both exhausted.
“Can I go now? I don’t even know why you called me but next time, don’t.” I said and left.
Despite my warning, Martin still called me the following night when the pair was arguing, and like I loyal friend I went to my friend’s rescue. I could tell that things were getting out of hand every time they argued but since my friend loved his girlfriend, he wasn’t going to leave her. So, I decided to befriend her to know why she felt insecure about our relationship.
I invited her out for lunch one day and she surprisingly showed up in a good mood. We had such a good time that it was hard to believe the same girl secretly hated me. however, I knew her too well to know that this was just an act so I still kept my guard up. We went back home and for the first time in a long time, I didn’t get a call in the middle of the night from Martin.
I thought things were good or at least, she was a bit more tolerant of me after our lunch so I planned another hangout. This time, she invited me to Martin’s house so she would cook for me. I agreed and waited for her call to let me know that she was ready. One hour passed without a call. Another one passed until I decided to go and check up on her.
“Maybe she needed help preparing lunch.” I thought to myself.
As I approached the door, I could hear loud, hearty laughter coming from Martin’s house. I could also hear his girlfriend’s voice. I figured she had guests and that was why she hadn’t called me. As I turned to go back to the house, I heard her mention my name.
“I’ll beat some sense out of that best friend of his one of these days.” She said followed by roaring laughter. “She thinks she’s all that because she has a car and some business. I’ll show her I’m also a boss.”
“What did she do?” one of her friends asked.
“She’s always coming here to defend her bestie when we’re arguing. The other day, Martin said he was going to sleep at her place. I told him if he left this house, he shouldn’t come back.”
They laughed again.
I stood there for a good 30 minutes listening to my best friend’s girlfriend talking bad about me. This was after we had had lunch and thought that things were cool between us. She had explained that she didn’t like it when I came over in the middle of the night and I told her the only reason I come is that Martin begged me.
After hearing her side and explaining my side, I truly believed she was more understanding of the situation. Apparently not. Once I had heard enough, I turned back and returned to my house. I thought about telling Martin what his girlfriend had said about me but I didn’t want to upset him.
I got a call from her after two hours telling me that she had stepped out but she was back in the house.
“I’ve also left the house. I’ll be back in the evening.” I lied.
I didn’t know what she was calling me for and I didn’t want to find out. Even though I was significantly bigger and stronger than her, I didn’t want to fight my best friend’s girlfriend. Besides, her friends might have been there still waiting for me to show up so they could all beat me.
Coincidentally, Martin broke up with her that evening. I hadn’t said anything to him but I found out the next day when I went over to his place and found her packing her things. She gave me a dirty look and continued packing as Martin and I whispered to each other and chuckled. I’m happy he got out of that relationship since the girl was bad news. He’s better off without her.
