Finding a man was never a problem for Nicki. She was the type of woman that would walk into a room and immediately turn heads. It wasn’t because she was curvy and well-toned or had a good eye for fashion. Though she did have all these, many people gravitated towards her because of her confidence. She was the kind of girl that would command a room and that kind of girl attracted a very specific type of man. She was used to rich, cocky men approaching her, leading her on and breaking her heart. So when she met Noah – a nice guy who had a nice bank account to match – she thought she had hit the jackpot.
Nicki’s best friend had been trying to set her up with someone for a long time but it never seemed to work. They all turned out to be arrogant like the previous guy. She decided to organize a dinner party where she invited her closest friends. Noah wasn’t one of her close friends but he came as a plus one. It was ironic because Nicki ended up falling for the guy who wasn’t even invited.
“I like that guy.” She told her best friend then looked at Noah’s direction.
“Oh, that’s Simon’s friend. I don’t really know him that well but I’ll ask Simon to introduce you.”
They both got up and walked towards Simon who was sitting next to Noah.
“Hey, Simon. Who’s your friend?” Nicki asked.
“Oh, this is Noah.” He answered as Noah got up to greet the ladies. He was tall with a chiselled body. He wore a gold, silk shirt that he had buttoned halfway and black fitted jeans.
Nicki had a thing for men with good style. Her best friend had warned about such men because they had a reputation of being scammers or being gay. But she couldn’t help it. She liked what she liked. So far, Noah was checking many of her boxes which made her overlook many red flags.
As the night progressed, she fell for him more and more. He was charming and knew the right words to say. Additionally, he seemed to enjoy most things that Nicki did. He was into self-care, spa dates, and karaoke nights and he attended Sunday brunch religiously. None of it sounded strange to her. It was a new age and men took care of themselves.
They ended up chatting the whole night and even after dropping her off, they continued chatting on the phone. The attraction was so strong that the very next day, Noah came to pick her up and took her on a proper date.
This was the first time that Nicki experienced such treatment. The man was kind to her and wanted to show her a good time with nothing in return. That didn’t happen very often. In fact, her previous boyfriend had been so toxic that she had to call the police to help her move out when they broke up.
After their date, Noah drove her back to her apartment. She tried to invite him for a drink but he declined, claiming that he had a business meeting the following day. Again, she didn’t think much of it and took his word for it.
They began dating exclusively and even made it Instagram official. That was when Nicki started hearing rumours that he was gay. When she posted him online, people would comment that he was hitting on them and that he was seen at a gay nightclub. She brushed them off as rumours since none of her close friends including the guy who introduced him to her mentioned anything about being gay.
“Babe, I can’t handle these rumours anymore. Like it’s getting worse. People are calling me now saying that they got my number from his phone. I don’t know what to do.”
“Relax. If he’s gay, why would he be dating you? The hottest girl?”
“Maybe he’s just using me as a cover.”
“No, girl. I know you’re used to men treating you wrong, but he’s a good guy. I don’t think he’s gay.”
Nicki took her best friend’s word for it and ignored the rumours. They continued dating for over one year and he said nothing about being gay. One of her colleagues at work finally came to her to prove that her boyfriend was indeed gay. He was in the LGBTQ community and had recently come out officially. He happened to go to the said nightclub that Noah was spotted in and met him there. They exchanged numbers and they had been texting each other ever since they met.
He showed her the text messages and suddenly everything seemed to make sense. She remembered many occasions when Noah would post that he was at the spa and when she asked why he didn’t invite her he said that it was a last-minute thing
“Oh my God, it all makes sense now.”
“I’m sorry, girl.” Her colleague said.
“It’s okay. You’ll be surprised, this isn’t the worst thing a man has done to me.”
Later that day, Nicki confronted Noah about the gay allegations. This was the first time they were even talking about it.
“It’s true. I was in that club. Actually, I go there a lot. And yeah, I know the guy you’re talking about.” He said referring to Nicki’s colleague.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I don’t know. I was attracted to you as well.”
“Do you think I wanted to share a man with another man? How desperate do you think I am?”
“It’s not that I thought you were desperate. We just had a good connection and I didn’t want to throw it away.”
“What will I tell my friends? They literally thought we were couple goals.”
“You don’t have to tell them anything. I’ll talk to Fred and ask him not to say anything.”
“Fine. That will be good. I’ll just tell them that it wasn’t working out between us.”
That’s exactly what Nicki said and they believed her. Though they eventually found out that Noah was gay, she played dumb and acted like it was her first time finding out too. She still keeps in touch with him and they meet occasionally. However, she is done dating for a long time.
