I got married when I was young to a man I barely knew or loved. After I finished high school, my father showed up with a strange man and told me he was my husband. I packed my belongings and went with the man to the city where he worked as a salesman. I tried to fall in love with my husband but he was more than 15 years my senior and we didn’t have a lot of things in common. He also travelled a lot because of his work which only made me feel more lonely and isolated in the marriage. I hated my marriage. However, a year after getting married, I welcomed a beautiful baby girl and my life changed.

I was no longer lonely. My baby girl became like my best friend. For a long time, it was just me and her until I got pregnant again with a boy. I started to appreciate the joys of marriage after having children. Even though he wasn’t romantic or affectionate, my husband was a good father and did everything he could to give our children a good life.

We weren’t rich but we lived a comfortable life. I dedicated myself to raising my children and making sure that they felt loved. It paid off because they both grew into the most beautiful, confident adults. My daughter remained my best friend and we did almost everything together. So, when she got her first boyfriend, I was the first to know.

“I met a good guy, mum.” She said excitedly.

“Where did you meet him?”

“At the mall. He works at a restaurant there.”

“Okay. I have to meet him too.”

“Of course. I know you’ll like him.”

Jasmine arranged a day for me to meet her new boyfriend. We went to the mall and I got to meet him and one of his friends. He was really nice and polite which made me feel comfortable with him dating my daughter. His friend, Ali, was really nice too.

“Are you Jasmine’s sister?” He asked.

“I’m her mum,” I replied while laughing.

“Wow, Jasmine had a really pretty mum.”

I was flattered by the attention but didn’t think much of it. From that day, Jasmine invited me to her dates several times which I didn’t mind since it was an excuse to leave the house. My husband was also okay with it since I was supervising her dates and ensuring that she didn’t get in trouble.

During those dates, I would meet with Ali regularly and we became good friends. One thing led to another and we started seeing each other secretly.

“I miss you so much. Let’s meet at the hotel tomorrow.” He messaged me.

“Okay. I’ll meet you there.”

Since my husband travelled a lot, it was easy to spend time with my new young lover. It was exciting at first. I felt like a teenager who was in love for the first time especially since I didn’t experience it when I was a teenager.

However, things started moving really fast which was scary. I was scared that my husband would find out about the affair and I would lose everything.

“You have to stop calling me in the middle of the night. My husband will find out about us.” I explained to Ali.

“Why don’t you divorce him? You say that you’re not happy with him.”

“I know, but it’s not that easy.”

“Divorce him if you love me.” He insisted.

Ali was pressuring me to get a divorce from my husband so we could be together. To be honest, I was considering it since I wasn’t happy in my marriage but the more I thought about the more I realized it was a bad idea.

Ali wasn’t happy that I wasn’t getting a divorce. He started threatening to tell my husband about our affair so he would leave me.

“Don’t be silly. You don’t know my husband. He’s capable of anything.”

“I don’t care. I will fight him too. I’m a man too.”

Ali was serious about telling my husband about the affair so I could get a divorce. I wasn’t going to let him ruin my marriage so I decided to tell my daughter to help me change his mind.

“I’ve been having an affair with Ali,” I said to her.

“What? How long?”

“He started hitting on me the day I met him and now he’s threatening to tell your father about the affair. I need your help to stop this.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll take care of it.”

Jasmine suggested that we get a few men who would beat Ali up to scare him. I wasn’t a fan of the idea but my daughter insisted that it was the only way Ali would leave me alone.

“We can get some of my cousins to go and beat him up.”

“This sounds wrong. What if we get caught? We could go to jail.”

“We won’t get caught.”

Reluctantly, I went along with the plan and helped to get everything ready. On the day they planned to beat up Ali, they asked him to message him and lure him to a parking lot where they would ambush him.

However, when Ali got there, he sensed that something was wrong and drove away. The guys followed him with their car and we followed them behind. Ali started speeding and driving recklessly. He lost control of his vehicle and got into an accident which claimed his life.

After that night, we went home thinking that our problems were over but they had just begun. The following day, the police showed up at our place and arrested us for Ali’s death.

They found messages between me, my daughter and the other men planning to beat up Ali. They also caught our cars on CCTV chasing down Ali which linked us to his death. We were charged with murder and sentenced to life in prison.
