From a young age, Amelia believed that her family was cursed. Only one of her mother’s sisters was married. Every other member of her family was either divorced or a single parent. This didn’t stop her from believing in love and the possibility of a long-term commitment. However, she still feared ending up like the people in her family.
Amelia hated embarrassment more than anything. In a situation where someone would argue or raise a concern, especially in public, she would always remain silent. Her younger sister Luna tried her best to convince her of how dangerous bottled-up anger can be, but she didn’t listen.
Jackson and Amelia met in university. At first glance, Jackson knew that he wanted to be with Amelia. However, he could never get the chance to speak to her. Fortunately, they both ended up doing a project together and everything flowed from there.
Two years after graduation, Jackson had managed to set up his own company and decided to propose to Amelia. Her family didn’t even bother to have a sit down with Jackson. The minute he mentioned the word marriage, they were both shocked and excited. Amelia was also overjoyed mainly because she believed she was the one destined to break her family’s curse.
The planning process went smoothly and so did their wedding. Jackson and Amelia had decided to spend a year enjoying each other’s company before having children. However, she ended up getting pregnant during their honeymoon. Amelia was surprised at first, but Jackson’s consistent support made it easier for her to accept.
The first few months everything went well. The problem began when Amelia’s body started to change. Jackson admired his wife for all her amazing qualities but the one that he loved the most was her beauty. She had all the features he admired in a woman. A slim-thick body, even-toned skin and small feet.
As the months went by, she started to struggle with hyper-pigmentation, stretch marks and weight gain. In as much as Jackson understood that pregnancy affects women’s bodies differently, he couldn’t overlook how much she had changed. Nevertheless, he tried his best not to speak about it.
By the end of the nine months, Amelia gave birth and Jackson was so excited that he forgot about her body changes. A year later, he started to notice that Amelia was not making an effort to go to the gym. Her days consisted of work, spending time with the baby, eating and going to bed. He tried his best again to let it go but couldn’t and with time Amelia started to notice that something was wrong. His overwhelming thoughts started to affect their sex life, and this made Jackson even more stressed.
To calm his nerves, he would go drinking every weekend. During one of his outings, he met Olivia who somehow looked so much like a younger version of Amelia. Jackson had never once thought of cheating on his wife, but he couldn’t help being attracted to her. One night of pleasure turned into a habit and eventually, Olivia became his side chick.
Jackson knew that if his wife ever found out it would cause issues, so he always managed to stay discreet. This went on well for a while until one day, Amelia noticed a feminine smell on his clothes. She knew that if she confronted him, he would end up lying so she decided to secretly follow him.
Amelia knew that they had intimacy issues but the moment she saw Olivia she could already guess the reason. Jackson came back home late and tried to sneak into the house but was shocked when his wife turned on the lights.
“Did you have fun tonight?” She asked bluntly.
“Yeah, I just had a couple of drinks with the guys,” He replied.
“There’s no point in lying Jackson, I know you were at a hotel with another woman,” She said.
Jackson opened his mouth to reply but decided to remain silent.
“From today on wards, you are not going to see that woman again and we will forget all this happened,” Amelia added.
“What?” Jackson asked.
“Are we clear?” Amelia said.
Jackson nodded his head.
“Good, I’m heading to bed, stay with the baby until she falls asleep,” She replied while walking away.
Jackson spent hours trying to wrap his head around what had happened that he didn’t realize his daughter had blacked out. The following day, they all woke up early to go for Amelia’s sister’s birthday. The whole time Jackson was tensed that his wife would expose his cheating adventures but was surprised when she didn’t.
Days later he finally realized why. Jackson had always known that his wife hated embarrassment but never knew her thoughts about her family. The week after the birthday, he overheard Amelia talking to her sister on call. The worst part was the call was on speaker.
“How can you stay with a cheater?” Luna asked.
“You don’t understand, I can’t leave him. It was a mistake and we both agreed it won’t happen again,” Amelia replied.
“Are you hearing yourself? He slept with this woman countless times!” Luna said.
“Let’s just drop this conversation, Luna,” Amelia snapped.
“I know that you wanted to be the one to break the curse, but you can’t accept bad treatment just to prove a point,” Luna replied.
In the days that followed, he thought deeply about her family and realized that they did have a pattern. This then led him to wonder if Amelia loved him or if she accepted his proposal just so she could break the curse. The never-ending thoughts then pushed him to start his weekend drinking cycle all over again.
After a few weekends he bumped into Olivia, and they ended up going back to their old habits. A few months later, Jackson and Amelia were invited to get together by one of their friends. Towards the end of the day, some of the guests suggested that they should all go to a club. Amelia was a bit sceptical, so she decided to let Jackson go. However, just as she was about to leave, Luna called and informed her that their mum had decided to watch over their daughter.
By then, Jackson had already left with some of their friends, so she decided to take an uber. At the entrance of the club, Amelia bumped into Luna and some of her cousins. As they walked in, she walked ahead stretching her neck hoping to see Jackson. After searching for a while, she smelt his cologne and decided to follow the scent.
Jackson was seated at a corner table whispering into a woman’s ear. Even with all the smoke in the air, Amelia could tell that the woman was Olivia.
“Is that Jackson I see at the corner?” Luna asked.
Amelia walked up to the table and grabbed Olivia by the hair, pulling her away from Jackson.
“Didn’t I tell you to stop seeing this woman?”
“You are embarrassing us; can’t we just talk about this outside?” Jackson replied.
Amelia stormed out of the club and stood by the entrance. Just then, Olivia walked out and slapped her. The two ended up on the floor fighting. Jackson rushed to try and stop them but by the time he was able to do so, people had already taken their fair share of videos.
At that very moment, Amelia remembered what Luna had said to her about her anger blowing up. She looked at her husband who was busy asking his side chick if she was okay and could feel her anger boiling again. Instead of arguing or starting another fight, she walked up to Jackson, grabbed the car keys and his wallet and left.
The following day, Amelia woke up to an empty bed and the cries of her daughter. As she struggled to get out of bed, her mother and sister walked in holding her baby. Just before she could say a word, they hugged her, and she ended up bursting into tears.
Amelia knew that the story of her club fight had already reached her family. Surprisingly, the rest of the family didn’t judge her. Later she realized that all the people who had gone through divorces or were single parents were victims. This helped her to change her mind set about how she perceived her family. Somehow, it also made it easier for her to process what had happened with Jackson. The pain was still there but at least the shame had faded away.
