When doing makeup, it’s always important to blend the foundation on your neck and upper chest. In addition, the neck needs extra care during your skin care routine. This isn’t just for your face. This is because the neck has fewer sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and stem cells. Research shows that stem cells are largely responsible for skin renewal. As a result, the skin in the neck is more susceptible to premature ageing.

An ageing neck is visible through thick jowls, deep lines, thin skin, laxity, and vertical bands. Neck ageing is inevitable but you can slow down the process and ensure your neck doesn’t look older than you are. Necklines usually start appearing in your 30s. However, intense necklines start at 40. Habits such as smoking, sun exposure, poor diet, air pollution, and bad posture increase the risk of premature neck ageing.

Natural Ways To Rejuvenate Your Skin And Hair

Steps to prevent premature neck ageing

1. Don’t spray perfume on your neck

Perfume usually has a high alcohol content. This increases the neck’s sensitivity to the sun. The neck is not directly exposed to UV rays because the jaw partially shadows it. This gives the neck less protection than the face or the top of the chest. Spraying perfume on the neck makes the skin on the neck more likely to get affected by the sun. It leads to age spots and pigmentation. Apply sunscreen to your neck instead. The best places to spray or apply perfume are on your wrists or the back of your ears. You can also apply it to the collar of your shirt.

2. Avoid text neck

This is when you lower your head to look at your phone, book, or laptop. Younger people are getting necklines due to how frequently they use their phones while looking down. Additional studies show that text neck can change the structure of the spine, inflammation of the muscles and ligaments, and increase the risk of arthritic damage. Text neck can also lead to headaches, muscular weakness, pain in the neck and shoulders, and a stiff neck. When using your phone or reading a book, avoid lowering your neck. You can get a neck support device where you look at your phone at eye level. You can also sit up straight and hold up your phone or book at eye level. Get a stand for your computer to ensure that your screen is at eye level.

3. Extend your skincare routine

Your skin care routine shouldn’t be limited to your face. A periodic skin care routine should include exfoliation, while a daily routine requires cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection. Don’t forget to handle your neck as well. Get moisturiser products that help build collagen. These include vitamin C, retinoids, and retinols. When cleansing your face at the end of the day, ensure you clean your neck as well.

6 Benefits Of Incorporating A Moisturizer Into Your Skincare Routine

Remember to apply sunscreen on your neck, and other areas that will be exposed to the sun. Try to avoid perfumed sunscreen for your neck. Antioxidant serums can also help your skin prevent premature ageing. Retinoids are a great product to apply before bed. 7 Myths About Sunscreen That You Should Ignore

There are also products specifically formulated to keep the neck supple. They’re thicker than face products to make it easier for them to last on the skin. They promote collagen production and increase elasticity. One pump of neck cream applied upwards twice daily can help keep your neck supple. This is a procedure that’s more suitable for older people.

6 Tips To Give Your Skincare Routine A Makeover

What should you do when you get wrinkles?

Gravity works on the neck and eventually, the wrinkles start to form. However, sun damage and other lifestyle habits can lead to premature neck ageing. When you notice wrinkles when you’re still young, there are steps you can take to reduce them.

Hydrating facials can improve the texture of the skin. They also make the neck skin smoother and make it better at absorbing active agents in skin care products.

Microneedling is a long-term solution to wrinkling that creates micro-injuries on the skin. The needles can treat acne, scars, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles. It generates new collagen and new skin tissue. It’s not invasive. However, it does cause inflammation or irritation immediately after the procedure. This lasts for a few days. It’s important to remember to get this procedure only from certified dermatologists or cosmetic surgeons. It also requires long-term maintenance.
