As women grow older, they’re likely to experience lower libido, vaginal dryness, or urinary incontinence. This can lead to painful penetrative sex and difficulty achieving orgasm. As a result, many women have to try multiple treatments to resolve this. However, there is one radical treatment known as the o-shot where doctors take plasma from the patient’s blood and transfer it to the genital area to stimulate the vagina and clitoris.
How Sex Drive Changes As You Age
How the O-shot works
The O-shot, or orgasm shot, takes platelet-rich plasma from the patient’s blood. It’s used to help reduce age-related symptoms. The procedure is also touted to help achieve orgasms and improve the quality of orgasms. Different Types Of Orgasms And How You Can Make Sex More Intense
Platelets are the components in blood that play an important role in healing. When you have an open wound, platelets react with oxygen in the air to trigger clotting and closing the wound. This is enabled by proteins known as growth factors. The O-shot claims to create new blood vessels and new nerves in the vaginal area.

Do platelet-rich plasma treatments work?
PRP treatments have historically been used to treat injuries among athletes. Doctors use them to treat muscular wounds, and broken bones to help accelerate healing. However, studies show that they may not be completely effective. They also help with recovery from surgery and hair loss. Doctors isolate the platelet-rich part of the blood and inject it into the affected area. Research shows that platelets release up to 35 different growth factors which can help with healing.
The O-shot was created by Dr Charles Runels, an American doctor from Alabama. His research suggested that adding platelet-rich plasma to the vagina and clitoris improved female sexual function. He collected clinical anecdotes from patients before and after the procedure, and according to his findings, patients had better orgasms after.
Other potential benefits of the O-shot include:
- Increased arousal
- More lubrication
- More intense orgasm
Some doctors also suggest it can also help reduce urinary incontinence. The procedure can also manage skin conditions such as lichen slerosus which causes white patches in the genital area and lichen planus which are purple itchy flat bumps that occur in the mouth and genitalia. Dr Runels conducted inconclusive studies with rabbits to show that PRP can help treat lichen sclerosus. In addition, there is a possibility that it can help manage chronic pain from childbirth.
The only research regarding the effectiveness of the O-shot is the non-peer-reviewed pilot study that only observed 11 women by Dr. Runels. Only 7 women showed any improvement in their sex lives. Dr. Runels claims PRP stimulates the growth of stem cells, collagen, and blood vessels. There is no scientific evidence backing up the effectiveness of the O-shot or clear evidence of the success rate of PRP. The procedure also hasn’t been proven safe by the US Food and Drug Administration.
Important Health Screenings All Women Should Have
What to expect during an O-shot
The practitioners will ask you questions about the history of your health. Once you’re considered healthy enough to do the procedure, the doctor will apply a numbing agent to the vagina, and clitoris. The doctor then draws blood and spins it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and the platelets. A local anaesthetic is then injected into the vaginal area then platelets are injected into the area. It takes about 30 minutes. Some clinics suggest that it takes up to 12 weeks to get the full benefits of the O-shot. Improvements are supposedly visible within three weeks.
Potential side effects
Patients can get allergic reactions. The injections can also cause bruising in the vaginal area. The O-shot can also cause dermatitis, infection, numbness, pain, redness, scar tissue, and swelling at the injection site. Some patients have also shared that they felt a buzzing sensation and increased vaginal sensitivity. Ensure you seek immediate medical attention if you experience fever, pus, and severe bleeding or swelling.
Doctors who offer this treatment say that the sensitivity wears off after a few hours. Patients can have sex within a few hours of the procedure. In Kenya, the procedure costs around Kes. 140,000. There are no special qualifications needed to provide this treatment. Make sure you talk with your gynaecologist before undergoing this procedure.
