The Singlehood Series: His Best Friend Asked Me Out After We Got A Divorce

Even though my relationship with Ben wasn't perfect, Chris' behaviour made it more difficult.

I didn’t like Chris from the first day I met him. He was always so flirty and touchy with me even though he knew I was dating his best friend, Ben. When I confronted him about it, he would say that Ben was okay with it and he also did the same thing with his girlfriend.

However, he started going as far as badmouthing his best friend so I would break up with him. It rubbed me off the wrong way but I used to put up with it since he was Ben’s closest friend and I wanted to get along with him.

“I see you’re becoming a regular at our meetups.” He said to me.

“Yeah,” I answered coldly.

“By the way, I never asked you. How did you meet Ben?” He asked.

“At a work event.”

“Oh… I thought you were one of his one-night stands who stuck around.”

I didn’t say anything since I didn’t know how to respond to him.

“This man isn’t loyal. Don’t trust him.” He added.

“He’s loyal. I haven’t seen or heard anything bad about him.” I defended Ben.

“I’m just trying to help you. Remember he’s my best friend and I’ve known him for more than 10 years.”

No matter how hard I tried to ignore Chris, he wouldn’t leave me alone. I became accustomed to his flirtation and awkward conversations. In hindsight, maybe Chris had good intentions. It just came off badly or maybe I was blinded by love.

However, my relationship with Ben was far from perfect. He was a good guy but he had a few skeletons that threatened to break our relationship. I particularly had an issue with his female friends. Ben had a lot of beautiful female friends which would make even the most confident woman feel a bit insecure.

To make matters worse, he would go out with them without telling me. I would find out about it later from Chris. After confronting him about it, he started cutting them off one by one and by the time we were celebrating our 6 month anniversary, Ben was all mine.

From then on, the relationship was pure bliss. Ben treated me like a queen. We even started talking about marriage. After dating for a year, Ben proposed to me and I said yes. Even though we had been through a lot of ups and downs, I didn’t have a doubt in my mind that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.

Word got out that we were planning on getting married and we received an overwhelming number of messages congratulating us. However, Chris wasn’t as happy about the news.

“I can’t believe you’re marrying him after everything he’s done to you.” He said over the phone.

“Ben has been nothing but nice to me. You’re just jealous and lonely.”

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

I was surprised to find out that Chris was going to be the best man at our wedding. I assumed that he wasn’t going to attend the wedding since he didn’t want me to marry Ben.

Chris couldn’t even let me enjoy my wedding day. I had managed to avoid him the whole day but during the evening party, he found me sitting alone and took advantage of the opportunity.

“Where’s your husband?” He asked.

“He’s in the washroom.”

“I just came from the washroom. He’s not there.”

“I don’t know where he is then.”

“I think I saw him talking to one of those girls he used to go out with.”

“Can’t you just be happy for us?”

“I’m happy for you but I’m just being real with you. Anyway, call me when you get a divorce so I can finally take you out for dinner.”

Chris had said a lot of absurd things to me but that one was unbelievable. I thought it was a joke so I laughed it off and quickly forgot about it.

Marriage wasn’t what I thought it would be. I was constantly under pressure from Ben to get pregnant which we were struggling with. He also criticized my homemaking skills. After trying for almost a year, I finally got pregnant. However, this blissful moment was short-lived. I got a miscarriage which put more strain on my marriage. It felt like Ben blamed me for the miscarriage. The love fizzled within a short period of time and we decided to get a divorce.

It was a rough period and I felt so alone since most of my friends were Ben’s friends. They all took his side and I had no one to talk to except my family. Then one day, I got a call from Chris. He was the last person I wanted to talk to since I knew he would just make me feel worse. However, I was in a bad place and I desperately wanted to talk to someone.

“Hello,” I said.

“Hey, gorgeous. I thought you wouldn’t pick up.”

“I hope I won’t regret picking up.”

“Of course not. How are you doing?”

“I’m okay.”

“I know you’re not. You owe me a dinner date.”

“Why?”

“Remember I told you I’ll take you out for dinner when you get a divorce.”

“I had completely forgotten about that,” I said then laughed. “Well, I got a divorce so I guess I have to go for dinner with you.”

“It will be fun, I promise.”

“At this point, I just want to get out of the house and hang out with a friend.”

We went for dinner where Chris revealed that he was genuinely interested in me and that he felt bad that I got married to Ben. It was flattering to hear that and it made me feel good about myself. However, I was still recovering from the divorce and I wasn’t ready to date.

Chris was also not my type and dating him would only end in disaster. He proved that he was a good friend, though, and we stayed in touch from that day.
