Imagine if you could break up with someone and make jokes with them. It’s absolutely possible. A breakup is never easy and most people feel salty and heartbroken after. However, some have mastered the art of having an amicable breakup. This is when your relationship ends but you still keep in touch with the other person.

Since they’ve been a part of your life and you share some memories, it’s only natural to want them around even after you break up. It’s especially important to have an amicable breakup if you have children together. Here are some tips to have an amicable breakup.

  1. Be Honest

Forget about trying to let them down easily and be honest about how you really feel. At the same time, you should be careful about opening up since too much honesty can be hurtful. One of the most important things you should let your partner know is the reasons for the breakup. They will appreciate the honesty and get closure.

  1. Don’t Cause A Scene

It’s hard to stay friends with someone after they embarrass you publicly or even privately. However, it’s normal to get carried away by emotions and wanting to destroy the other person’s life. This will only make things worse and ruin any chances of keeping in touch. When breaking up, try to do it in the most civil way possible. Express your pain but avoid doing anything stupid.

  1. Listen Actively

Emotions can distract you from hearing what the other person has to say. However, to have an amicable breakup, it’s important to hear both sides of the story. Listen to your partner with an open mind and heart. Don’t cast judgment before you’ve heard what they have to say. Once they’ve expressed themselves, be prepared to address them and act accordingly.

  1. Forgiveness Is Key

It’s easy to blame the other person when a relationship fails but in most cases, a relationship fails due to the actions of both parties (unless in cases of cheating or abuse). If you feel wronged, you could try to forgive if it is possible. Key Things To Remember If You Are Struggling With Forgiveness

  1. Have A Support System

Having a good support system will determine how you deal with the breakup. Some people offer a shoulder to lean on while others point fingers. It’s up to you to choose the right people to confide in since it influences how you feel about your former partner after the breakup. To avoid having negativity around you, make it clear that you have no intention to talk badly about your ex.

  1. Take Some Time Apart

Saying in touch right after a breakup isn’t the best idea. Experts suggest that you stay at least one month apart before contacting your ex.  Taking time apart allows you to heal and let go of any ill feelings. It also allows you to find yourself and be comfortable with being single. So, whether you choose to remain friends or not, it’s necessary to have some time to yourself when you break up with your partner. 5 Fun Ways To Spend Your Me Time

  1. Prioritize Self-Care

Don’t forget to take care of yourself. Self-care after a breakup is one of the most important things you need. Breakups can be both emotionally and physically draining. This can put your mental health at risk and prevent you from having a healthy relationship with yourself. Practising self-care helps you feel good inside thus speeding the healing process.
