They met at the university. Bob was pursuing his undergraduate degree while Felicity was working towards getting a diploma. Bob was in his second year when Felicity joined the school. There were popular hangout places for different study levels, and that was where Bob saw Felicity spending time with other first-year students.
Felicity was a tall and beautiful girl. She also looked happy and often wore a smile.
“Hey,” Bob approached her.
“Hey,” responded Felicity.
“I was standing there for a few minutes and couldn’t help noticing that you’ve been smiling all through. You seem like a happy person and I like that vibe. Could I take you out for ice cream?” Bob asked her.
She was young and naïve, so the easiest of lines impressed her. She didn’t hesitate. They walked to an ice cream parlour outside the school, which marked their relationship’s beginning. Despite being a full-time student, Felicity found out that Bob was a hardworking man who found time for part-time gigs. Felicity was still under her parents’ care, and they paid for her accommodation and other bills.
Felicity lived in a small bedsitter close to the school, and within no time, Bob suggested they move in together. In this case, moving in together meant that Bob would move to Felicity’s house. The girl was in love and didn’t object. The move meant they could spend more time together. The move happened in her second semester of the first year.
Before Bob moved in with Felicity, she enjoyed spending time with other friends. After class, they would meet up and do different activities like typical college students. However, as soon as Bob moved in with her, things started changing. Bob didn’t like Felicity’s male friends, so her friends could no longer hang out at her place as long the guys in the crew were around. That meant that Felicity’s place was out of bounds now.
When Bob moved in, he argued that since Felicity’s parents were paying the rent, he could save up the money he got from his side hustles. “Babe, you know I’m saving this money for our future. Let’s spend what your parents are giving you and keep this for a rainy day,” Bob told Felicity. He even asked her to accompany him to the bank to open an account and would often ask her to take him to deposit more money whenever he was paid.
She gladly took him because he had convinced her he was doing what was best for them. In the house, Bob expected Felicity to take care of the chores. He would get angry if he needed to wear certain clothes and she was yet to wash them.
“Babe, I’ve had classes and haven’t yet done laundry,” Felicity explained.
“But you know my schedule, you should be better organized,” an angry Bob told her.
Bob also gradually created a wedge between her and her female friends. He always had something to say about them. At first, he had a problem with the single girls who would ‘pollute’ her mind. “A woman in a relationship needs to keep off the company of single, wild girls,” he told her. Soon after, the other friends in relationships were also a problem because, according to Bob, their boyfriends had no control over them.
Bob wasn’t quite a party animal, but he went clubbing. He, however, had a problem with Felicity partying. He would develop an attitude every time she had a little to drink. Once, they went out together and then forced her to cook for him despite knowing she was out of it. “A good woman always cooks for her man,” he argued. She got a minor burn in the process, and he showed no sympathy.
A year and a half later of dating, Felicity hardly had any friends. Bob alienated her from everyone she considered a friend. At one point, one of the remaining friends had a birthday planned. Felicity informed Bob of the invitation from the moment her friend told her about it. Bob only objected to her going the evening of the birthday.
Suddenly, Bob didn’t want her to go to the party and forbade her from going. As they were arguing, Felicity’s friend called. “Pick it up and tell them that I have forbidden you from going since you enjoy making me look like the bad person,” Bob told her. Felicity had to lie that Bob was unwell, so she couldn’t leave him alone.
At this point, Bob’s friends were the only people that Felicity could hang out with. He would also take her to family gatherings and expect her to serve him food as others queued to get food. He often commented on how a good woman should behave, and she obliged. This whole time, he would make Felicity spend the little money her parents sent her to buy food and other essentials in the house, claiming he was saving his money for them.
She felt trapped in playing the role after he had successfully alienated her from her friends. He then graduated to cheating on her. He spent the money he was making on other girls outside there but hardly did anything nice for Felicity. Bob would cheat with girls who wore the clothes he forbade Felicity from wearing, claiming they made her look like a ‘loose woman’, and it reflected poorly on him.
Eventually, Felicity left him when another woman physically assaulted her in public over Bob. Bob hardly defended her. Coincidentally, the incident happened as she was about to graduate, so she needed to move back home, which helped her cut ties with Bob.
