Growing up, you thought that once you are done with your teen years, the acne should be done with you too. Unfortunately, that is not the case, acne is known to affect adults well into their 40s. Some are even lucky to have acne-free teen years only to develop adult acne later in life. Acne is caused by various factors such as hormones, excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, and bacteria. Although it ranges in severity, it is very persistent and can be hard to get rid of.

If you are fortunate to get to the root cause of your acne and suppress it, you are among the lucky ones. For most, the battle with acne is life-long. However, just because you cannot beat it does not mean you cannot manage it. Here are some tips that can help you out.

Daily Skin Care Routine

One of the most important aspects to keep fresh breakouts at bay is having a consistent skincare routine. This is to constantly ensure that your pores are clean and do not harbour anything that can irritate your skin.

Invest in a quality cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. As you look into what products are best, ensure that you do your research. Some products can make your acne worse. Skin Purging Vs. Breaking Out: What To Look Out For

Avoid comedogenic products since they only work to clog your pores. This includes heavy moisturizers. It may take a while before you find products that work for you, but create a routine once you do. 6 Common Mistakes People Make With Their Skincare Routine

A Beginner’s Guide To Applying Skincare Products In The Right Order

Use medication sparingly

In severe cases of acne, medication such as Benzoyl Peroxide and Retin A can be prescribed by a dermatologist. Some of these drugs are known to clear acne successfully. While that is great news, your skin becomes dependent on them. This means that if you discontinue using the medication, your acne may come back full swing.

Avoid using medication unless you really have to. If you do, wean your skin off it slowly so your skin can adjust. While different people have different experiences when it comes to medication use, one should not rely on it too much.

Avoid stress

While trying to keep your stress levels at a minimum should be a lifestyle goal, it also helps with acne. As if worrying about life, in general, is not enough, some people worry about having acne.

Stress is a major acne culprit. It is said to increase the sebum levels in your body which clogs your pores. So if you do have acne, try not to obsess and worry too much about it. In the end, it will cause more harm than good. Lifestyle: 5 Simple Tips For Managing Stress

Do not overdo it

The skincare product market is huge. There are numerous products from different brands that all claim to give you healthier skin. Now while finding the right products for you is a game of trial and error, avoid using too many products at once.

Piling on products will probably do more harm than good. If you are to suffer an allergic reaction or irritation, it is impossible to find which product is responsible. Additionally, some products when used together may have adverse effects. Keep your routine clean and simple.  It is not about finding the most expensive products but about finding great products that work. Skincare: Signs You Have Sensitive Skin And How To Care For It

Choose Your Makeup Carefully

Makeup products have a lot of chemicals and substances that clog up the skin pores. While applying makeup is not prohibited when one has acne, you need to ensure you invest in genuine makeup products. Beauty: 7 Makeup Hacks For Oily Skin

Counterfeit products may end up irritating your skin even more. Additionally, if you are going to use makeup, ensure you wash it all off at the end of the day. Do not sleep with makeup, no matter how exhausted or sleepy you may be. Skincare: 6 Things You Must Do When Removing Your Makeup

If you choose to use medication, you should take a break from applying makeup to give your skin some time to breathe. Too many chemicals on your face is never a good thing.
