I never thought I’d be in an entanglement with a married guy since I mostly dated guys in my age group and most of them were too young to even think of marriage. Brian was no exception. He was a 23-year-old guy who looked like he was just starting off in life. We met at a dingy cyber cafe in town where I had gone to print some documents for a job application. He was quick to let me know that he owned the cyber cafe which did the trick.
“Are you going for a job interview?” He asked after seeing my resume.
“No, I’m just dropping off the documents at a certain office,” I answered.
“You know, if you’re looking for a job, I can employ you.”
“Where?” I asked eagerly.
“Here. This is my cyber cafe.”
I may have been desperate to get a job but I wasn’t that desperate to work at such a place. Nonetheless, I appreciated his offer and we continued chatting for a while.
“That’s really nice,” I said. “Not many people our age have their life together.”
“Not me, my dear. I started hustling when I was 14 years old.”
He invited me to sit next to him as he attended to his clients and we chatted for about two hours.
“I need to go before they close the office.”
“If you finish early, you can come back. I normally close at 8 pm.”
“Okay. I can come back. Let me drop off these documents.”
As I was leaving, he handed me Ksh 500 and said it was my lunch money. I didn’t want to take the money but he insisted. After dropping the documents, I went to a fast food restaurant and bought a plate of chips and chicken. I enjoyed my late lunch thinking about Brian.
Once I finished my meal, I ran some errands and then went to the cyber cafe around 7 pm.
“Welcome. I even thought you weren’t going to come back.”
“I had to but I’m so tired.”
“Do you want a massage?”
Before I could answer, he turned my chair and started massaging me. We were both quiet for a brief moment then someone interrupted us.
“Hi, Brian.” A woman said. “I hope your wife knows you’re here massaging other women.”
I felt so embarrassed that I left without saying anything to him. When I got home, I got a text from Brian asking me to come to his cyber cafe the following day.
“What about your wife?” I asked sarcastically.
“She was just joking. She meant my baby mama. I have a kid. I’ll explain everything tomorrow.” He replied.
I agreed to meet him just so he could explain whether or not he had a wife. Additionally, I felt like he was too good for me to give up that easily. Such men didn’t come by often and I wasn’t ready to count my losses.
I showed up at his cyber cafe in a short, blue sundress that revealed my silky smooth legs. He kept staring at me as if he had never seen a woman before. Most times, he would lose his train of thought and start mumbling. I thought it was funny and only made me like him more.
“So, what did you want to tell me?” I asked.
“The wife thing. Nancy is a wild girl. She likes embarrassing me in front of other women. I think she has a crush on me.”
“If you don’t have a wife, do you have a girlfriend?”
“No. I’m very single.”
That was all the confirmation I needed. We went out later that day and he asked me to be his girlfriend. We dated for about 5 months with nothing but pure bliss in our relationship. Brian treated me like a queen and made sure I didn’t need anything. He even promised that we would move in together by the end of the year since he was planning to move to a nicer apartment.
I rarely went to his cyber cafe since I saw him every day after work. However, I decided to pay him a surprise visit one day and found him in the company of another woman.
“Who is this?” I asked angrily.
“Who are you? Babe, who is this?” The woman asked.
“Babe? Is this your wife?”
“Wife? Do I look like someone’s wife?”
Before I could land a punch on the girl, Brian pulled her out of the cyber and talked to her briefly. She left and I never found out who she was. As usual, Brian came up with all sorts of excuses.
“She’s an ex who still thinks I have a thing for her.” He said.
However, I started to smell something fishy. There was no way that all those encounters were pure coincidences. First, it was the random girl asking whether Brian’s wife knew what he was doing. Then, this new girl who wasn’t even his alleged wife… It all seemed very suspicious and I decided to follow my intuition.
I pretended that I believed all his stories and everything was okay. We continued going on dates but I was simply waiting for the moment he let his guard down and left his phone unlocked. It never happened.
Luckily or unluckily, his wife found out about me and came to confront us while we were on a date. We were seated by a window and could see everyone that passed by. When she passed by, Brian let out a loud gasp then quickly got up and tried to go to the washroom but she caught up with him.
“So, you haven’t changed your ways?” She said surprisingly calmly.
It turned out Brian was a serial cheater and he indeed had a wife.
“You’re very pretty, my dear, but this man has 10 girls just like you calling him every day. He promised that they were just friends but now I’ve caught him red-handed.”
At that moment, I wanted the world to open up and swallow me whole but I composed myself and left the two to sort out their issues. He sent me a text late at night explaining what had happened and asking me to meet him again.
“Babe, I’m so sorry about today. I admit I have a wife but I’m not happily married. I only married her because she promised to set up a business for me. You’re my dream girl. I promise I will leave her for you. Please, can you come to my cybercafe tomorrow?” The message read.
Of course, I didn’t reply. I blocked his number and deleted all the messages he had sent me. He tried to contact me with different numbers but nothing was going to change my mind. Even though I was young, I knew my worth and I wasn’t going to be anyone’s side chick.
