Beverly and I had known each other for a couple of weeks but she had quickly grown on me. She wasn’t exactly my type but desperate times called for desperate measures. I wasn’t in a position to choose since I was single and in need of some company. After a few dates with her, I found out that we got along well and decided to pursue her. Little did I know she was playing the long con and she would organize for me to get robbed.

We met at a nightclub. I was extremely drunk and though my judgment was clouded, I was able to reject her advances. As I said, she wasn’t my type. I’m sure if she was I would have been robbed that same day. However, that must have been the day she decided that I would be her next victim. She forcefully took my number as my friends tried to get me in an Uber and the next day, I woke up with a severe hangover and countless WhatsApp messages.

“Hey baby, I loved meeting last night. You’re so fine.” One read.

I tried looking at the profile picture to try and jolt my memory but I came up empty. Her face was so unfamiliar that I could have sworn that I had never met her. Once I gathered myself, I made my way to the living room where I found my friend, Eric, watching a movie.

“Finally.” He said as soon as he saw me. “I was getting worried.”

“What time did we come back?”

“Around 5 am.”

“Damn,” I said walking to the kitchen to get some water.

“By the way, who were those girls from last night?”

“What girls?”

“You disappeared for almost one hour then we found you at the parking lot with a group of girls.”

“I think I was about to get robbed last night,” I said then showed him my phone. “Do you recognize this girl?”

“No. Who is that?”

“I don’t know. I woke up to so many messages from her.”

“She’s cute,” Eric commented. “Are you going to ask her out?”

“Maybe. I need to recover from this hangover first.”

I ended up messaging her back and after asking her out. The first date went perfectly. I couldn’t believe my luck in finding such a girl after such a long time being single. Though she wasn’t my type physically, she definitely had a great personality that instantly attracted me to her.

“We should hang out again,” I suggested.

“I’d love that.” She replied. “Should I bring something over?”

I wasn’t really ready for her to come to my place but since she had offered, who was I to say no? The moment she walked in, she didn’t waste any time in making a move on me. Everything felt so new and different but I was enjoying the spontaneity. She ended up spending the night at my place. However, I had to wake up early and leave for work. Since I didn’t want to disturb her, I asked her to leave the key with the mama mboga outside the apartment building.

“Of course.” She said in a cute sleepy voice.

I kissed her goodbye and left for work. While I was at work, I got a sharp pain in my stomach that felt like I was being stabbed. I tried to endure the pain but it got to a point that I couldn’t sit up. However, I managed to alert one of my workmates who told the manager and they called a taxi to take me to the hospital.

During the drive, the pain escalated to the point where I thought I was dying. My co-worker had accompanied me and I started telling him to alert my family.

“Please call my mother.” I requested him.

“I don’t have your phone. You’ll be fine, though. We’re almost at the hospital.”

After what seemed like a lifetime, we got to the hospital and were attended to promptly. My co-worker went back to the office after I was admitted. It turned out that I had a really bad case of food poisoning. As soon as I got to the hospital, I started vomiting and diarrhoea followed. Eventually, the medicine the doctors gave me took effect but I still needed to stay in the hospital overnight since I was so dehydrated and weak.

I didn’t have my phone or a way to communicate with my family. However, the doctor assured me that they had contacted my mother since I had listed her as my emergency contact. I wasn’t even sure if Beverly had left my key with the mama mboga as I had asked her to.

The following day, my co-worker came to check on me and bring my belongings. I was allowed to leave after making a full recovery and gaining some strength. The hospital took my insurance details then we took an Uber to my place.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary though the man mboga looked surprised to see me.

“Did you forget something?” She asked.

“No, I’ve just come back.”

“Okay.” She answered, still confused.

My co-worker and I went up the flight of stairs and got to my floor. I could see that something was unusual. The door was open but I thought that Beverly was still there. When I opened the door, I nearly fainted.

“I’ve been robbed,” I said in shock.

“Who robbed you?”

“That girl!! She must have planned this whole thing.” I said as I looked around my empty house.

My TV, couch, coffee table, fridge, microwave, bed, bedding, clothes, and even my buckets and cleaning stuff were all gone. The house was empty.

I went down to ask if anyone knew what had happened.

“Your girlfriend said that you had travelled for work and you wanted to move.” The caretaker explained.

“Why didn’t you call me to confirm?”

“I did but no one answered. I’m very sorry, boss.”

My co-worker offered to accommodate me as I figured out what to do next but I decided to go to my friend’s place. I explained what had happened and he couldn’t believe how unlucky I had been. We never really caught the girl or the people who robbed me but I learnt my lesson. I’ve never entertained a girl I met at a club ever again.
