George met his best friend Brian for another weekend meet-up. They spent most weekends together doing whatever needed to be done. They were like brothers. After running the day’s errands, they decided to go for a few drinks. They’d hardly settled in when Brian saw a beautiful girl at a nearby table.
“There are some fine women today,” Brian told George.
“Who did you see?” George asked Brian, laughing.
“The girls on that table,” Brian discretely pointed to them.
“Oh wait, we schooled with one of those girls,” George said.
He went over to their table. After saying the hellos, he asked the girls to join them. They did.
“Brian, this is Gracie. She was a ‘peng ting’ back in campus,” said George.
“Still is very beautiful,” said Brian.
“Tell him. What’s this ‘was’ business?” Gracie joked.
Gracie introduced her other two friends, and they all got talking. Two hours later, Gracie suggested they should move to a different club.
“There’s a new joint that’s recently opened, and today’s guest DJ is my friend,” said Gracie.
After inquiring how far it was, George and Brian decided to go with them. Gracie and Brian hit it off, and George entertained the other two girls. Due to Gracie’s connection to the DJ, they got a VIP table at the new club. Gracie would disappear and then come back to the table.
After a while, she came back, and they picked up the conversation with Brian. They pulled an all-nighter at the club and left at around six in the morning. Brian wanted to spend more time with Gracie, so he asked George if they could all go to his place since he had a bigger house.
George agreed on the condition that they would leave later in the day because he was travelling the day after and needed to rest. They agreed and headed to George’s house. They got food and more drinks on the way there.
The last thing George and Brian remembered was eating the food, pouring a drink for everyone and turning on the TV for chilled music. George woke up first at around 8 p.m. His head felt heavy. He felt off. He looked around, and the girls were gone. The living room door was slightly open. It was the cold breeze that woke him up.
He walked to close the door. After going to the washroom, he decided to check for Brian in the bedrooms. He found him and woke him up. Brian also struggled to wake up and complained of having the same physical feeling as he had.
“Where’s Gracie?” Brian asked.
“I didn’t find any of the girls when I woke up,” George told him.
Brian reached for his phone. It wasn’t in his pocket. He panicked but then found it under the pillow. That was strange because he never put his phone there. It was also out of charge. He asked George for a charger, and once he plugged it in and switched it on, he received a message. It was a message from his bank informing him that the transaction was successful.
“I have been robbed,” Brian told George.
“What?” They sent themselves money from my banking app.
“Check your other apps and messages,” George told Brian as he looked for his phone.
George found his phone, but it was blocked. It seemed as though the girls got it blocked as they were trying to guess his PIN.
“Gracie must have seen me put in my PIN when making the payment for the food,” said Brian.
“How much have they taken?” George asked Brian.
“So far, I can see they took money from one bank account, and they cleared the M-PESA balance,” said Brian.
They looked around the house to see what was missing. Immediately, George thought about the cash he had exchanged into a foreign currency because he was travelling the following day. He’d put it next to a duffel bag that he intended to use to pack some clothes. He went into his home office and discovered that they had also stolen his personal laptop but left the work one, which had a sticker on it with the company’s logo.
“They probably thought the company one would be easier to track,” said Brian.
“Yeah. This is crazy. How did they even decide on what to steal and what to leave?” Asked George.
“I think they went with what is easy to carry and less tracking. The money was sent to some guy,” Brian responded.
“The hell! Gracie was such a cool girl back in the day,” said George.
“We should probably have seen the red flag when she suggested we should move to the other club,” said Brian.
“Man! We’re too old to be carrying strangers home from the club now,” said George.
They both laughed as they deliberated on the next step. Reporting the crime to the police seemed futile since it would most likely involve bribes and time, which George didn’t have at that time.
“I’m lucky I only have this banking app on my phone. It’s the miscellaneous expenses and subscriptions account, so it didn’t have too much,” said Brian.
“I’m $600 short, and I need to get another laptop when I come back,” said George.
“Can you find Gracie through old classmates or something?” Asked Brian.
“I’ll ask around,” said George.
They looked around the house to check whether anything else was missing before checking with the gateman when the girls left. George tried looking for Gracie later, but all he got were similar stories from other classmates.
