“Babe,” Alicia called out to James or Jaymo, as she fondly called him.
“How much do you need?” James asked her.
“Aki babe, why are you making it sound like all I do is ask for money?” Alicia asked as she feigned a pout and curled her hair.
“Alicia, I’m running late for work, kindly get to the point. How much do you want?”
“Just 20K,” Alicia responded.
“Just 20K? Just? What do you need it for?”
“My friend just brought in some beautiful wigs and I also need to do my nails,” said Alicia.
“It’s not mid-month yet Alicia and I sent you your monthly allowance the other day, use that,” James said as he walked out of the house.
He slammed the door before Alicia could put another word in. Since starting his business, finances had gotten tighter, and suddenly he began noticing Alicia’s extravagance. He had tried explaining to her that they needed to keep expenses down for a while, but it seemed that Alicia didn’t understand him.
James mumbled as he walked down the stairs of his apartment block. He was angry at Alicia but needed to focus on the meeting he was about to attend. He was meeting with a potential client who could change his fortunes.
On the other hand, Alicia was fuming mad at James for turning down her request in that manner and walking out on her. She had already booked the wig her friend was selling. Since she started dating James, her lifestyle had changed. She was now a trendsetter among her peers. She enjoyed the “respect” other women gave her because she could afford the finer things. Many of her peers who sold beauty products had her on speed dial whenever they had new stock. When James was employed, money wasn’t an issue, and he spoiled her rotten, but getting a coin out of him had become quite the struggle.
She had been lucky that he hadn’t withdrawn her monthly allowance, but he had reduced it significantly. It had taken a huge fight to have it reinstated, and they had gone for two weeks without talking to each other. But James had a soft spot for her. Given the fight that morning, Alicia needed a strategy to convince James to give her the money.
She knew his weaknesses and needed no tutorial to exploit them to her advantage. That evening she made James his favourite meal and set up the house for a romantic evening. She even wore the red lingerie that James loved. James came home to love and pampering. He needed it after his meeting going south. He also went home with a bottle of gin.
He didn’t want to discuss his day, so Alicia’s evening plan was a welcome distraction. They had their dinner, some adult time with Alicia bringing her A game, and shots of the gin. It was an action-packed evening with alcohol to go with it. As they were cuddling, Alicia decided it was the best time to make another attempt at asking for the cash that she wanted.
“Babe, I was hoping you’ve had time to rethink the money I told you about in the morning.”
“Alicia, not this issue again.”
“But babe, I had already placed the order.”
“You placed an order without having the money?” James asked angrily.
“That’s why I was counting on you.”
“Alicia, do you even care about anything else except my money? Do you even know what kind of day I had?” Asked James as he got out of bed to pour himself some more gin.
“Of course, I care about you babe. I can’t believe you would ask me that. If you don’t want to give me the money it’s fine,” said Alicia. She then faced the wall, pulled up the duvet and pretended to sleep.
James went to the living room to watch something as he drowned his misery with the remaining gin. After finishing what was left, he went to bed an hour later. At around five o’clock in the morning, he felt Alicia move. He was debating whether he should wake up or wait for his alarm when Alicia walked to his side of the bed. She uncovered him slightly to check whether he was asleep, so he pretended he was still asleep. He thought she wanted to start a fight.
She then walked towards the laundry basket and removed his wallet from the pants he had worn the previous day. She found five thousand shillings and hurriedly took it, then returned the wallet. Alicia then went back to bed.
James waited for his alarm to go off and went to the shower. He deliberated on what to do about the situation. Part of him wished it was a dream because accepting that his girlfriend of two years would steal from him was too painful. He decided he would ask her about it. After dressing up, he took the wallet from his pants, phone, and charger, ready to leave the bedroom.
He then opened the wallet as though he was checking to see if everything he needed for the day was there. Alicia was coming out of the bathroom when she heard him mumble.
“I could have sworn I put money inside the wallet.”
“Babe, what’s wrong?” Alicia asked.
“I can’t find some money I withdraw yesterday,” James responded.
“Are you sure you didn’t put it elsewhere?”
“I’m very sure I put it in my wallet because I only took out two thousand shillings to buy the gin.”
“I’m sure it will show up,” said Alicia as she left the room. She was struggling to maintain eye contact.
James stayed behind in the bedroom, wondering how to proceed. As he sat on the bed, it dawned on him that Alicia had stolen the money for a wig, and he suddenly tasted disgust. He stormed out of the bedroom.
“How long were you going to pretend that you didn’t take the money?” James asked her.
“James! How dare you accuse me?”
“Drop the act. I saw everything. A wig was that important to you?”
“Babe, I’m sorry. You were being stingy.”
“Stingy? Alicia, how many times do I need to tell you that the business is struggling? How does that even justify you stealing from me?”
Before Alicia could say anything, James asked her to pack her things.
“You can keep the five thousand but I want you to pack everything your things and leave my house.”
“Babe, it’s so early in the morning.”
“I can’t leave you here; I don’t what else you’ll steal. Hurry up; I need to go to work. I will also need my key back.”
While he knew Alicia was unhappy with his financial situation, he didn’t expect that turn of events. He already had trouble at work and wouldn’t tolerate the same in his love life. Alicia showed up at his doorstep several times, so he changed the locks and asked the gateman not to let her through in the future.
