Moving out is an expensive venture no matter how hard you try to cut costs. Additionally, there are some costs that are easily overlooked and you don’t account for. However, it’s easier when you plan adequately and stick to your budget. The first step before moving out is to do your research and make a comprehensive budget. There are unavoidable expenses that you should consider so that you can have an idea of how much you will need. Here are some expenses you should consider before moving out.

Transportation

One of the most overlooked expenses when moving is transportation. Most people under budget only to be hit by a huge bill on the day of moving. To avoid any surprises, try to find a mover within your budget. You can inquire from your friends and even negotiate for a discount. Another hack to save costs when moving is to sell all your bulky items and then rebuy second-hand things at the new place. Professional movers are more expensive but you’re guaranteed to have a smooth moving experience. In case you use professional movers, look for ones who have offers so that you can save on costs. However, you should be ready to pay a pretty penny for such services.

Rent And Deposit

This one is pretty obvious but it’s also one of the most expensive expenses when moving out. Therefore, it’s important to put it into consideration. Most apartments ask for one month’s deposit. However, you shouldn’t assume this since others ask for two months deposit. Make sure you get clarity on how much you should pay as a deposit so that you can make a comprehensive budget. You should also be prepared to use up a significant amount of your savings when paying the rent and deposit.

Utility Deposit

You should also ask whether the new apartment charges a utility deposit. These include garbage, water and electricity deposits. Though they are usually affordable compared to other expenses, if you don’t include them in your budget, you will have to use money outside of your budget. Additionally, you should budget for monthly electric, garbage and water bills when you move out.

Groceries & Kitchen Utensils

Groceries expenses can pile up really quickly which most people don’t account for. When moving out, make sure you have a solid budget for your groceries shopping. Additionally, if you’re moving out for the first time, you need to invest in kitchen utensils. On average, a one-person household can spend up to Ksh 10,000 on groceries per month.

Furniture

Whether you’re moving out of your parents’ house or moving from an old apartment, you may need to be new furniture. After all, you’re moving to a new place and you need new things to match the vibe of the house. Break down what you need and research how much it will cost. If you’re on a tight budget, you can start with the basics such as a bed, couch and table. If you already have these, you can buy something you always wanted such as an office desk, a nice TV stand or an ottoman. Common Mistakes People Make When Buying Furniture

Appliances

You may also need some appliances when you’re moving out depending on whether you’re moving out for the first time or from an old apartment. For new movers, you will need a cooker, kettle, fridge and microwave. If you’re moving out from a different apartment, try to buy appliances that you don’t have.
