Moving gives you an opportunity to declutter and perhaps even gift someone else the things you no longer use. Here are some things you should consider getting rid of when moving.
Old or unwanted clothes
For a variety of reasons, you may no longer want certain articles of clothing. Maybe the clothes no longer fit, maybe you’re no longer a fan of that fashion and maybe you just no longer want those clothes. This should also include shoes, toys, bags, baby clothes, and everything else you no longer wear including jewellery and accessories. Clean the shoes and clothes and find a place to donate them.
Unused appliances
There’s no point in carrying over appliances you no longer use whether because they’re old or outdated or you’ve just had them replaced with something else. You can donate electronics that no longer work to organizations that deal with electrical clutter. For what still works well but you have alternatives, consider donating it to someone you know or an organization you think could benefit from it.
Old and unread books
Pass along any books you’ve already read and don’t intend to read again as well as any books you don’t think you’ll get around to reading. If you can’t find anyone in your circles to give the books to, consider donating to local community libraries or schools. Other things to get rid of from your office include old magazines, notebooks, calendars and planners, old pens and markers, and other little things like paperclips, sticky notes, erasers et cetera.
Old or damaged furniture
You know what furniture you no longer use. You can sell or donate it freeing yourself from the burden of moving heavy furniture that you no longer use. You should definitely consider places that reclaim wood from old furniture.
Kitchen stuff
Your kitchen is likely full of things you never get around to using, things you have not seen in maybe years. Look out for overused cutting boards that are due for an update, old mugs and utensils, and damaged pots and pans.
Unwanted media
Who among us does not have a collection of CDs, DVDs, video games, cassettes, radios, televisions, and other pieces of media just collecting dust in some corner of their house? No one among us can cast that first stone. There are businesses and people that will buy these old media to repurpose them, you only need to look around.
Old medicine and make-up
Go through your medicine cabinet and throw out any old medicine, focusing on the ones with a clear expiry date that is long past. You are also likely to bump into old make-up you no longer knew you had. Get rid of it. Make-up collects bacteria and can start to go bad.
Food
Eat everything you have before the move. Moving with food and drinks can be messy. Take stock of what you have in advance so that you can eat it all before the move.
A good rule of thumb is to get rid of anything you didn’t realize you still had.
