Condoms really are the best. They are affordable and convenient, not to mention a great form of birth control and protection from sexually transmitted infections. As easy as they are to use, mistakes can still be made. Here are the most common errors and mistakes people make when using male prophylactics.

Expiration date: Condoms have an expiration date, and using a condom that is past this date can reduce its effectiveness. It is important to check the expiration date on the condom packaging before use.

Poor storage: Condoms should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight or heat. Exposure to heat or sunlight can weaken the condom’s integrity and reduce its effectiveness.

Inconsistency: To be effective, condoms should be used every single time you have sex. Consistency is the key to protecting yourself and your partners. It is also important to use a new condom each time you have sex, as reuse can increase the risk of breakage or failure.

Not examining for damage: It is important to check the condom for any signs of damage before use. A condom that is torn, dried out, or discoloured may not be effective in preventing pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Not using enough lubricant: Using a water-based lubricant can help reduce friction and increase condom effectiveness. However, it is important not to use an oil-based lubricant, as it can weaken the condom and increase the risk of breakage. Relationships: Benefits Of Using Lube While Having Sex

Using a condom with substances that can weaken it: Some substances, such as creams or ointments, as well as substances like oil or lotion, can weaken condoms and increase the risk of breakage. It is important to avoid using condoms with these substances or to use an alternative form of protection. Sex: Household Items That You Can Use As Lube (And Those To Avoid)

Ignoring instructions: It is important to follow the instructions for using a condom, including opening the package carefully to avoid tearing the condom, placing the condom on the penis before any genital contact, and leaving space at the tip to collect semen.

Size matters: Using a condom that is too large or small can increase the risk of slippage or breakage. It is important to choose a condom that fits properly. If a condom feels too tight or too loose, try a different size or brand.

Not using a condom from the start to the finish: It is important to use a condom from start to finish every time you have sex. This means applying the condom before any genital contact and keeping it on until after sex is finished.

Relying on condoms as your only form of birth control: Condoms are an effective way to reduce the risk of pregnancy and STIs, but they are not foolproof. It is important to use condoms consistently and correctly, but you may also want to consider using another form of birth control, such as the pill or an IUD, to provide additional protection.
