Vajacials, a word coined from combining facials and vagina, is a treatment for women looking to improve the look and feel of their lady parts. Apart from removing ingrown hairs to give you a smooth exterior, some spas offer a hybrid vajacial treatment that promises to make tighten and enhance the smell of the vagina. These treatments are fairly safe but since they involve a sensitive area of the body, there are risks involved. Here are some risks you should know before getting a vajacial. Skincare: How To Do A DIY Vajacial At Home

  1. Can Cause Inflammation

One of the main procedures in a vajacial is skin lightening. This is done to even out discolouration which is common in this area of the body. However, the skin on the vulva is not as strong as the rest of your body. It’s prone to irritation especially if you use harsh products such as lightening creams. This irritation and inflammation can cause further discolouration and increase your risk of getting an infection. Foods That Fight Inflammation

  1. Can Cause Infections

Inflammation and irritation can lead to infections. Additionally, like with many treatments, if the spa fails to take the necessary health precautions, you could get infected. Vajacials use tools to exfoliate and cleanse the skin which should be cleaned and sterilized before a treatment. However, it’s hard to know the hygienic conditions of a spa. Even when a spa abides by all the hygiene practices, a vajacial still leaves you prone to an infection due to the procedure involved.

  1. Can Cause Hormonal Imbalance

Some beauticians are not trained in the science behind the vulva and hormonal changes. For instance, the vulva thins as you get older and approach menopause. Beauticians who are not aware of this can cause damage to such women. It’s necessary to do your research, go to a reputable spa and ask the beautician about their knowledge and experience level. 10 Signs And Symptoms For Hormonal Imbalance In Women

  1.  Can Cause Odour

Women get vajacials to rejuvenate their lady parts. This includes getting rid of bad odours through steaming with water infused with essential oils, rose petals and herbs. However, these treatments can throw off your pH balance leaving you prone to infections that can cause bad odours. It’s best to avoid steaming with essential oils or herbs altogether. Experts suggest that cleaning your vulva area with plain water is enough to clean it and keep bad odours away.

  1. Can Cause Bruising And Bleeding

As mentioned, the skin around the vulva is thin and sensitive. It becomes more sensitive as you age. Since vajacials involve scrubbing and exfoliating, there’s a chance that you can actually get bruised especially if you get the treatment from an inexperienced beautician. Steaming can also result in burns due to the high water temperatures. Make sure you speak out if you experience pain or discomfort to avoid injury.

  1. Can Kill The Good Bacteria

The vagina contains a community of good bacteria that thrive under certain conditions. These bacteria keep your vagina healthy, prevent sexually transmitted diseases and prevent preterm labour. Just like douching, a vajacial can get rid of good bacteria since it disrupts the usual conditions in your vagina. The risk increases if you get a vajacial regularly. Experts advise that vajacials should only be done 2 to 4 times a year.
