Skincare has become a necessity over the past few years with new trends emerging every so often. Due to the extreme lengths, people are willing to go in the name of beauty, new skincare trends promise to do the impossible. This has led many people to blindly follow skincare trends that at times, do more harm than good. Most skincare trends are harmless but experts warn that trying every trend without consulting a professional could damage your skin. Additionally, there are skincare trends that you should stay away from completely. Here are some.

  1. Using Apple Cider Vinegar To Treat Acne Breakouts

Let’s face it, skincare products can be expensive so we look for the next best thing in our households. There are countless home remedies used to treat skin problems. Some work like magic while others do more damage. Recently, apple cider vinegar has gone from being a basic seasoning to being a miracle skincare remedy. Many online beauty gurus swear by this remedy especially for treating acne but experts have shut this theory down. Apple cider vinegar is highly acidic which can be dangerous to your skin especially if you have sensitive, acne-prone skin. Apple Cider Vinegar: My Review After Using It And Why You May Need To Rethink Some Of Its Benefits

  1. Using Essential Oils Instead Of Sunscreen

You may have come across posts on social media about how essential oils are better than sunscreen in protecting your skin against UV rays. While essential oils offer SPF levels, research has found that sunscreen can offer higher SPF levels. Most essential oils have SPF levels between 1 to 8 compared to sunscreen which can have levels as high as 100. So, it’s essential to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful effect of sun exposure. The Benefits Of Sunscreen And How To Apply It Properly

  1. DIY Skincare Treatments

There’s almost every tutorial you could need on social media, especially on TikTok. The app has become the go-to for professionals to share short videos on their expertise. However, this has also led to a lot of false information that is not only misleading but also harmful. Dermatologists have noted that a lot of TikTok skincare hacks and fads are ineffective and dangerous. Some of the most dangerous trends are DIY skincare treatments such as DIY micro needling and at-home mole removal.

  1. Slugging

Slugging is a K-Beauty trend that involves coating your skin in a thick layer of petroleum-based products before bed to prevent water loss and keep your skin softer. This skincare trend emerged due to the rise of “glass skin” as a beauty standard. Slugging is not necessarily dangerous but it’s not perfect either. Applying petroleum-based products on oily skin can lead to enlarged pores, redness, and shinier skin. So, it’s best to avoid the trend altogether. Instead, you should use a night cream that is suitable for your skin type.

  1. Skin Icing

Applying a cold compress to your skin is nothing new. It has been used to reduce inflammation, redness, and puffiness. However, skin icing is an extreme version that experts warn can be harmful to your skin. Applying ice directly to your skin can not only cause injury but also it can worsen your current skin problem for people with sensitive skin. Icing widens the blood vessels and increases blood flow which can cause redness and irritation. Stick to a cold compress or a cooling face mask.

  1. Clean Products Are Better

The latest trend in the beauty world is using clean products. With the rise of environmental consciousness, many corporates are switching to cleaner products that contain fewer chemicals to cater to their customers. This is a great step in environmental conservation. However, there are no regulations for such products which has led to many low-quality products coming into the market. At the end of the day, these so-called “natural” products are no better than traditional high-quality products.
