It was going to be a big day for Charles. He was entering the fifth floor and had every reason to celebrate. He had done quite well for himself. He had a picture-perfect family, a beautiful, doting wife, and three kids, with the eldest daughter being in college and the other two in high school. Charles had established successful businesses and had a colourful social life with many successful friends. All things considered, he had every reason to celebrate his 50th birthday.

Charles’ wife, the ever gracious host, planned quite the party. The decor and the catering were not left to chance. The invitees’ list included many of the people Charles interacted with, including his top clients. There was a family-friendly celebration during the day, and people retreated into different groups in the evening. The women joined Charles’ wife and bonded over various activities while Charles and his boys decided it was time to take this celebration out of town.

“Charles, the fifth floor! This one is huge, we have to go all out,” said Peter enthusiastically.

Going all out was well understood among his bunch of friends.

“Darling, we’re going to head out you know, celebrate as men,” Charles said as he kissed his wife’s cheek and thanked the female guests for coming.

Off the boys went. Like many men in Nairobi, going all out meant a party in a more private location, good liquor, and younger girls. The kind of girls who understand the phrase ‘come with your friends.’

In Nairobi, Peter’s sugar baby, Ida,  has just gotten the text.

“Suzzy, there’s the plot. Remember Peter, my mubaba, he’s told me they’re having a party in Vasha,” Ida texted her friend.

“Great! Have you called Brenda and Aisha?” Suzzy responded.

“Yes, they’re dressing up. Let’s meet at my place in an hour and get our Uber from there,” Ida texted back.

An hour later, the girls were all dolled up and en route to “Vasha.” Their excitement was palpable. Ida had raved about Peter, her sponsor, for a couple of months. Since she started going out with him, there was an evident change in her lifestyle. Although her parents provided what many would consider a comfortable life for a campus student, she now had more money to spend on clothes and go to high-end joints. Her social media was a testament to the financial value Peter added to her life.

Her girls, Suzzy, Brenda, and Aisha, cheered her on and wanted in on this lifestyle because, after all, the younger broke guys would just break their hearts. At least with older guys, the nature of the relationship was clear, with seemingly better benefits. The day had finally come, Ida was bringing the girls to meet Peter and his friends, and perhaps one of them would get a sponsor as well.

Meanwhile, Peter and his three friends ensured Charles was having a good time. They also had some business to talk about before the young girls arrived. By the time they were done, the girls had arrived.

“Hey, we’re here, the Uber guy is waiting for his payment,” Ida told Peter.

Peter excused himself to pick up the girls as he handled the bill. He directed the girls towards the house’s entrance as he spoke to the taxi guy.

Charles and the other guys were eager to see who was joining them for the night. As they waited, Charles got a call, so he excused himself to pick it up in a quiet place.

Peter joined the team and enthusiastically introduced Ida as he showed her off to his boys. Everyone introduced themselves, and the girls got served drinks. Charles rejoined the party after his phone call.

“Aah and finally, here is the birthday boy,” Peter loudly announced as Charles walked into the room.

The girls looked in his direction, and that was when their eyes met.

Unable to utter a word, Suzzy dropped her glass in shock. Charles stood frozen with a dreadful look on his face.

“What’s the matter, Charles?” Peter asked.

Suzzy ran to the nearest exit as Ida followed her in confusion.

“What’s wrong babe?” Ida asked Suzzy.

“That’s my dad.”

Charles was in the other room explaining the situation to Peter. They quickly looked for alternative accommodation for the girls because it was too late for them to return to Nairobi. It went without saying that Suzzy and Charles would never speak of this again.

The night had definitely taken another turn. What was meant to be a night of fun for Charles as he marked a milestone in life would have ended up in an abomination. As they headed back to Nairobi the following day, the previous night’s events lingered with a spirit of introspection engulfing them the whole journey.
