Taking care of your skin is not only an act of self-love but also a necessity. Among the essential products in your skincare routine, face oils should be a priority. Face oils are considered a type of emollient, which means they help strengthen the outer layer of your skin, the stratum corneum, by softening and sealing it, thereby preventing water loss.

Some examples of facial oils are rosehip oil, camellia oil, squalene oil, coconut oil, almond oil, aloe vera oil, jojoba oil, and CBD oil. It is important to note that facial oils are not moisturizers but complements of moisturizers. They can’t pull moisture in from the outside environment, and therefore cannot actually hydrate the skin. They can, however, be considered a good sealant (an ‘occlusive’) for the skin, helping to form a protective layer.

Here are some of the benefits of face oils, and why you should add them to your routine.

1. Protect the skin

The skin is exposed to many elements as we go about our day. We must find ways to protect it. Face oils can help with that. Because oils are lipophilic, they can penetrate deep into the skin, trapping water and other moisturizing goodness in, while keeping toxins and other bad stuff out. This is important for big-city dwellers who need extra protection against pollutants and smog, a known source of unwanted wrinkles.

2. They seal in moisture

If you battle with skin dryness or flakiness, then you should definitely consider adding face oils to your skincare routine. When you apply oil on your face after your moisturizer, it seals in the hydrating ingredients, making your skin more likely to hold onto that added hydration. Beyond helping to seal in hydration, the best face oils can provide nourishment of their own, as well. 6 Benefits Of Incorporating A Moisturizer Into Your Skincare Routine

3. Regulate the production of sebum

Here is some good news for those with acne-prone skin. While it may seem counter-productive to use more oil on the skin with over-active sebaceous (or oil) glands, face oils can actually help regulate sebum production. Face oils can fool our bodies into producing less oil, meaning less chance of breakouts. Some facial oils like Aloe Vera and Jojoba oil help your skin produce less pore-clogging sebum. These facial oils contain ingredients that can kill acne-causing bacteria and help slough off dead skin cells. Beauty: How To Take Care Of Acne Prone Skin

4. Make enlarged pores look smaller

Pores serve an important function. They allow sweat and oil to escape through your skin, cooling you off and keeping your skin healthy while getting rid of toxins. However, enlarged pores can indicate clogging and/or oil and bacteria buildup. Face oils can help you make those enlarged pores look smaller. Oils such as macadamia, jojoba, and camellia actually pull out grime and fats from pores, making them appear smaller and less noticeable.

5. Cleanse the skin

It’s hard to imagine that oil can actually work as a cleanser. Face oils can work that magic. Remember that oils are innately hydrating. After applying your cleansing oil to the skin, massage it over your complexion (including the eye area if you’re wearing makeup). Then, add water to emulsify the formula and create a lather. Wash your face like you normally would, and rinse off with lukewarm water. Beauty: 6 Benefits Of Using Cleansers

6. Reduce wrinkles

Nobody wants to wake up one day and realize that they have wrinkles because of not taking care of their skin. Wrinkles can make you look older than your actual age. The good news? Face oils can help you with that. Some facial oils like Vitamin E oil and Argan oil are packed with antioxidants, which prevent further ageing. Beauty: Why You Need Vitamin E In Your Skincare Routine

7. They can be used as a primer for makeup

Primer is an essential part of any makeup routine. It helps to create the perfect base by creating a barrier between your skin and foundation. It smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles, open pores, dry patches, uneven skin tone, and spots. Face oils can be primers for makeup. How does this work? Oils like mandarin and pumpkin seed zip through the top of the skin at a lightning-quick speed, quickly settling comfortably into the areas that need hydrating the most. This gives an immediate plumping effect and creates the perfect canvas for your makeup. Here are 7 Foundation Hacks You Should Know
