Imagine having a day at work where you spend most of your time on your feet. Moving around, delivering documents, attending meetings and then when it’s time to go home you get to the bus stop and there is a long line to get into the matatu. You stand there tired and weary, and your feet are aching. You get a bus home but then you have to walk all the way to the house. Worst case scenario, you have to go up a few flights of stairs. What a rosy day.

There are a few ways you can make it up to your feet.

Create a home foot spa. Depending on how tired you are, you can create a spa at home. Heat some water and put it in a basin, it should be high enough to fully cover your ankles Add salt or rosemary or essential oils and if you are feeling creative you can sprinkle some flower petals into the water. Sit down and let your feet soak for an hour or so. You might also want to consider getting a foot massager.

Stretch. The pain in your feet is mostly caused by a lack of proper circulation. Stretching will help to get the blood flowing better. Stretch your feet as much as you can, don’t strain yourself too much, and calf raises help the blood flow. The most advisable time to stretch is after you have finished soaking your feet, at this point, your feet are more relaxed and it will be easier to stretch out the tightness.

Rub oil on your legs or simply moisturize them. As you massage the oil or moisturizer to your feet, you assist stimulate circulation through your feet. Rub them for a while, ensuring you touch all areas of your leg. Move the moisturizer horizontally, vertically and in a circular motion. It also soothes the muscles, thus reducing pain and fatigue. Moisturizing will help hydrate your feet making them supple.

Massage your feet. There are simple exercises which are more of massages in the long run. Pain and fatigue in your feet may be due to the shoes you were wearing during the day. Some shoes hurt your toes, place a tennis ball on the floor and roll your feet on top of it. Press hard, as hard as you can without hurting yourself. This will boost circulation throughout your legs to encourage more blood flow. That helps to improve comfort and function in the lower body.

Put some menthol on your feet.  Sometimes all your feet need is a break. When you get to the house, you can apply a menthol gel to your feet uniformly. The gel relaxes and cools your feet. Menthol gels, however, make you more vulnerable to the breeze and your legs might get cold.  Find a pair of socks that you don’t mind staining and wear them. Then put on comfortable slippers. You can leave the socks on throughout the night.
