We’ve all had those nights where we get home exhausted and fatigued, and the thought of going through the makeup removal process seems like too much. This particularly happens after a night out. You’re super tired and the only thing you want to do is sleep, so you hop into bed with a ton of makeup on your face. Aside from it making your pillows and sheets dirty and giving you extra work, sleeping with makeup on is extremely harmful to the skin.

Here’s how.

  1. Makeup clogs your pores

You might go to bed with makeup on with the consolation that it’s a once in a while kind of thing. However, makeup can clog your pores, making it harder for them to absorb moisture and nutrients. In the long run, this can make your skin bumpy and lead to breakouts that are a whole other process to get rid of.

Doctor Eric Schweiger, a certified dermatologist says that free radicals from the environment (often in the form of pollution) remain on the skin when you do not clean your face properly at night. Free radicals cause collagen breakdown over time, which results in the development of fine lines and prematurely aged skin.

Skincare: 6 Things You Must Do When Removing Your Makeup

  1. It can lead to acne

There are instances where people develop acne ‘out of nowhere’ and they start to wonder why. All your life you’ve had perfect skin and then suddenly you start to develop it. Perhaps the reason behind it is the way you take off your makeup. If you already have acne, you make it worse by not taking off your makeup properly, because any product that remains on the face overnight will hinder your skin from breathing and therefore you start to develop acne.

Skin is covered in pores which allows us to sweat and secrete sebum, a natural lubricant that moisturizes skin and removes dead skin cells and other irritants from our pores. According to Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer when you apply makeup, you block your pores from releasing sebum, which may lead to visibly larger pores and acne over time. Sleeping with makeup attracts microcomedone which attracts acne-causing bacteria to your skin. How To Take Care Of Acne Prone Skin

  1. Premature ageing

Sleeping with makeup makes your skin appear dull and leads to the formation of wrinkles. The Daily Mail conducted an experiment where a woman didn’t wash her face for a good 30 days. She would wake up and simply apply more makeup every single day. So it’s like each day she was forming another barrier and making it harder for her skin to breathe. The final result was that her skin had aged by 10 years.

I’m sure you have met people who wear heavy makeup daily, and when they don’t their skin looks dry and dull. This is also a result of not allowing your pores to breathe and sweat and secrete sebum. All these processes are essential and to allow them to happen, you must make sure that you take off your makeup every single day before going to bed.

  1. You interfere with the reparatory and cell regeneration process of the skin

So many people are battling with one skin condition or the other. By sleeping with makeup on, you are slowing down the process of your skin condition being restored to your desired face. Our skin regenerates itself when we are asleep. This is what makes it important to take your makeup off at night because it allows your pores to release sebum that rehydrates and protects your skin from free radicals in the air. Leaving your makeup on disrupts these critical processes, worsening skin conditions and slowing down the process of the skin repairing itself. Most makeup chemicals are toxic which creates the need to get rid of them before going to bed.

  1. Your eyes are affected

The eyes are very sensitive, which is why it is necessary to take off your makeup and especially within the eye area. Mascara, eye shadow, eye pencil and any other makeup used around the eye area needs to be taken off to avoid conditions such as styes and other eye infections. Remember that eyelashes play an important role in the functioning of the eye. They prevent dust and other unwanted particles from getting into the eye. When you don’t take off your makeup at night, it triggers our immune response to kick in to fight off a possible infection. On top of this, failure to take off your mascara makes your lashes dry and brittle and the result is that they fall off. 7 Ways To Care For Your Eyes

  1. Chapped lips

Your eyes and skin are not the only ones that will suffer when you don’t take your makeup off properly. Your lips are likely to dry out and become chapped as well. This is most definitely not a good look. It’s untidy and makes you look as though you aren’t well-groomed. Therefore you might want to get rid of all the lipstick or lip gloss before going to bed, lest you suffer from these consequences. Beauty: How To Keep Your Lips Looking Luscious
