She was seated on the balcony with the sun’s rays hitting her face. Her face was radiant and peaceful as she enjoyed the sunset and a glass of red wine. He watched her for a while before finally deciding to make a move. It felt wrong to disturb her peace. He yearned for that kind of peace.
As he looked at her he wondered about her. From her hair and nails, he could tell she liked to keep her fashion simple but not basic. It didn’t look like she had any troubles in the world but at his age he knew that couldn’t be true. Was she one of those yoga girls who had mastered the art of savouring the moment? The more he looked at her the more he was intrigued.
A sudden change in the weather forced the girl on the balcony to seek shelter inside. He seized the opportunity by moving his hand, signalling to her that she could join him at his table. She obliged.
“As unpredictable as the weather, huh?” Said the gentleman.
“Isn’t it ironic that we say that and then proceed to have government departments predicting it?” Said the lady.
“So those are the kind of thoughts housed behind that peaceful face,” said the gentleman with a smile.
“Sorry, what?” Asked the lady. She looked puzzled.
“I don’t know if you’ve been told this before but I have never seen an adult look as peaceful as you did on that balcony. And no, I’m not a creepy old guy. I’m Joe,” said the gentleman.
“With life, there’s always something, so you’ve got to find pockets of peace. This is my peaceful spot,” said the lady with a smile as she introduced herself to him as Daisy.
The more they talked, the more Joe wanted to know her more. Before they knew it, they had been talking for over three hours. The restaurant section was closing so they had to leave. The waiter told them about their bar upstairs where they could move to if they wanted to stay longer.
“I’m sorry, I’m growing too old for that kind of noise but I would like to share a meal with you again,” Joe told Daisy.
“I think I would like that too,” said Daisy.
They met again a week later. The conversation was as good as the last time but they dug deeper. Joe wasn’t one to beat around the bush.
“You can tell I’m an older guy and I’m not looking to play games with you. I’m married with three children. I am not happy in my marriage but I’m not leaving my wife. I’m also not interested in mere friendship, I’m pursuing you,” said Joe.
“I figured as much. I’m not looking for drama. Keep your wife’s affairs on your end and mine on this end,” said Daisy.
She had spent the past week thinking about that moment. Joe’s marriage didn’t come as a surprise due to his age. From their first conversation, it was obvious he was looking for happiness and peace. Daisy was tired of dating her age mates and she enjoyed listening to Joe’s takes on life. Once she rationalized that it was Joe breaking his wedding vows, she was willing to give it a shot.
That began an intense relationship between Daisy and Joe. Her attention to detail intrigued Joe. He was on a special diet and regular medication because of health issues. Daisy would prepare meals that fit his diet whenever he came over to her place. She even tried mixing up recipes with the items he was allowed to eat.
When Joe found the meal, he was quick to remind her that he was on a diet but to his surprise, she named each ingredient used in the meal.
“Are you having the same dish?” Joe asked her.
“Worried I might be drugging you?” Daisy asked jokingly.
“Did you learn of my buried treasure?” Joe joked.
“Dang it! You saw through me,” said Daisy.
“No, for real. You don’t have to eat my bland diet,” said Joe.
“Ouch! I poured my heart into making that meal,” said Daisy with a smile.
“I love it but you know what I mean,” said Joe.
“I do. I saw my late dad struggle with changing his lifestyle once he got a terminal diagnosis and I also saw how much easier it was when we all joined him on the journey,” explained Daisy.
Joe fell harder for her with each action of kindness. Daisy got him a pill tracker that made it easier for him to manage his condition. The cooking experiments also made him regain his love for food. Daisy also loved shopping and she would help him get cool stuff for his kids.
With time, Joe threw caution to the wind and would suggest meeting in places near his home. Daisy would quickly remind him that she wasn’t looking to stir up drama with his wife. She would never text him anything incriminating and insisted on deleting call logs. She’d also not call him past certain hours if he was at home.
“Are you sure you haven’t done this before?” Joe asked Daisy.
“I guess they were right about women being better cheaters,” said Daisy.
“What if I told you I don’t want to keep hiding you?” Asked Joe.
“I would say that introduces drama and complications that I don’t want,” said Daisy.
“At this point, I lean on you for so much, even work-related matters. I feel I should give you a respectful position and make you my wife too. You deserve more than being a mistress,” said Joe.
“I get how you think that would give me more respect but it would also open me up to public ridicule and judgement. It’s not a battle I want to take up. Our arrangement works for me,” said Daisy.
That discussion triggered conflict in their relationship. Each party stood their ground. Their meetings stopped being a source of peace and happiness. Daisy ended the relationship when Joe couldn’t understand her point of view.
