Dating when you’re self conscious about your looks can be a nightmare. It’s hard to be confident since you’re constantly thinking about your appearance and you’re not sure whether your date has noticed your insecurities. It’s worse when you go out with someone who is significantly more attractive than you. However, the worst is when they think they’re out of your league.
I’m fairly attractive by most people’s standards but I work in an industry that makes me feel like an ugly duckling. I work as an operations manager at a beauty spa. Everyone who either works there or comes for a service is beautiful which has made me insecure about my looks.
Earlier this year, I joined a gym because my workmates told me it would help with my self esteem. It was at this gym where I met the most self-centered man I’ve ever gone on a date with.
I was fairly new and wanted to make some friends. Charles talked to everyone so I figured he would be a good friend.
“Hi, I’m Linda.” I introduced myself to him.
“I’m Charles.” He replied with a smile.
He was very attractive. His body was perfectly sculpted, his beard was clean, and his locs were neat. Everything seemed to check out.
We talked for a few minutes before resuming our workout. He finished his session before me but waited for me. After I was done, he walked me to my car where we talked a bit more.
“So, why did you decide to start working out?” He asked.
“My workmates. They’re all in perfect shape then there’s me.” I said.
“Don’t say that about yourself. You’re fine.”
“Thanks but I can do better. I mean, look at you. You look amazing.”
I kept praising him but he didn’t seem to feel like he was out of my league at that moment. He just kept encouraging me to stick to my workout plan and I would see results.
A few weeks after we met, we planned a date. It was actually very random. We both talked about a certain restaurant that we wanted to try and ended up arranging a date.
It wasn’t a big deal but it was an opportunity for me to make a good impression on him and show Charles how I looked outside the gym.
I felt a bit intimidated just as I did with my coworkers. However, I had gained a bit of confidence and didn’t care whether he was out of my league or not. The most important thing was that we got along.
A wore a white bodycon dress that admittedly didn’t do justice to my frame. It showed every back roll and cellulite. Nonetheless, it looked good.
“I didn’t know what to expect when you walked in.” He said
“How do I look?”
“You could do better.”
I didn’t take his comment personally. I’m always open to constructive criticism and I appreciate people who tell me the truth so I can improve.
However, the rest of the evening was quite awkward. Charles suddenly became snobbish. He gave me one-word answers and at times, he didn’t even answer. I had to repeat myself so I could get an answer. It was safe to say that the date was a disaster but I didn’t know why.
He seemed excited about it the previous day when we were making plans so I didn’t understand the sudden change in attitude.
The date ended early and we both went our seperate ways. I ended up meeting a friend for drinks before going back. It was good that I met her because I would have been too insecure to face Charles the next day.
“Is it the way I look?” I asked her.
“You look amazing. I was about to ask where you bought that dress from.”
“Then what is it?”
“Maybe he had his own issues. You know these pretty boys are moody like us.”
“Maybe you’re right. I’ll try not to overthink it until I get answers from him tomorrow.”
The following day, I made my way to the gym and started my workout. Charles came shortly after. However, he didn’t start working out immediately. He chatted with one of the trainers and I could see them chuckling while looking at me.
I tried to focus on my workout but they didn’t stop looking at me and laughing. Finally, I had enough and went to confront Charles. Everyone dispersed as soon as I approached him which confirmed that they were talking about me.
“What’s going on?”
“What do you mean?”
“You’ve been acting strange since our date last night.”
“It’s nothing.”
Since I wasn’t going to get answers from Charles, I decided to ask one of the trainers that he was talking to.
“What were you and Charles talking about?”
“Nothing much. He was just telling me about his life lately.”
“Did you talk about our date?”
“He mentioned it.”
“What did he say?”
The trained chuckled then shook his head.
“Nothing much.” He said.
“What’s so funny then?”
“He just mentioned that you weren’t in his league.”
I felt like someone had stabbed me in the heart. My head felt hot, my heart raced and I started feeling sweaty. However, I managed to compose myself and looked around the gym for Charles.
“Why did you say I’m not in your league?” I confronted him.
“You aren’t. Don’t get me wrong, you’re cute but you have a lot of work to do to be in my league.”
“Why did you go on a date with me then?”
“I go out on dates all the time. It was just another evening for me.”
I’ve never felt so low in life. I was in disbelief since Charles seemed like a nice person. I didn’t understand why he would put me down like that. Of course I knew that he was out of my league and there’s nothing wrong with being confident. In fact, most people prefer dating a confident person. However, he crossed the line when he told other people what he thought about me.
We never went on a second date nor did we speak to each other after that day. I even changed gyms just so I wouldn’t see him again.
