I appreciate a man who has a pet, especially a cat. It takes a special kind of man to love a cat over a dog for obvious reasons. Cats aren’t the easiest pets to love. They aren’t as affectionate as dogs and they can be hostile even towards their owners. Therefore, anyone who chooses to have a cat as a pet has to be a very patient person.
I met a guy earlier this year who absolutely adored his cat. I knew that even before we started dating, he had put his cat as his screensaver and profile picture. However, I didn’t expect that he would put his cat before me.
Jack was a new employee at the company where I work. Being part of the unofficial welcoming committee, I joined our HR and other employees in showing him around and introducing him to his colleagues. I noticed that he was reserved which only made me more interested in him.
Once things had settled down, I went over to his desk to introduce myself.
“Hi,” I said in a bubbly voice.
“Hi.” He answered then continued looking at his laptop.
“I’m Esther.”
“Yes, I know.”
“I thought you forgot.”
“How can I? You were the most talkative person in that group.”
I felt slightly embarrassed since I didn’t know whether I had made a bad impression on him.
“You don’t talk much,” I said, trying to change the subject.
“Yeah. I prefer being silent and observing.”
Things were a bit awkward at first as I tried to break through his shell. However, I finally found something that would spark a conversation between us. I noticed his wallpaper and knew it was the perfect conversation starter.
“Is that your cat?” I asked
He looked surprised then smiled and said, “Yes. His name is King.”
“Aww.” I said.
“Do you like cats?”
“Yeah. I like all pets.”
“That’s nice. King is my everything. I love that cat to death.”
I thought it was cute how he loved his cat. Every time we met, he would talk about his cat. As a pet lover, I understood him. However, he opened up about how his cat has actually cost him his relationships.
“Most people don’t understand how a grown man can love an animal like that. They usually compete with King for my affection and at the end of the day, I’ll always choose my cat.” He explained.
“I understand,” I said not knowing what I was about to get myself into.
We decided to start dating three months after we met. By that time I hadn’t been to his house or met his cat. However, I had high hopes for our relationship. There was no way I was going to let a cat get in between us.
We went on a few dates but always ended up going back to my place.
“King can be a bit territorial,” Jack explained after I finally confronted him about not taking me to his place.
“No problem. I know how I’ll win him over.”
The following weekend, Jack invited me to his place. We were having the time of our lives when suddenly, a huge cat emerged from the bedroom. He stood at the door, staring at me. I tried to call him but he didn’t move. He just gave me a deathly stare.
“I brought you some gifts,” I said as I removed the toys and showed them to the cat.
He didn’t look impressed. In fact, he went back to the bedroom.
“I think he doesn’t like me.”
“It’s not personal. He’s not very friendly.” Jack said.
Since I already knew that I wouldn’t be his best friend, I didn’t bother to win him over anymore. Every time I went to Jack’s place, I completely ignored him which seemed to work at first. He didn’t give me deathly stares and he would go about his business when I was around. At times, he would even come close to me.
I think I let my guard down too much and trusted the cat too early because he turned into a monster overnight. I’m not sure what I did to make him switch his attitude towards me but he no longer tolerated my presence in Jack’s house.
Anytime I came over, he would make so much noise to get Jack’s attention. We tried locking him in the bedroom but it didn’t help. He only made more noise and scratched the door.
Like before, I hoped it was a phase that would pass by. It wasn’t. King hated me and he made it known that he didn’t want me around.
“I’m really sorry about his behaviour but I did warn you,” Jack said.
“Well, he’s not getting rid of me that easily.”
“What will we do?”
“I think we should hang out at my place for now,” I suggested.
We tried to make things work but it was clear that Jack’s focus was on his cat even when we were together. He couldn’t stop worrying about him.
“What if something bad has happened to him?” He asked.
“He can take care of himself.”
“I know but what if he gets sick as I’m not there.”
I finally understood what he meant when he told me that his previous girlfriends were jealous of King. Of course, they were. Jack seemed like he loved his cat more than anything.
The final straw was when we went back to his place and King decided to let his feelings about me known. He must have felt like Jack was giving me too much attention and he wasn’t happy about it.
He relentlessly harassed me. I couldn’t move him to the house without him attacking my legs. He didn’t hurt me but he did scare me. King is a huge cat and when he attacks, it can look scary. When we woke up the following day, the top that I had worn the previous day was in tatters. King had shredded it during the night.
I decided to end the relationship before he did something similar to my face. Jack wasn’t surprised. He knew that the day would come sooner or later. We remained friends but I’ve never gone back to his house.
