When people ask what women want, I simply laugh because I was once in their shoes. I’ve come to learn that many women will tolerate and forgive anything as long as you have money. When I was broke, I couldn’t even cough in peace before the girl I was with started complaining. Now, I’m rich and let me tell you, women are the ones who hit on me.

Of course, I have to approach a girl I’m attracted to but they do all the work after that. When I was broke, things were very different. For starters, it was a challenge to even get a girl to give me her number.

There was one girl that I really liked in our estate. At that time, I was still living at home since I couldn’t afford to move out. I had seen her a few times around and finally I got the courage to approach her.

“Hi, you look so good.”

She looked at me for a few seconds then continued walking without saying anything.

“I’m George. Can I get your number?”

“I don’t have one.”

At that point, I knew she wasn’t interested but I refused to give up. I kept following her, trying to make conversation. We then passed a Ford Ranger parked on the side of the road. The driver came out and started talking to the girl. She smiled as soon as he greeted her and within a few seconds, she went in his car.

I just shook my head and went on with my business. However, that was the moment I realized that relationships are hard when you’re not rich. I didn’t give up on women though. That was impossible. I just changed my type while I hustled for money.

It was tough. For years, I dated women I didn’t like and even some of those women had certain standards that made me question my manhood. So, it really didn’t make a difference whether I was dating a 10 or a 2. As long as I wasn’t rich, they didn’t respect me.

My break came years after completing university and hustling in the city. I was working as a file clerk in an insurance company when the most beautiful girl I had ever seen joined as an intern. From the moment I saw her, I knew I would do anything to get her. She was the type that would make a man rob a bank just to buy her whatever she wanted.

I went to her desk during our lunch break to introduce myself.

“Hi,” I said to her.

“Hi.” She said and smiled.

I had a bit of an advantage since she didn’t know what I did yet. So, I needed to make an impression as soon as possible.

“Can I take you for lunch?” I asked.

“Sure. I was even wondering where people buy food around here.”

“There’s a nice cafeteria on the rooftop.”

“Okay. Let’s go.”

“I’m George, by the way.”

“I’m Lydia.”

“Nice to meet you. I have to tell you this. I hope you don’t mind. You’re very beautiful.”

“Oh, thanks.” She said, blushing.

“I stopped to look at you when you came in.”

“You’re funny.”

We had a great conversation over lunch and I was confident that I had made a good impression. However, it was only a matter of time before she found out what I did and that I wasn’t a rich man. Therefore, I decided to show her the real me as soon as possible.

Coincidentally, we lived on the same side of town so we boarded the same bus.

When we passed my place, I pointed towards it and said, “this is where I live.”

I saw her face change. She stared outside the window then looked at me. It was like she realized I wasn’t rich and she wasn’t impressed.

“Oh, good to know.” She finally answered.

“What about you?”

“I live ahead.”

“Oh, where the rich people live.”

“Not really.”

Surprisingly, she didn’t run for the hills after realizing I wasn’t rich. However, I used to spend nearly half my salary trying to impress and she still wanted more.

“My laptop is so old. Can you buy me a MacBook?”

“How much is it?”

“Ksh 150,000.”

“What? That’s not even close to my savings.”

“Okay, then give me Ksh 100,000. I can find one for that amount.”

“I’ll see what I can do.”

Obviously, I didn’t have that kind of money so I couldn’t give her. A few weeks later, she had a new MacBook. I tried to enquire where she got the money but she told me to mind my business.

I didn’t want to push her away so I bit my tongue but it hurt my ego as a man knowing that another man probably bought it for her. That was the moment I realized I needed to make money if I wanted a girl like Lydia all to myself.

I started applying to different companies and shortly after, I landed a well-paying job. By that time, Lydia had moved on to another man – one of the managers at my former workplace.

I, on the other hand, was single like a dollar bill but the money I was getting was pretty good. I stayed single for years as I worked tirelessly.

Eventually, I made enough to afford one of my dream cars – a Subaru Legacy. Once I achieved that goal, I shifted my focus on my love life. It had been struggling for a while and I needed a little excitement desperately.

My friends introduced me to the Nairobi night life which I thoroughly enjoyed. For once, girls were the ones hitting on me. Whichever girl I wanted, I got. It was a strange but good feeling.

“This is how life is when you’re rich.” One of my friends said.

“I should have become rich a long time ago then.”

Sure enough, getting girls was much easier when I got rich. I have several girls’ phone numbers who I simply call when I’m bored and they show up. How life has changed.
