Abigail had a long day at work and needed to unwind. Her phone rang. When she saw the caller ID, she felt as though it was a telepathic connection. It was the person she wanted to talk to after a trying day.
“Have you added clairvoyance to your superpowers?” Abigail asked.
“Your friendly neighbourhood witch reporting for duty,” joked the caller.
“Well, get your broom and find me at our usual spot,” said Abigail.
“That’s perfect because I have news for you.”
Abigail freshened up and went to the agreed spot in less than an hour. Her friend was already waiting for her. They held each other in a warm embrace.
“Girl, thank you. I needed that after the day I’ve had,” Abigail told her friend.
“Why? A rough day at work?” Asked the friend.
“We have auditors coming next week, so it’s been a crazy week of preparation,” said Abigail.
“Well, if you’re here now, then it means you have that covered,” the friend said reassuringly.
“True. It could be worse. How are you?” Abigail asked.
“I’m good, but you’d never guess who I bumped into,” said the friend.
“Who?” Abigail asked.
“David and his pregnant girlfriend or wife, I’m not sure which,” said the friend.
“David, my ex?” Abigail asked.
“Yep! That same one. They were shopping for strollers and other baby things,” replied the friend.
“He can now afford a stroller? He didn’t even want children,” said Abigail.
“That was my first thought. I don’t know, but he looks different,” she said.
“How?” Abigail asked.
“Like someone happy and content with life,” said the friend.
They enjoyed the rest of the evening, but that information affected Abigail. She had dated David for close to four years. David was smart and had a lot of potential, but things hadn’t worked out for him—or at least that’s what Abigail first thought. However, after a series of failed business ideas and some resignations, Abigail decided he lacked ambition.
To be fair, she had put her soul and everything into that relationship. Having a stable job also meant she handled many bills in the relationship. At some point, she housed him and gave him a loan to start one of his failed projects. They fought a lot.
Towards the end of their relationship, David’s lack of career and financial stability was one of the major causes of conflict. However, his lack of commitment to their future led to their breakup. Abigail wanted to settle down and start a family. She had dated David for a long time and felt it was time for the next step.
David felt unprepared for a bigger commitment. He didn’t want children then, which Abigail took to mean that he didn’t want kids at all. It had been a hard breakup for Abigail, especially because she felt she had invested heavily in the relationship.
At some point in the night, Abigail told her friend that she was hurt that David was having a child with someone else. It reminded her that she was still single after that breakup. Her friend consoled her, and they had a few more drinks before heading home. Each of them took a cab.
Abigail’s friend had hardly slept for two hours when her phone rang. The caller informed her that Abigail had been in a car accident and they’d found her number on Abigail’s call log. Abigail had been lucky enough that good Samaritans had taken her to hospital. She’d broken a couple of bones and had a long road to full recovery.
Word spread around, and many people went to visit her in hospital and later at her home when she was discharged. One of the visitors was David.
“Hey, I was worried when I heard the news. How are you doing?” David told Abigail.
“I’m okay, as okay as I can be given the circumstances,” Abigail said.
“I’m glad you came out alive,” David told Abigail.
“I hear you’re expecting a child,” said Abigail.
“I knew your friend would tell you about it,” said David.
“Was it supposed to be a secret?” Abigail asked.
“No, but things are just weird between us. I wasn’t even sure if I should come,” said David.
“Then why did you come?” Abigail asked.
“Because despite everything, I appreciate what you did for me,” said David.
“I thought you didn’t want children,” said Abigail.
“I wasn’t ready then,” said David.
“And you got ready in a year with someone else?” Abigail asked him.
“It’s not like that. You never saw me and didn’t believe in my dreams,” David explained.
“So it was my fault? What about all the projects and bills I paid for? ” Abigail asked in anger.
“Calm down, Abigail. See, this is why it wasn’t going to work out. You keep reminding me of my past failures and what you did for me. I know I messed up and have spent the past couple of months working on myself. Daisy sees me for who I am now, “ said David.
“So she gets the version of you I wanted? The version I’d hoped you’d become when I did everything for you?” Abigail asked David bitterly.
“Can you hear yourself? The version you created? Abigail, I wasn’t some sort of project you were working on, and your reward was a certain version of me. I truly appreciate everything you did for me, but I was never going to succeed with you throwing my past failures at me at every turn,” David told her.
The conversation didn’t go on for long since Abigail got emotional. David had to leave, but before he left, he sent her a substantial amount of money to pay some of her bills. Abigail’s friend came by a bit later, and Abigail told her what had happened.
“Do you think I was the problem? Did I make him feel bad about himself? Am I a bad person?” Abigail asked the friend.
“You were a person who had been disappointed by him repeatedly. It’s hard to expect different outcomes when you’ve been down a path several times. It was more like trauma,” said the friend.
“But he’s so happy and at peace with Daisy,” said Abigail.
“Who’s Daisy?” Asked the friend.
“The new girl,” said Abigail.
“Oh. Sadly, baby girl, she didn’t experience that version of David. She only knows this better version. You didn’t have that advantage,” said her friend.
“She really does have that advantage, huh? I’m hurt,” said Abigail.
“I know, but you’ll be okay. You’ll get your great person, too,” said the friend.
