When I graduated from campus, I was jobless and hopeless. I spent most of my days in the cyber cafe looking for jobs or wandering around the estate to kill time until I bumped into an old classmate. It was a regular day like any other. I went to the cyber cafe and started browsing through different job sites when Martin walked in with a woman who clearly looked like a sugar mummy.
They were holding hands and giggling as the attendant printed some documents for them. The woman then handed Martin Ksh 2,000 and kissed him on the cheek before leaving. Martin and the attendant chatted for a few minutes before he sat down and switched on the laptop he had come with.
I waited for a while before approaching him.
“Martin.” I said as I stood behind him.
He turned around, studied me for a few seconds then recognized me.
“Ah..” he said, looking puzzled.
“Dennis. We were in high school together.”
“Ooh… Of course. How are you?” He asked, looking at my worn-out clothes.
“Good. Things could be better though.”
“I feel you, bro.”
“Nah. You look like you’re doing good for yourself.” I said, trying to lighten the mood.
“I’m just trying.”
We chatted for a while before exchanging numbers and then parting ways.
I didn’t expect to hear from Martin but a few days later, I got a WhatsApp message from him inviting me to his place.
As usual, I had nothing to do so I went early in the morning.
“Welcome. These are my friends.” He said as he gestured to the group of young men around the living room.
I instantly noticed the coffee table that was littered with empty alcohol bottles and the strong smell coming from the house. Despite the mess, the house looked amazing.
He had a 75-inch Samsung TV hanging on the wall, an L-shape leather couch, a huge carpet that almost covered the entire room and decorations on the wall.
I stood by the door as I admired the house.
“Welcome. Have you eaten?” He asked.
“No,” I answered.
“There’s sausages, bread, eggs, milk… anything you want. Feel at home. If you want to order from outside just let me know.”
I didn’t wait to be told twice. I made my way to the kitchen, made myself a hearty breakfast and sat by the counter as I watched the others playing FIFA.
As the day progressed, the guys left one by one until I was left alone with Martin.
“I hope you’re enjoying yourself.” He said as he scrolled through YouTube.
“Yes,” I answered.
“I have some guests coming but you can stay.” He said.
Shortly after, his phone rang and he went running downstairs then returned carrying a box of pizza. The lady he had come with to the cyber cafe followed him behind with another woman.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that Martin was trying to set me up with a sugar mummy. I didn’t say anything but it was very uncomfortable. I couldn’t bear it anymore so I left.
Martin called me the following day and invited me to his place. As usual, the coffee table was littered with alcohol but at that time, it was just him and his sugar mummy.
As soon as I got in, he pulled me aside and explained his plan.
“Listen, you look like you need money. The woman who came here yesterday likes you and she can give you money.” He explained.
“You mean, she wants to be my sugar mummy?” I asked.
“Yeah. It’s not a big deal. Dating a sugar mummy is the trend nowadays.”
We went back to the living room. Martin sat next to his sugar mummy and I sat on the edge of the couch. I still felt uncomfortable but I tried to distract myself.
Gladys, the sugar mummy Martin set me up with, came by a few hours later. By that time, I was a bit tipsy and more relaxed. I was even joking and dancing with the other sugar mummy.
I shifted my attention to Gladys and I hit it off immediately. The more we talked, the more I convinced myself that dating a sugar mummy wasn’t so bad.
“Martin was doing it and look at him, his life is amazing.” I said in my head.
I was already imagining how my life would be in a few months. Everything was going to change. The phone, the clothes, the apartment… I was about to be a different person.
Gladys suggested that we go to another room for privacy. I knew what she meant and even though I was tipsy, I was hesitant. Martin poured a shot for me which I took then followed Gladys.
We had sex for hours. I kept wondering when she would be satisfied but she didn’t stop. I came out of that room dripping sweat.
Martin smiled at me as I went to the kitchen for a glass of water. When I went back to the room, she still wanted more. I ended up spending the night at Martin’s place.
I met Gladys regularly for a month but I didn’t get any money.
“Bro, when do these women start paying?” I asked, a bit frustrated.
“What do you mean?”
“I still haven’t gotten anything from Gladys.”
“How? Even a few thousand to get a haircut and buy new clothes?”
“Nothing.”
“Just give it time but you can ask her if you want.”
I was tired of waiting so the next time I met Gladys I asked her when she would give me money. She looked at me as if she was clueless of what I was talking about.
“I haven’t had lunch today.” I tried to ask indirectly.
“Do you want a beer?” She asked, still acting clueless.
Despite asking, she didn’t give me any money and she didn’t seem like she was ever going to give me. I ended things with her and stopped going to Martin’s place because I didn’t want to be involved with another sugar mummy.
