The phone rang, sending Norrie into a panic. “Oh shit!” She cursed.
“What’s wrong, babe?” Asked a concerned Nate.
“Oh, nothing. It’s just something I forgot to do. I’ll be right back,” she told him as she left the living room.
Norrie went into the washroom, thinking of the lie she was about to tell. She let the phone ring as she wiped off her makeup. She touched her eyes with a bit of soap and took off her wig and eyelashes. She then sat on the toilet seat and called back her caller.
“Hey, I’m sorry I missed your call. I haven’t been feeling too good,” she said in a meek voice.
“Oh baby, why didn’t you tell me?” Asked the man on the call.
“Baby, you’re out of the country, and I didn’t want to worry you,” Norrie told him.
“You look pale, and your eyes are bloodshot. Have you seen a doctor?” He asked.
“Not yet. I wasn’t sure how much I would be charged,” said Norrie, almost in tears.
“You shouldn’t have to worry about such things while dating me. Anyway, can it wait till morning?” He asked her.
“I think so,” said Norrie.
“Okay, I’ll be back by morning. I will pick you up, and then we’ll go to the hospital,” he told her.
Okay,” she said, trying not to look alarmed.
“I love you, baby. Get better,” he told her.
“I love you too,” said Norrie and ended the call.
“Hey, are you okay?” Nate said as he knocked on the door.
“Yeah, I am fine; I am just freshening up,” replied Norrie.
“Okay, I will warm up the food,” Nate told her.
Norrie sat on the toilet seat, tapping on her phone. She was wondering what to do. She hadn’t anticipated Vince, her other boyfriend, would return soon. She had intended to spend the weekend with Nate.
The sound of the microwave alerted her that she had been in there too long. Nate would begin to suspect something was wrong. She joined him to eat and execute her plan.
“Babe, it’s Friday night, and I feel like going out,” she told Nate.
“I thought you specifically asked for a night in the house?” Nate asked her.
“Yes, but I have changed my mind. Please, let’s go out,” Norrie begged Nate.
Nate had a soft spot for Norrie. He could hardly turn down her requests. It was almost midnight, but they dressed up to go clubbing. As soon as they arrived at the club, Norrie started taking shots. She also invited her friend to join them.
Nate tried asking her to slow down on the shots, but Norrie did not. She was on a mission. After a while, she asked her friend to join her in the washroom. Her friend Maggie agreed.
“Let me tell you I am in trouble,” said Norrie.
“Why?” Maggie asked her.
“Vince is coming back tomorrow morning and wants to see me and take me to a doctor. I lied that I was unwell. I didn’t know he was coming back that soon,” Norrie told Maggie.
“Tell him you’re feeling better,” Maggie told Norrie.
“I will, but he might get suspicious. I can’t be on bad terms with him right now. He was supposed to bring me a phone and give me upkeep. I also don’t want to annoy Nate because I really love him, but he doesn’t have as much money as Vince,” Norrie explained to Maggie.
“So, how do you intend to get away with this?” Maggie asked her.
“That’s where you come in. I’ll start a stupid fight with Nate and tell him I am leaving with you. I’ll go home and text Vince to say that I am feeling better. He could still show up, but at least I will be in my house,” Norrie narrated her elaborate plan.
The night went as planned. She pretended to be too drunk and started a fight with Nate, which led to her leaving without him. She set an alarm for 6:30 in the morning to text Vince that she didn’t need to go to the hospital. She fell asleep after that. A knock at her door woke her up at 9 a.m. It was Vince.
“Hey baby, I came here straight from the airport. I got your message, but I still needed to see how you’re doing. How are you feeling?” Vince asked Norrie. He’d also brought her flowers and a basket of fruits.
Norrie got into character and told him she was feeling better. Vince had barely settled in when someone knocked at the door. Norrie went to the door. She almost passed out when she saw Nate standing there. The look on her face told Nate something was wrong.
“Baby, who’s at the door? Why is it taking so long to open?” Vince asked.
Norrie quickly got outside and closed the door behind her.
“Hey, Nate. What are you doing here?” Norrie asked, pulling him away from the door.
“I came to apologize about last night. Who is in the house, Norrie?” Nate asked.
“This is not a good time, Nate. I’ll explain later,” she said as she tried to get him to leave.
“Baby, are you okay?” Vince asked. He’d come out to check what was taking her that long.
Nate looked at Vince and immediately knew what was going on.
“This is why you started a fight with me yesterday? Oh wow! Norrie, I didn’t expect this from you. Are you one of those girls, too? Good luck with your fossil!” Nate told her and left.
She almost ran after him, but Vince was also fuming.
“So this is what you do when I’m not around? Were you even sick?” Vince asked her.
“Vince, I can explain. Nate has the wrong idea about us,” Norrie said.
“Little girl, I’ve played this game longer than you have,” said Vince, and he left.
Norrie called Maggie to tell her of the disaster. She tried begging for forgiveness, but no one forgave her.
