I’m not one to accuse the man I’m dating of cheating until I have solid proof that he is. I, especially, didn’t want to believe Paul could be cheating on me. He might not have been the perfect boyfriend but we got along well. Additionally, I really struggle to make connections with people so I tend to cling to one person when I make a connection. I would rather stay in a dead relationship than start the dating process again.
Maybe that was the reason I let Paul get away with many things until he had the audacity to cheat on me right in front of my face. Things started going downhill when I introduced him to my friends. I usually introduce all the guys I’ve dated to them since they’re better judges of character and I trusted them.
They all seemed to like him and they thought that we were a good match.
“He’s so cute. Where did you meet him?” One of my friends commented.
“At work. What do you think of him?”
“He’s really nice. He told me he liked my hair.” Linda said.
There was a long, awkward silence and a few eye rolls before one of my friends changed the subject.
“I can tell this will last.” She said.
I felt more optimistic about the relationships after my friends encouraged me and sure enough, things were going great for the first few months. During this period, Linda had suspiciously become a regular visitor at my place. We were friends but we weren’t that close so I found it odd that she was visiting me so often. In fact, it was the first time that she had come to my place.
However, I didn’t think much of it since she used to come with her boyfriend and we would have sleepovers. The more time we spent together, the closer we became and eventually, Linda and I became inseparable. Out of all my friends, she was the last person I expected to be that close with but I was happily surprised.
I supported her when she broke up with her boyfriend and let her stay at my place so she wouldn’t be alone. However, she overstayed her welcome and I had to kick her out after I realized that she wasn’t planning on going back to her place any time soon. As I mentioned, I like my space and she was becoming an inconvenience. I had also noticed that she was getting a bit too close to Paul which made me uncomfortable.
Things got bad between me and Paul as soon as Linda left. He didn’t say or do anything but it was clear that something was off in my relationship. For months, things just weren’t working out and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. It was like I woke up and Paul was a different person. He didn’t look at me the way he used to and he would rather spend the evening scrolling on social media than talk to me.
The relationship was getting strained as the days went by. I had my suspicions as to what or rather who was causing the strain but I didn’t act on it hoping that I was wrong.
“Are you cheating on me?” I finally asked Paul.
He nearly choked when he heard the question. We’re both non-confrontational people so it took him by surprise.
“What? Why would you even think of that? I’m always here with you.”
“I’m not with you during the day.”
“I go to work and come back home.”
I felt silly asking him if he was cheating on me but I felt worse knowing that he was lying to my face. Still, I chose to believe him. Nobody wants to find out that one of their close friends was sleeping with their boyfriend. Despite the obvious signs, I turned a blind eye for some time. I hoped that it would go away but they only got closer and more obvious with their affection.
Whenever we were all together as friends, they would always sit together and talk to each other the whole time. It seemed like they were the ones in a relationship. It became so obvious that my other friends started questioning me about it.
“What’s going on with Paul and Linda?” One of them asked.
“Nothing. Why?” I replied naively.
“They’ve become so close lately.”
“Yeah. What’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing. I’m just curious.”
When the questions persisted, I finally admitted that it bothered me and that I suspected Paul was cheating on me with Linda. However, I didn’t have any way to prove that he was cheating on me. He was very secretive and it was hard to get him to admit anything. So, I decided to go after Linda. I knew she would reveal everything since she was the type to brag about sleeping with other people’s boyfriends.
My friends helped me to organize a dinner party for all of us where we would confront her. It actually went better than I expected. We showed up all dressed up and sat at the table as if nothing was happening. Linda and Paul arrived together and sat next to each other. At that point, they weren’t even trying to hide their affair.
We kept looking at them as they laughed and flirted with each other. Eventually, one of my friends put her foot down and pulled Linda aside. We all followed her leaving Paul all alone.
“What’s going on between you and Paul?” She asked.
“Nothing. He’s like my brother. You know I love you, Amanda. I would never do anything like that to you.” She answered.
“I know something is going on between you. It’s okay. You can tell me.” I said.
She was silent for a while.
“Okay. We’re having an affair. I didn’t mean…”
I didn’t hear anything after she admitted that Paul was cheating on me with her. My face turned red and I headed back to our table to ask Paul about it. However, he wasn’t at the table. The girls came back and after waiting for a few minutes, we realized that both Paul and Linda had left.
When I went home, I found him waiting for me. He tried to apologize and convince me that he had made a mistake. I wanted to believe him but I kept having flashbacks of every time he had lied to my face and I just couldn’t forgive him. We broke up and I also ended my friendship with Linda.
