I used to be a hopeless romantic when I was young. I thought that I’d meet someone while I was shopping in the supermarket who’d sweep me off my feet and we’d live happily ever after. That didn’t happen and as the years went by, I started losing hope in finding my Prince Charming. Additionally, the man that I loved cheated on me which only made me feel like real love didn’t exist. As I was nursing my broken heart, I met David who restored my faith in love.

From the moment we met, he was intentional with everything he did and said. He didn’t start with small talk. Instead, he cut straight to the chase.

“What are you reading?” He asked.

I was irritated since he was distracting me.

“A magazine,” I answered.

“That looks good.” He said pointing to a picture in the magazine.

“Yeah.”

“Is this for work or fun?”

“Work.”

I kept giving him one-word answers but he wouldn’t go away. He sat next to me and made himself comfortable.

“I’m David, by the way. I saw you seated here all alone and I thought I should talk to you.”

“Okay.”

“What’s your name?”

“Hilda.”

“Nice to meet you. I can see you’re busy and I don’t want to bother you anymore. Can I call you later today?”

I looked at him for the first time since he started talking to me and noticed how good-looking he was. My frown turned to a smile as I gave him my number.

“Thank you. I’ll call you. Make sure you pick it up.” He said while walking away.

I went on with my day but I kept thinking about David. Even though I didn’t want to get into another relationship after getting cheated on, he had reignited my hope for finding my Prince Charming.

He called me later that day as promised and we ended up talking for more than an hour. We planned to meet the following day before saying goodbye.

The following day, he showed up with a huge bouquet. They were the ugliest flower arrangement I had ever seen but I was smiling from ear to ear. I carried it around as we walked through the mall and when I got home, I put them in a vase.

Every time we met, he showed up with something. It could be a box of chocolates, a book, or even jewellery. He bought me a pocket watch because he was a fan of Jidenna and he liked his aesthetic. Most of the time, he bought me things that I didn’t ask for or want but I still loved the gesture.

After spending more time together, he learnt the things I liked and started getting them for me. My bed was filled with teddy ears because he bought me one almost every week. He found out that I loved red roses and only bought red roses. He even took me on a road trip to Nakuru so we could go to one of my favourite artist’s concerts.

We hadn’t even started dating at that point but after the concert, I knew that David was serious about me. We started dating shortly after that. He kept buying me things and letting me know that he cared about me.

I finally opened up to him about my past relationship experiences and how my ex cheated on me with someone I knew. It was embarrassing to relive those moments but David comforted me.

“I felt like I wasn’t good enough for him,” I said in tears.

“You’re good enough, babe. He was the one who wasn’t good enough if he could cheat on someone like you.”

I thought that David would never cheat on me. The way he treated me was unlike any other. Even in relationships where I wasn’t cheated on, they didn’t treat me the way David did. So, I could rest assured that he would be faithful to me.

I got so comfortable that I befriended the same girl that my ex cheated on me with. We used to be friends but fell out then she seduced my ex to get revenge on me. However, she had expressed how much she regretted what she had done and tried to make amends on numerous occasions. Since she was a close friend, I decided to forgive her.

A few months after we rekindled our friendship, I introduced her to David. She knew about him since I used to talk about him a lot but they hadn’t met.

David knew that she was the girl my ex cheated on me with and though he was friendly towards her, he kept his distance.

However, I was oblivious to what was happening in the background. Zoe, my friend, had messaged David telling him that she thought he was handsome. David didn’t tell me about the message. Instead, he asked her out on a date and that was when the affair started.

I didn’t understand how David could cheat on me. It’s not like Zoe was prettier than me. David was also not the cheating type yet, it happened again.

I found out that he cheated on me when I saw a message from her on his phone. David would say how he didn’t like her and couldn’t get along with her so I was surprised to see the message.

I pretended that I had lost my phone and asked him to unlock his phone so I could call mine. As I walked through the apartment, I went to the messages app and saw the conversation between him and Zoe. I read the last message that Zoe had just sent and she was telling him that she wanted to meet him the following weekend. Most of the messages were flirty.

I knew that David had cheated on me so I confronted him about it. He tried to deny it and make it seem like it was just harmless flirting but he came clean eventually.

I couldn’t believe that the man who had treated me like a queen also cheated on me. To make it worse, he knew about my experience and he still did it with the same girl. That was the day I realized that I either had bad luck in finding love or that all men were the same.

The relationship ended and I cut off David and Zoe completely from my life. At least I had been through the same situation before so I knew how to handle it but I still had a hard time moving on.
