For many years, most of us only knew the saying, ‘blood is thicker than water’ but didn’t know that the original expression was ‘blood of the covenant is thicker than water of the womb’. The battle between which statement holds more truth depends on the situation, and Brian and Geoff’s family had an intimate relationship with the struggle.
Brian and Geoff were siblings. Brian was slightly older than Geoff and took the older brother’s responsibility seriously. He defended his brother, protected him and loved him at all costs. Sometimes, it was at his own expense. Being an older brother meant he did all he could to make the life of his younger sibling easier. The needs of the family came before his for the longest time.
His dedication to family saw him take in Geoff when he struggled financially after graduating. Brian had better luck. He immediately got a well-paying job and soon after got married to a beautiful woman. They hadn’t gotten children yet because they had a plan to grow each other’s careers and wealth before committing to being parents. They also wanted to travel. They also lived in a beautiful mansion in an affluent neighbourhood, so when Brian discovered Geoff was struggling to find a good job, he didn’t hesitate to help.
Geoff moved into Brian’s house. Brian’s wife was also fond of Geoff, so it wasn’t a difficult decision. That fondness would become something more within months of living with the couple. It started with a hand brush as she served food or while both were in the kitchen. Then, it moved to stealing glances. When Brian travelled, his wife felt lonely, and Geoff had the solution.
“It’s one time thing,” Brian’s wife told Geoff.
“Yes, it can’t happen again,” said Geoff.
They told each other these words several times when it happened again until they changed to, “We’re in too deep now.” Weeks turned into months. They perfected the act and took advantage of their unsuspecting loved one. Brian loved them and would never anticipate such betrayal from his wife and blood brother. During his travels, he brainstormed how to help Geoff get into ventures that would give him a steady income. Eventually, he came up with an idea, and it worked. Geoff moved out.
His departure from the house began to reveal the affair. They began sneaking around since they were no longer in the same place. Brian’s wife had odd explanations about things, and it was only a matter of time before Brian discovered her infidelity. What he didn’t anticipate was that it was with his brother. The affair broke the family.
It was decided that the details of the affair would be kept within the family to avoid further shame. Brian cut Geoff off due to the betrayal, but he agreed to keep the details within the family. That began a new chapter in their family. Brian hardly showed up for family events unless Geoff wasn’t there or it was absolutely necessary. He also divorced his wife.
Three years after the incident, Brian fell in love again. That love saved him. Within three years, his family kept urging him to patch things up with his brother. Being the last born, Geoff had a particular sway with his mother. The mother heavily advocated for Geoff, which strained his relationship with his mother. Finding love again gave Brian hope to have a family; although it wouldn’t replace his other family, it was better than nothing.
The wedding arrangements began, and they had the first two traditional ceremonies. They could find excuses for Geoff’s absence, but it was becoming difficult to justify it to the extended family and friends. Brian and Geoff’s mother decided to put her foot down regarding the white wedding.
“Brian, it has been three years already. You need to forgive your brother and move on,” said their mother.
“Mother, I gave everything to your son. I would have gone hungry for him not to starve but that was how he repaid me,” Brian argued.
“Blood is thicker than water, my son. You should not let a woman cause such a huge rift between you. You have let that woman break our family and bring shame,” said the mother.
“Mother, this is not about her. It is about Geoff’s actions,” said Brian.
“He has tried to apologize. You need to allow him to attend the wedding. People are asking questions, Brian,” said the mother.
“And we don’t have to tell them anything. It has worked for the past three years. I am not letting Geoff near my wedding or new wife,” Brian growled.
They argued over the matter for weeks. At some point, the mother threatened not to attend the wedding, but the father intervened.
“Brian, I hope you never have to see your family torn apart,” the mother told him. Brian talked it over with his wife, but he couldn’t bring himself to allow Geoff back into his life.
