The night was still young. It was 9:00 PM and for someone who liked partying like Vic, it meant more hours of drinks and fun moments. As he drove out of his place to go pick up Taraji and Eva for a party at Fred’s place, he did not know the night he anticipated would be a fun night out would end up with him and his best friend getting arrested. Had he known, he would have changed his mind about the whole night’s plans.
After almost twenty minutes of driving, he arrived at their place. Eva and Taraji lived on the outskirts of town. He had asked them to take a cab, but they insisted on him picking them up. The two had promised that they’d be ready by the time he arrived. They also alerted Vic that they would love to have some harder stuff, specifically coke because that would make their night even more fun.
This is where Vic had called Fred and asked him if he could avail some of it at the party.
“Eva and Taraji want some cocaine.”
Fred did not know that the two ladies used coke. “Are you for real, my guy?”
“You don’t believe me?” Vic said and then he laughed, “You think I am looking out for myself.”
Fred laughed too. “You see! You’ve also thought what I was thinking.”
“For real, they’d want it. I want to see how they will behave when they gey high. It will make the night even more fun for us. Make it happen, man.”
“Why not?” Fred confirmed that indeed the coke would be there.
Vic knew that Fred had connections when it came to access to cocaine and pills. This is because every time they had a party and people requested drugs, Fred would call a guy who would bring them and then Fred would make them available to anyone who wanted to purchase them from him. One thing that never made sense was that Vic never got to see this dealer, even though he was Fred’s best friend.
Anyway, this was not important because they both came from well-to-do middle-class families so Vic did not want details that would just end up stressing him. As long as they had access, and they could pay there was no issue. So, if the girls wanted to get high he was happy to make it happen.
As they drove to Fred’s place, the three were talking excitedly about how they would have a good night of fun. When Fred and Vic had met Taraji and Eva at the club, they had sold them that they were in university. They looked young and naïve, so it was very believable that they were in university. They also lived in a hostel on campus, but Vic had never been inside. He went to pick them there or drop them there, but he had never entered their hostel.
This evening, as they were heading to Fred’s place, the girls talked about how university was hard, and they could not wait to unwind. They talked about how they had tried coke once before with one of their former boyfriends and it had been an interesting high. They wanted to try it again but couldn’t afford it. Vic on the other hand spoke of how he had a long week at work and also wanted the same thing, to let go of his worries.
As they talked, one would think that they had known each other for a long time. But the truth was that Vic had only met them two months before. They spent time together in the same crowd on the weekends at several drinking joints. Something that made them acquaintances and after some time, they became drinking buddies. Fred had been a part of these days too and when he decided to hold a party at his place on this day, he told Vic to bring them to the party at his house. Vic and Fred were hoping for something more with the girls because they were different from the girls they normally hang around.
“Make sure you come with Eva and Taraji to my party this weekend.” He told Vic as they talked about the party on Wednesday.
When he told Eva and Taraji about the invite, they were very elated.
Eva was very excited. “It’s been a while since we went to a party. We have been working really hard this semester and we are almost doing exams. This party will be a great time to unwind”,
“Then here is your chance to have fun. Just be ready,” Vic told her.
So, there they were on the way to Fred’s place, and from the look of things so far, the night would be a good one. At some point, there was silence in the car as the two ladies were on their phones. That wasn’t off at all, except they kept on showing each other things on their phones.
When they arrived, they realized that they were among the first ones to arrive. Fred lived in a posh neighbourhood. The inside of his house was well furnished to the standards of such a place. He had high-end electronics and appliances, and the house was beautifully furnished with leather coaches, and Kenyan artworks and sculptures. You could tell that a lot of money had been spent on Fred’s house.
Both Eva and Taraji dressed to impress and to entice. Eva was in a short leather skirt, a red crop top and high boots. Taraji was in booty shorts and sneakers. They were looking gorgeous. From the way they were hugging and holding both Fred and Vic, the boys were sure this night was going to be their lucky night.
The place was warm, and the girls had both removed their sweaters. They made themselves comfortable. They were having a few drinks as other people started coming too. After a few minutes, the place was full. Music played in the background as people had low-tone conversations. Others were laughing. Others were refilling their drinks and at some point, a few had started standing up to dance. The house was so spacious that there was enough space to dance without the space being overcrowded.
Eva had been on the phone a lot since they entered the house. Vic wondered whether there was something wrong because he had never seen Eva make frequent calls in their previous moments of fun. She would keep excusing herself to go make the call outside. When they thought that she’d now settle so that they could have fun conversations and a good time, a call would come through. He grew concerned and asked if everything was okay, to which Eva said her brother was unwell and in hospital so she had to keep checking up on him. This made Vic relax. He asked if there was anything that her brother needed, and Eva said he had medication she just needed to check that he was doing ok.
At some point, Taraji looked like she was a bit bored. She asked, “Are we getting the coke or what? I am bored.”
Vic asked Fred to bring it to the table. “Ama your guy did not turn up?”
Fred paused then responded to Vic. “Of course, he did. He brought it and I put it upstairs let me go fetch it. Let me finish this drink first.”
At around 10:30 pm Fred went upstairs to bring it.
As he made his way up, Eva and Taraji looked more alert. They sat upright, with their eyes scanning the room. Now they were not on their phones nor were they focusing on their drinks. Their attention seemed to be focused on something or someone in the crowd, but Vic Vic could not tell what it was. Vic tried to look around to see what was up, but he did not see anything.
“Are you guys, okay?” He asked the girls.
“Yes. Yes. We are fine.” Taraji responded and then said, “I need to go to the washroom. Where is it?”
Vic showed Taraji the way to the washroom, which wasn’t far. One just went straight to a corridor at the corner of the living room, to the furthest end. She had gone and immediately Vic and Eva had gone back to talking.
Taraji went upstairs. she had not wanted to go to the washrooms at all. She had her own plans. There was no one upstairs. It was deserted. The whole corridor was empty, one would think that the party wasn’t happening in this same home. The music and the people’s voices as they talked downstairs were loud but not too loud. She walked as silently as she could so as not to alert anyone that she was there.
There were several rooms upstairs. She wasn’t sure which one was Fred’s bedroom. She went to each one peeking in and listening to hear if there was anyone. At one of the doors, the door was slightly open. She peeked inside the door. She could see stacks of white powder sachets on the table. There was also a small plastic bag with a white power on the other end of the table. There were also some unused ziplock sachets and a weighing scale. It seemed someone was filling in the sachets.
She marked the room and then walked back to the stairs like she had just come up. She called out to Fred. “Fred? Fred? Where are your washrooms? I am pressed.”
Fred appeared from the room with the sachets. Eva had not seen him. The slightly open door did not show the entire room. He must have been on the other end of the room.
“Vic did not show you?” He asked, baffled. “There’s one downstairs.”
Taraji was jumpy, like someone who was extremely pressed and was trying to hold it. “He showed me, but the line for the toilet downstairs is long and I can’t hold it anymore.”
“Okay, okay. It’s right here.” He walked her to the furthest end of the corridor and showed her the washrooms. She went in and in two minutes she was out. As she came out, Fred was waiting for her and walked her back downstairs to the table. As they were passing through the room with coke, Taraji realized that the door was closed.
Fred removed a couple of sachets from his jacket pocket. Taraji and Eva were not the only ones who had requested coke. He gave them a few and was headed to where others had sat to hand them out.
Vic had already opened one sachet and he was about to put it on a clean tray when they heard “Everyone put your hands up where we can see them.”
In seconds, cops in plain clothes with guns appeared and surrounded the partygoers. Undercover cops had been in the room without their knowledge. Eva and Taraji stood up and showed their badges to the crow. Taraji ordered Fred to take them upstairs. Vic was in shock that their friends were cops.
Fred’s guests wanted to protest but the cops had taken charge. To Eva and Taraji, that had not been a party but a serious operation. As they went upstairs to pick the coke from Fred’s room as exhibits, Fred was furious and lashed out at Vic.
“Bro, I can’t believe you did this to me.”
Vic, who was still in shock could not hide his confusion. “Bro, I swear, I did not know they were cops.”
The cops took everything that was in the room. There was coke and money as well. Everyone at the party was being arrested. They would find out at the jail cell who was innocent and who wasn’t. But everyone was in shock about what had just happened.
Then people in the police vans started discussing why Fred had all those drugs and money in his house and it all made sense. Fred had been using the parties at his house as a way to sell drugs while his friends were having a good time. There was no outside dealer whom Fred would send for the drugs. Fred had been pretending to get drugs from a dealer, but he was the dealer. Now all his friends were in trouble. They wished they had thought about the red flags like why he always seemed to have expensive watches and he had extravagant parties and holidays yet he wasn’t even yet a supervisor at his job. They had thought the money came from his family but it turned out he found another way to make money. Fred who they thought was their friend and who always encouraged them to try different types of drugs for that ultimate high had been getting them addicted to drugs so that he could make money off them. The mood among the friends became sombre and everyone was left with their thoughts and regrets.
