I met my boss in a club. Yes, a club. I know it’s not a traditional or even conducive environment to be talking about a job but I was desperate. My business had slowed down and the bills were stacking up so to me, James was an angel in disguise at that moment. I was also in no position to turn down a job opportunity since I needed a steady income and no one was giving me a chance.
I wasn’t even supposed to be clubbing. However, I was feeling low and my friend took me out to get my mind off everything. Barely an hour after we arrived, James walked in with an entourage of sharply dressed people and the club came alive. They sat at a reserved area and immediately the drinks started flowing. It was hard not to admire them. I kept looking at them and wondering how they could afford all those drinks.
“Stop staring at them.” My friend alerted me.
“I can’t help myself. I wish I had that kind of money.”
She laughed.
“We have our own drinks.”
“Of course we do. Thank you by the way.”
“It’s okay.”
I finally stopped looking at them and focused on having a fun night with my friend. As I was minding my business, James came over to our table. He greeted my friend first and talked to her for a minute before coming to my side.
“Hi.” He said then reached for a handshake.
“Hi.”
“Can I buy you a drink?” He asked.
“Okay.” I didn’t even think twice about it.
He called the waiter who took our orders and then left.
“You’re really pretty.”
“Thanks. So, are you celebrating something?” I asked.
“No.” He answered and laughed. “That’s my staff. We usually go out at the end of every month.”
“Your staff? You have a business?”
“A company, actually. I have a medium-sized asset management company.”
I didn’t even know what that was but it didn’t stop me from asking for a job.
“That’s nice. Are you hiring?”
He laughed again.
“You’re very funny.”
“I’m not joking.”
“This is the first time someone has asked me for a job in a club. I’ll think about it but it was nice meeting you. I need to go back to my people but here’s my number. Call me tomorrow and we can talk about the job.” He said then left.
I woke up at the crack of dawn with a hangover to learn what asset management was so I could make a good impression on James. At around 9 a.m., I gave him a call and we got straight to the point.
“So, you want a job?” He asked. He seemed more stern than he did at the club which made me nervous but I composed myself.
“Yes.”
“What value will you add to my company?”
I listed all my qualifications and even added the little that I could remember about asset management which seemed to impress him.
“I knew you were special from the moment I saw you. Come by the office when you have time and we’ll discuss your position.”
“Really? You have no idea what this means to me. Thank you very much.”
“You’re welcome.” He answered then hung up.
I ran around the house screaming like a mad woman and it took me a few minutes for me to calm down. I then called my friend to tell her the good news.
“Can you believe the guy we met at the club will be my boss?”
“The guy we met last night?”
“Yes.”
“Really? That’s amazing, dear. I’m so happy for you.”
“He asked me to go and see him in his office. I want to shower then head out.”
“Okay. I hope he’s not the kind of boss that makes you sleep with him for the job.”
I hadn’t thought about it but James didn’t seem like that type. If he was, he would have asked me to go home with him the night we met.
When I got to the company, the receptionist welcomed me and took me to James’ office. We talked briefly and he informed me that I would be working as his Personal Assistant.
“I need someone to manage my daily activities and I noticed that you’re very organized so you got the job.”
“Thank you. I promise I won’t disappoint you.”
He didn’t give me an employment contract to sign but I didn’t think it was a big deal since I didn’t get the job the traditional way.
I started the job that same day. There was more work than I expected but I was grateful to even have a job. I quickly got the hang of things and began enjoying working for James. He was a good boss but he would constantly ask me out on dates. I assumed it was part of their office culture since it was a small company but I came to learn that James had other agendas.
After long work hours, the end of the month finally came and I could finally enjoy the fruits of my hard work. I waited to receive that sweet notification from my bank but nothing came. I kept checking my balance to see if my salary had come in but it hadn’t. A week went by before I asked James about it.
“James, I haven’t received my salary yet.”
“Oh, yes. I will pay you. What are you doing tonight?”
“Nothing. Why? Do you want me to do something at work?”
“No, I want you to join me for dinner.”
It wasn’t unusual for him to ask me out so I agreed. I stayed with him at the office till around 7 pm when we left for dinner. While we were in the elevator, he moved closer to me and held my waist which felt strange since he was my boss.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Do you want your salary?” He asked
I didn’t respond since I knew exactly what he meant. Even though I thought James was attractive, I didn’t want to sleep with my boss, especially for my salary that I had worked so much for. However, I felt like I had no other choice.
After dinner, we went to his place and I slept with him. The following day, I got my salary.
It became the norm every month. I had to beg for my salary and the only way I got paid was when I slept with James. It was so humiliating and one of the worst experiences I ever had that I quit after just four months and went back to doing my own business. It was still struggling but I couldn’t imagine going back to employment.
After I left, James didn’t bother to contact me or apologize for his behaviour. I have never heard from him since then. My business is good now so I don’t have to worry about going back to employment.
