How To Deal With Sexual Harassment In The Workplace

The Singlehood Series: My Boss Fired Me Because I Rejected His Advances

It was a common thing for him to flirt with all the women in the office.

When I joined the company I worked at, I was explicitly warned about a specific boss. The guy was notorious for flirting with the women in the office and they let me know that he would probably try it with me. Most girls gave in to his advances but I promised myself that I wouldn’t be one of them. I wanted to build a respectable career and it meant standing my ground when it came to office shenanigans.

I managed to avoid him for a while since I never used to go to any after-office hangouts. However, he still insisted on talking to me every day at work.

“Beautiful girl.” He would shout from the door drawing the attention of the whole office.

I don’t even think he knew my name.

“How are you, sir,” I said after noticing his lustful stare.

“I’m very fine, my dear. Are you going to give me a hug?” He asked.

“I’m very busy. Maybe later.”

“Okay. I will come for you during lunch.”

I used to leave my desk 5 minutes before lunchtime and go to the communal break room just so he wouldn’t ask me out for lunch. However, he got wind of what I was doing and one day, he showed up at around 12.30. Everyone burst out in laughter when they saw him since they knew there was no way I could escape.

He took me to a nice restaurant and treated me to a delicious lunch. Honestly, I started warming up to him after that day. He wasn’t the creep that everyone had made me believe but it still didn’t change the fact that he preyed on every girl who joined the company. He didn’t try to hit on me, maybe because I had rejected his advances many times.

Instead, we had a normal discussion between a boss and an employee.

“Do you like working for the company?” He asked.

“I do.”

“You know, you should be friendlier with me. The girl who was there before you was a very good friend of mine.”

“I’m friendly. I just prefer my own space.” I said.

“That’s good. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask me.”

I thought it was weird that he was offering to help me even though he wasn’t my immediate boss. Again, I don’t even think he knew what I did for the company.

“Yes, sir. Thank you.” I answered.

We finished our lunch and walked back to the office as we made small talk. I could see him looking at my ass from the corner of my eye but there wasn’t much I could do. When I got to the office, everyone was eagerly waiting for the update on what had happened during lunch.

“We just talked about work. I enjoyed it.” I answered.

“Maybe he’s changing.” One girl joked.

He started coming for me every day at 12.30 to take me to lunch and there was nothing much my boss could do to stop him since he was in a higher position. I wasn’t complaining, though. I was getting a longer lunch break and free lunch. However, I was still aware that he was only doing it to butter me up and make me accept his advances.

Our interactions remained in the office strictly even though he tried to ask me out severally. Just like before, he found another way to get me to go out with him. As I walked out of the office building, he emerged from the parking lot with his Range Rover and stopped in front of me.

“Let me give you a lift.” He offered.

There was no way I could refuse so I got in and he drove towards Mombasa Road.

“I don’t live on these sides,” I said as I looked around in confusion.

“It’s okay. I’ll take you home. I just want to grab a quick dinner.” He said.

We went to Ole Sereni and he asked me to look for a table as he parked. I wanted to leave but I didn’t want to cause a scene. So, I walked in carrying my laptop bag as people walked in beautiful dinner dresses. I got a table and the boss joined me shortly after.

“So, beautiful girl, why have you been avoiding me?” He asked.

“I haven’t,” I answered almost timidly.

“You have. You always turn me down.”

“I have lunch with you every day.”

“I want to have dinner then have you.” He said quite aggressively.

This was the first time he openly said it even though I knew exactly what he wanted.

“That’s not possible.”

“Why?”

“I have a boyfriend.”

“So you have a boyfriend? You’re not as innocent as you pretend to be. I even thought you were a virgin.” He joked but I was already on high alert so I didn’t find anything fine.

“It’s okay. Just have your dinner and I will allow you to go.”

“I would like to go now.”

“Relax, my dear. I’m not a bad person.”

I insisted that I wanted to leave so he sent me cab money and I sprinted out of the hotel. I knew that I had pissed him off but at least I was home safe.

The following day, I went to the office expecting the worst. I thought I would be fired the minute I walked in but I went in and started working just as usual. The boss even stopped coming to my desk. After a few days, he showed up but he was accompanied by another girl.

“Pack your things and leave.” He said as they both stood over me.

I tried to ask my boss what was going on but he simply shrugged his shoulders. They came back again and this time the boss was angrier than ever. I realized that it wasn’t a joke and started packing my things as he instructed. As soon as I cleared the desk, the other girl sat down and started inspecting the space.

“I like it.” She said in an annoying, high-pitched voice.

“Good.” The boss then turned to me. “You can leave now.”

Even though I knew this would happen sooner or later, I was in shock as I walked to the lifts. My friends came to bid me goodbye but it didn’t sink in that I had been fired until I got home. I got another job barely two weeks later and I still maintain that I will never sleep with a boss just to keep my job.
