I’m not a stranger to period accidents in public. Growing up, I used to get an accident almost every time I had my period. I have a heavy flow and at that age, I didn’t know how to make sure that I didn’t get an accident. It was so traumatizing since all the kids in my class used to make fun of me. However, as I got older, the accidents became a thing of the past. I had finally mastered my period and I vowed to never have another accident in public.

I did a good job of keeping that promise to myself. Pads and tampons were a staple in my handbag and I checked my period app religiously to make sure I wasn’t caught off guard. However, due to a series of unfortunate events, I had another accident.

I had just started a new job and at that time, it felt like a dream. I had been unemployed for so long that I almost gave up hope. When I got the job, I decided to put all my focus on it. I worked till 7 pm and I was usually one of the first people to arrive. Since I left and arrived so early, I got to socialize with one of the managers in the company. He was around my age and we had a lot of things in common so we became good friends quickly.

“We should get coffee one of these days.” He said.

“I’d love that,” I answered without hesitation.

To be honest, I had a little crush on him and hoped that the feeling was mutual. When he asked me out, I knew I wasn’t the only one.

We planned the coffee date for the coming Friday and I started preparing myself. I wanted everything to go right since I was going out with a workmate and I wanted to make a good impression. I couldn’t stop thinking about the date. Everything reminded me of it. I even started having dreams about it.

“Why am I so nervous about this date?” I asked one of my friends.

“Maybe you really like the guy.”

“I do but this isn’t normal. I had a dream about it last night.”

“You’ll be fine. I think it’s the excitement of starting the job and also getting someone you like.”

“Maybe I shouldn’t have agreed to go on the date so soon.”

“We’ll, you can’t cancel now. It will make things worse.”

I couldn’t understand why I was nervous but I got more nervous as the days went by. When the day came, I was so nervous that I was disoriented. To make matters worse, the day started on such a bad note that I thought it was a sign of what was to come. I didn’t have electricity which derailed my morning.

When I finally got on the road, there was so much traffic and for the first time, I got to work late. When I got to work, I realized that I didn’t pack a lot of essentials including my tampon and pad. However, I had nothing to worry about since I wasn’t expecting my period until the following week.

Just when I thought that the day couldn’t get worse, I started getting cramps later in the day but I thought that it was a stomach ache. I had a period tracker and it had been accurate for years so I was sure that it wasn’t my period. However, I kept going to the washroom to check if I got my period. Nothing had happened but the cramps persisted throughout the day.

At the end of the day, Henry came to my desk so we could head to the restaurant. I went to the washroom to get one last to see whether I had started my period but there was nothing.

I was a bit calmer knowing that I hadn’t started my period and when we got to the restaurant, all my worries went away.

“So do you like working at the company?” Henry asked.

“I do. I’ve learnt so much so far.”

“I’m happy to hear that. It’s also a joy having you around.”

We talked for so long that I forgot I had cramps. After a few hours, it hit me that my cramps were worse than before. It was obvious that something was wrong but I was too scared to go to the washroom and check. So, I kept sitting hoping that it would magically disappear.

I could feel a wetness but I hoped it wasn’t my period. We talked for another hour before Henry asked if I was ready to leave.

“Yes, just give me a minute. I need to use the washroom.”

I got up when Henry was distracted by the waiter and dashed to the washroom. When I saw the blood stain, my heart dropped. It was so big that there was nothing I could do to hide it. Additionally, I was wearing a light blue dress and the red stain was so conspicuous. I didn’t know if Henry saw the huge stain on my dress when I got up to go to the washroom but I hoped he didn’t.

I stayed in the bathroom for more than 10 minutes trying to figure out what to do. Luckily, another diner came in and I borrowed a pad from her. I also had a blazer which I tied around my waist but it was obvious what had happened.

Henry took one look at me and connected the dots. He didn’t ask about it but the drive back to my place was very awkward. I tried to spark a conversation and he wasn’t interested.

I couldn’t stop thinking about the events of that day. It was like a nightmare. The last thing I expected was to start my period. However, I must have been so stressed out about the date that the stress induced my period.

Things were never the same after that date. Henry had never looked at me the same way he used to. He stopped asking me out and only talked to me occasionally.
