Vegetarians can be a handful since they have to eat a very specific diet. However, there’s nothing worse than a self-righteous vegetarian. You know the ones who lecture people about how bad it is to eat meat. I don’t have an issue with anyone who chooses to be vegetarian but I don’t respond well to people who make meat eaters feel like murderers. I’m a 45-year-old man and I already know what I like and what I don’t like. Besides, meat is a huge part of my diet and it will be hard to change that.
The last thing I expected was to go on a date with that kind of vegetarian. I knew that Michelle was a vegetarian since it was in her dating profile. However, I never asked much about it. I just assumed that she didn’t eat meat because of medical reasons.
“It’s so nice to match with you.” I messaged her.
“It’s nice matching with you too.” She replied.
“You’re so beautiful. Why are you still single?”
“I just haven’t found my Mr Right. Maybe it could be you.”
“I hope so.”
We didn’t meet immediately. In fact, it took about two months for us to go on our first date. I’m a busy man and our schedules always seemed to clash. However, I enjoyed talking to Michelle over the phone. I got to know more about her.
“I’m looking for a serious relationship.” She said.
“Me too. I’m tired of being single.”
“By the way, I’m a vegetarian.” She mentioned.
“I know. I saw on your profile.”
“Do you have a problem with it?”
“Not at all.”
That was the first time we talked about her being a vegetarian and it was brief. She simply wanted to know if it was a dealbreaker for me which it wasn’t.
“Some of my previous dates had an issue with me being a vegetarian.” She explained.
I don’t have an issue but I eat meat. Is that a problem with you?”
“No, you can eat meat.” She answered.
We didn’t talk about it again until we met in person. Meanwhile, I was busy trying to plan the perfect date and be the perfect date. It had been a while since I went on a date so I had to refresh my knowledge of date conversations and things I should and shouldn’t do on a date. I even googled restaurants that had lots of vegetarian options. I really wanted to make a good impression on Michelle.
My colleague noticed that I was stressed out which was unlike me.
“What’s going on?” He asked.
“I’m going on a date this weekend.”
“That’s amazing, bro.” He answered excitedly.
“It is but I’m a bit worried. This is my first date in three years.”
“Don’t overthink it. You’ll end up spoiling everything if you do.” He advised me.
I relaxed a bit after talking to my colleague. Still, I wanted to have a memorable date so I made sure that I brought out the best version of myself.
Finally, the weekend arrived and I prepared to meet my lovely date. She was equally excited about the date which made me look forward to meeting her. So far, everything was aligned. We had gotten along well through the phone so I didn’t think that anything could go wrong.
I got to the restaurant first and ordered a glass of whiskey as I waited for Michelle to arrive. A few minutes later, she walked in. I couldn’t be happier to see her in person. She looked exactly like her photos. We exchanged a few pleasantries before the waiter came to take our order.
As a proper gentleman, I recommended a dish she would like which she agreed and I ordered for her. I then ordered for myself and gave the menu to the waiter. When I glanced at Michelle, I noticed she looked angry. I didn’t understand why at first but she was quick to tell me what I did wrong.
“Did you order meat?” She asked.
“Yes, that’s for me. I ordered a vegetarian meal for you.”
“Why would you eat meat when you know I don’t eat meat?”
“You said you didn’t have a problem if I ate meat.”
“I don’t have a problem if you eat meat somewhere else, not when you’re with me.”
To be honest, I wanted to order a vegetarian meal as well but I was so hungry and felt like I needed something meaty. I also didn’t think that Michelle would be that angry that I was eating meat. I thought of changing my order since it made her uncomfortable. However, the way she reacted only angered me and I decided to stick with my order.
The waiter brought our meals and my plate was full of a variety of meat from skewers to chicken wings. My mouth was watering as I looked at the arrangement. Michelle, on the other hand, looked disgusted.
She asked, “Do you know animals were murdered so you could have this meal?”
“That is why I will enjoy my meal.”
“You’re heartless. I can’t eat anything now. I feel nauseous.”
“That’s too bad. I’m very hungry and I will eat whether you like it or not.” I said and dig into a piece of chicken wing.
“Couldn’t you have ordered a vegetarian meal?”
“Do I look like I eat rabbit food?”
“I thought you were different.”
It was obvious that Michelle had no intention of seeing me again so I decided to make the most of the date. She didn’t touch her food the whole time but she stayed until I finished mine. Every time she made a comment about eating meat, I had an answer for her. Eventually, we agreed that we weren’t compatible and went our separate ways.
I never heard from Michelle after that disastrous date. However, I was happy with the way things turned out. She seemed like she wanted to date a vegetarian which I can never be unless my doctor recommended it.
