Makeup products, especially quality ones, can be really expensive. It doesn’t make sense to move on to a new product when there are still some left in the nooks and crannies of the containers. Some bottles aren’t intuitively designed so your makeup brush or finger can’t reach those corners.
Here are some tips to get every last drop of makeup.
1. Store the bottle upside down
Instead of banging the bottle against your hand, storing it upside down lets the product run to the lid for easier use when you open it. When the makeup bottle is down to its last remnants, start storing it upside down to shorten your prep time when getting ready.
2. Add water
If you have a foundation that comes in pump form, adding a few drops of water can help loosen up the product stuck in the bottom. Remove the cap and add a few drops of warm water then shake the bottle. Store the container upside down for at least a day before using it again. Use an earbud to access more products.
If you have multiple used bottles of foundation that you can’t access, try adding boiled water to the containers. Shake the bottles until a solid mixture forms. Pour out the solution into another clean empty container. Wait for the foundation to form a sediment then pour out the water. You can also use a napkin or sponge to soak out the water. Ensure that the container is sanitized to avoid any contamination.
3. Cut the tube in half
Foundation also comes in a tube. When this happens, try to squeeze all the last remaining product into the lid. When you’ve squeezed it until it can’t be done any further, roll it open and cut it in half. Use an earbud or a finger to scoop out the remaining product. Store it in a cool, dry, airtight container until you’ve exhausted the makeup.
4. Submerge the container
Ensure the makeup case is waterproof by wrapping tape around any openings if the product is a powder. Submerge it in warm water for a few minutes until all the caked-up powder is loosened up. Avoid putting it in boiling water to reduce the risk of injury. You can also use this for mascara as long as it’s not older than three months.

5. Add lotion
When you add your moisturising lotion to the last remnants of your foundation, you can turn it into a tinted moisturiser. Add a few drops then shake the container. If your makeup comes in a tube, you can use a syringe to squeeze some lotion into it to get more out of it.
6. Use packaging tape
After a while of use, your makeup can harden. Don’t toss it away. This is because the oils from your skin on your makeup brush or sponge can harden the top layer. Use the packaging tape to remove the hardened film. When it’s softened, you can use it as though brand new.
7. Use rubbing alcohol
If your eyeshadow palette has changed hues and the powder looks caked, put some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. This disinfects the powder and restores the original colours. This will save you a few more uses.
Pressed makeup that comes off in blocks can be restored by using rubbing alcohol. Pour enough to create a paste. After it’s saturated, press it down with a solid object such as a spoon or your finger. When the alcohol evaporates, the product will become powdery enough for use.
8. Saline solution
Mascara, eyeliner, and other cream-based products can dry after a few weeks of use. You’re only to use mascara and gel liner for three months. Cream eyeshadow, foundation, and other forms of makeup can last up to a year. If they dry out or get clumpy before their toss-out date, pour a few drops of saline solution to refresh them. The solution will restore moisture without compromising your makeup.
To make a homemade saline solution, take four cups of distilled water (boiled water that has eliminated all impurities and pathogens) and add two teaspoons of non-iodized salt. Mix in a clean container until completely dissolved. Wait until it cools to use.
9. Save fake eyelashes
To keep fake eyelashes for another use, don’t strip them off your eye. Run a spoolie brush soaked in rubbing alcohol along the glue line of the eyelash extensions. This removes the glue without ruining the shape of the lashes.
10. Remove the rubber neck
When lip gloss runs low, it can be almost impossible to get it all out. Some gloss bottles have a rubber squeegee around the neck that wipes off excess lip gloss when you’re pulling out the wand. Remove this bit with your fingernail to get extra lip gloss before throwing out the tube.
11. Don’t throw out broken lipstick
If the tube of lipstick has broken, don’t toss it out. Hold the pieces together over a candle flame and let them melt enough to stick. When it’s not yet dried, smoothen the edges and it will appear good as new.
12. Use eye shadow as lipstick
The eye shadow powder left may not be enough for your eyes. However, you can use it as a lip stain. Scrape out the powder with a toothpick into a small container and mix it with petroleum jelly. Start with a small dollop and mix until it’s saturated. Store in a small container for future use. You can use a small petroleum jelly container or a small lip balm bottle.
13. Create a nail polish
You can also use leftover eyeshadow to create a new nail polish. Pour some of the pigment into a bottle of clear nail lacquer, top coat, or base coat. Shake the bottle until the colour is evenly spread. Depending on how much eyeshadow pigment you have, you can create a light colour polish or a deeper colour.

14. Store makeup safely
To extend the shelf life of your makeup, store them in the fridge or a cool dry place. Heat and light alter the hue, scent and texture of nail polish, perfumes, and lipsticks. 15. Mix lotion with perfume.
If you have small vials of perfume, you can add unscented lotion to the bottles to create a scented lotion.
Whenever using up the last of your makeup products, ensure that they are all safe to use. Always make sure they’re within the use-by date to avoid any contamination.
